Kind of exciting in that that 6 was parked at the same time our 960 came off the showroom floor. Love the “constant reassurance” comment. ...Making sure we’re all following along.

Had a 1970 in High School through my college days and beyond. Loved that car. I did lots of mods on her. IPD springs, sway bars and shocks. Had a set of aluminum wheels on it. It was originally an Auto, but i found a 4 speed with overdrive in 1982 for in. What a difference it made. I sold the 164 in 1986. I have looked for it everywhere with out luck. Thanks for sharing . Brought back a lot of great memories.

This is a very cool , very easy project ! 1969 I was seventeen . I started my automobilelife with 142 and 144:s. The bootlid is no problem, all you need is a Swedish piasavakvast. Back in the day everyone had the piasakvast for the bootlid. Looking forward to follow this project.

When restoring the B30, try finding a K-cam, it really awakens the engine without loosing drivability. Also try to find steel gears for the cam, the old bacelit gear often shreds on the B30 since it's such a long cam. A shredded gear wont destroy the engine but will leave you stranded. Also, the front bearing for the cam usually gets beaten up on B30, but it's easy to replace.
@michaelheimbrand5424

I always thought that all B30's had steel gears from factory.
@daw7563
@daw7563 3 года назад
@@michaelheimbrand5424 not the ones I've worked on (5-6 of them). The gear on the crank is steel, but not compatible, so both gears have to be replaced. The one's I ordered was not OEM, and I don't think they existed as OEM (but I might be wrong). Cheers from Sweden!
@daw7563
@daw7563 3 года назад
Another tip for old B20/B30 when upgrading to a K-cam is to upgrade valve springs, just a tiny bit, or at least get new ones, to avoid valve float. There is a bunch of aftermarket parts in Sweden, I guess IPDUSA could have all of this. Otherwise there are many small companies in Sweden that can do worldwide shipping 👍
@daw7563
@daw7563 3 года назад
@@michaelheimbrand5424 the steel gears have a different and subtle metallic noise, so I guess that is Volvos reason to stick with bacelit. It was a luxury car after all 🙂

David! Awesome find. Sorry about the Stromburgs but way better than trying to fix old fuel injection! My 70 145 had Stromburgs that never worked right. Triple SUs would be amazing! The 164 is one of the smoothest cars I’ve ever driven. I didn’t buy it in 89, and I regret it.

im glad that david finally got into the 140 series. i too for the longest time didnt think i would but now i have 2 and honestly i love the 140. it is the perfect step between the amazon and the 240. if an amazon feels too old and a 240 feels to new then the 140 is the perfect choice. the 164 is just gorgeous

Hello David, I have a similar story to you. two years ago I bought a 1969 164 at a farm Auction for 175.00 CAD. Parked since 1985 but she started up first turn with nothing other than some ether and a fresh battery. If yours was parked with any gas in the tank look at getting a new tank.

Beautiful. Yours is exactly the same as mine, with the AC also. At some point in its life it got an M410 but it lost its CD175s to be replaced by SU H6 carbs. Works but theres an issue with the throttle return springs. I had to source correct wheels, had the servo rebuilt and did all the suspension and brakes. Just working on bodywork now. Its a lot of work. Dont get disheartened, mine was a basket case when I got it :-)

The trim surrounding the taillights and above the license plate was originally some sort of chrome - plating, or otherwise over the plastic. It faded fast from new. On my ‘71 142E that I owned in the very early ‘80’s, I ended up painting it all a semi-gloss black.

1 remark about towing a car on a trailer: NEVER load a car the wrong way around (EXCEPTION: if the car has the engine in the back like an old VW beetle or Porsche 911 you SHOULD load it backwards). Why? Because the weigh distribution is dangerous having that heavy-ass lump of an engine BEHIND the trailer axels. Loading it the way it was done in this video promotes oscilating instability. You need proper tung weight on the hitch coupling. In this case the saving grace was the heavy truck doing the towing. That said: cool car, nice score! I think these engines had phenolic cam gears. These are prone to cracking. You might want to change it for an aftermarket steel gear rather sooner then later. If that gear cracks the engine might end up with damaged/bent valves.

Nice car and video. I picked up my 164 few years ago and it was similar condition. Not driven since the 90's but I got it running pretty easy. I'm building a garage atm and going to start working more with the 164 when it's finished. Going to follow your project cos there is just never enough 164 stuff in the internet. Btw my radiator was also toasted so I got Universal Fabricated Aluminum Racing Radiator For Ford Mopar 24" x19" x3" from ebay. It fits in there but needed to modify the upper hose and the fitting in the cylinder head.

@darkiee69
@darkiee69 3 года назад
@@Wasaur The early models can have problems with worn cam shafts and valve rockers. That's due to bad oil seals that caused bubbles in the oil being pumped to the cams. It was worse on Volvos than on others because of the smaller oil pan due to the front beam. The cylinder linings had a tendency to sink down into the block too. If the engine is bad, see if you can find a B280 instead of the B28 that's in it now. If it rund, just drive it. It's been running between 1977 and 2005, so I think it's ok.

I'm looking forward to watching this restoration. I restored a '73 144 last year and it was a lot of fun. My 144 was in a bit better shape than this 164, so it will be interesting to follow along with David's progress. I would DEFINITELY inspect the inside of the gas tank... mine had quite a bit of rust and they no longer make replacements, so I had to restore the tank myself. VPAutoparts also sells seat covers (brown) for the 164... they're a bit spendy, but they would work well: vp-autoparts.com/en/artiklar/cover-rear-seat-140gl_164-73-74-brown.html
