Acetone or white vinegar are great choices for prepping a welding surface also if you don't have a degreaser on the ready. Some degreasers still tend to leave a light residue on the metal after it's been cleaned. Just another option for ya.
Quick tip, when bending steel there is always spring back and the amount of spring back differs with different thicknesses. Get some scrap and over bend it a degree or two until it springs back to exactly where you want it. Write the numbers down for the different thicknesses and the common angles that you will be bending! I love being a fabricator and it so much more rewarding doing it yourself and spending all the money you saved on beer 🍺!!!
Cool DIY! Worked at a knife company before the military and seeing some of the machines up close makes you want to have that in the garage just for the projects you wanna do in future. I’ll have to really try to convince the wife for a press after we’re done with the military(retirement) to do these type of DIY projects.
Believe me looking for parts for that 74 FSJ will set you back a year just for searching and if you find what you're looking for the amount of that part will set you back the amount of a full set of tires on your JL. I love custom one off parts. It says a lot when someone tries to figure out if it's factory or a old after market part. And then having the tools to make a one off part is cool. Then you can change the part many times till you have the part done like that picture in your head that only you can see. Fab work is a great thing to calm down and focus on its a great stress killer.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4_Ht1JfNqRw.html I like these... they keep the weight off of the weather striping... so won’t have to worry about tht getting ruined... there another brand tht holds it by the door hinges... but I can’t think of the brand for the life of me
I like what you did with the bottle jack release on the press. I have the same one and I hate using the end of the handle. Going to copy your design!! 😜 Is that just a faucet handle? Did you weld it on?
Just my local hardware store... nothing fancy.. was a faucet handle... drilled and notched out.... swag makes a nice 3D printed one... but was kinda expensive for what it was... hence my $1.39 part lol
