Looking into the Sun with a solar filter

I designed and 3D printed this solar filter adapter for my 80mm binoculars so I can look into the sun. Sadly, the magnification is not that great and it looks like an orange, but we can see a few dark spots.
I used the Kingroon KP3S Pro and PETG filament for the printed part.

I got the Celestron SkyMaster Pro 20x80 hoping to use them for stargazing. Turns out more difficult than I thought beyond watching the Sun and Moon.

the orion nebula and the andromeda galaxy are good first targets

you must hold very still and take a bunch of pictures. then you must "stack" the pictures in an appropriate photo editing program for astrophotography and you can mess with the levels of the data to really get those stars to show up

What kind of Mount do you use? When you start getting into the higher focal lengths you really need a motorized tracking mount in order to keep your targets on frame. For visual observing I suggest an alt/az Mount like the Skywatcher AZ GTi

I hear you on that. Until getting a solid tripod mount (which was more expensive than I wanted, but less expensive than the binoculars), I too had a miserable stargazing experience with my SkyMaster binoculars. The tripod mount, though, made all the difference in the world. Before that, holding the binoculars at the big end, and letting the eyepieces press into my face more than I might have liked, did at least help a little.

Before deep-sky stargazing, you can start with something more simple like trying to see the moon's craters, jupiter's satellites or saturn's ring (with binoculars usually you cant see the ring but the whole saturn appears as a oval shape because of the ring). And for the dso's; for galaxies: m31, m33, m81 and m82, and m101 are great beginner targets; and for nebulas: m42 and m8 are the easiest to find and most brightest (which makes them more enjoyable), and if you are in the south half-semisphere, carina nebula is the nebula to go for. For the open star clusters: m45 and m11 are great. And for the globular clusters: m13, m92, m3, m5, m10 and m12 are great targets.

Maybe next time you could measure the radius of the circle and use a compass to mark the cut, that way no risk of damage

Interesting thing about the sun filter material in this video is it starts out as a clear plastic film with sun filter material laminated on both sides, at least the good stuff does, don’t cheap out on this and get a single sided filter. Even though only one is adequate protection they do this in case there is a pin hole in the sun filter material. This type of filter is used to observe eclipse etc. There are purpose specific telescopes that will allow you to observe the turbulence at the surface of the sun. Many years ago a telescope accessory manufacturer sold a eye peace that had a built in sun filter that replaced your eyepiece. Major problem, as the observer was looking at the sun the filter component in the eye piece started to heat up eventually shattered allowing the concentrated sun rays into the eye, blinding the observer. Be very careful looking at the sun, any filter that does not filter the sun BEFORE it enters the telescope’s optical path can overheat the telescope and damage it as well as burn your eye out. There are purpose specific telescopes that can handle the heat as well as filter out dangerous light.

That is the reason 3d printing came to my life. To prepare components and adapters for my telescope!

It means it blocks all frequencies relatively evenly. Some filters will allow specific frequencies to pass through them

Mainly UV AFAIK. This filter blocks 99.999% of everything. There are other filters like hidrogen-alpha for use with cameras which work differently.
