In my blog post, I show you 5 MORE ways to secure a thread for hand embroidery. It's funny, but I didn't realize I knew this many until I wrote it down. lol notoriousneedle.com/eight-ways-start-thread/

This is great. With the loop method how does the thread stay threaded? Is it just hanging on in the needle loop?
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 3 года назад
It’s threaded through the eye of the needle in the same way as if you had two separate strands of thread. But instead of two cut ends of floss on bothe sides of the eye of the needle, you have two cut strands on one side and a loop on the other side. And the ends of the strands just dangle from the eye, pulled through a few inches, like normal. Does that help?

This is great! But I'm using 3 strands for a current project, is it still possible to start using the loop method? 🤔

So I've never done cross-stitch before. I'm someone that crochets but really wanted to try it. I have a pattern I bought (a kit) and I read I should start in the middle. But the middle doesn't have the same color next to each other at all. Its one stitch in one color. The next is another color and so on. So is loop the best then? I'm so lost lol. I saw one lady that hops around and skips onto the next square that had that color but I don't know about all that. Would love some advice because I'm so intimated to even start!
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 2 года назад
Welcome to cross stitch! The reason why a lot of teachers recommend starting in the middle is so that your finished cross stitch will be centered on your fabric. Then you know you have enough room on the fabric to finish the pattern and frame it. You can do the one stitch in one color, then hop over a few stitches (just a FEW, like 5 at the MOST) and do the next stitches in the same color. If you do it this way, you just have to be careful that you’re counting accurately so you can fit in the stitches later that you skipped. Hope that helps!! I have a series of tutorials to help new stitchers that might also help you: www.NotoriousNeedle.com/StartHere

For the loop method…how did you string it in the needle?! Like from thread to needle?! How did you get it started. I’m a beginner and finally got the hang of it, but the 11ct and 14ct is still confusing to me. Like how do I know how many string to use.
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 3 года назад
Hi Carolina, when I thread a needle, I normally use what I call the Easiest Way to Thread a Needle (aka fold-over method). I wrote a little article about a couple of different ways to thread a needle and maybe you'll find one that works better for you. www.notoriousneedle.com/easiest-way-thread-a-needle/ For 14ct, I would recommend 3 threads and for 11ct, I would recommend 4 threads. But you can always use however many threads YOU want! So if you like a little of the fabric peaking in between your stitch, use fewer threads for less coverage. I like zero fabric showing through my stitches, so I tend to use waaaaay tooooo much floss. lol
@keirimelia8073
@keirimelia8073 10 месяцев назад
I'm still very confused 😅 how do you anchor it to the needle? How does it not just come off the needle?
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 10 месяцев назад
This is a good question! If the needle is the right size, it's just friction that holds the floss in the needle. It's only if the eye of the needle is too big that it will then fall off.

I've been doing cross stitch for about 4 months now and I've been using the knot method. I keep my projects very neat and organized but I want to start using the loop method. My only hang-up is that by doing the loop method I have two loose strands that fall out of my needle at every pull. I'm really frustrated I've tried to knot them but then I can't bury the thread at the end.
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle Год назад
Hi Rachel, I'm sorry you're so frustrated. It sounds like the eye of the needle you're using is too big. For instance, I frequently let go of my needle and let it dangle so that the floss untwists. You should be able to do this without the needle falling off. Try using a smaller needle, and that might help. Good luck!

I’m still not understanding the loop method. Doing it leaves me with a very short working thread and a long tail of extra thread.

I'm so confused, how are you getting a loop in the back of the loop start? I'm trying to make the poop emoji using the Dimensions Learn A Craft kit, and even their instructions sheet in unclear on how to start. I need help 😫
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 3 года назад
Hi Janeen! That must be so frustrating! Ack! The loop is created when you fold the floss in half. Let’s say you have one strand of thread. Fold it in half. Thread the needle so that both ends of that single strand are on one side of the eye of the needle. At the end of the thread at the other side of the needle is the fold. When you pull the needle and thread through the fabric, the fold forms the loop. Does that help?
@janeendegrave5074
@janeendegrave5074 3 года назад
@@NotoriousNeedle okay, yes, that helps! only now I have another question....how is the thread secured to the needle? unless I am still doing it wrong....the thread is just...through the eye of the needle. I can sew...I never thought doing cross stitch would be this confusing
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 3 года назад
Great! Yes, the thread is just through the eye of the needle. As long as you have a couple of inches of thread, it will stay. The only time the thread slips out is if it gets really short. You got this 😎
@char8405
@char8405 3 года назад
I am so happy I clicked on this video and read this comment thread LOL this is the exact issue I've been having since finding and wanting to use the loop start. "But what about the unsecure needle?!" Thank you thank you!! ❤️

I feel so dumb I can't figure out how to make the loop 😅
@NotoriousNeedle
@NotoriousNeedle 2 года назад
Aw, don't be so hard on yourself! The "loop" is actually just a fold. You have one strand of floss folded in half. Thread your needle with the ends of the floss on one side, and the fold on the other. Push your needle through the fabric, and the fold of the floss forms a loop on the other side of the fabric. Does that make sense?
