I remember the first time in my riding career I encountered surface dressing, late 70s ish. Shropshire County Council as it was then had used the biggest chippings thst the crusher could crush, needless to say, they didn't stick to the bitumen too well. This practice should've been outlawed years ago, may as well chuck marbles on the road.
I filmed this probably 5 weeks ago, and there's still loose chippings at junctions and in people's drive entrance and on footpaths. It's horrible stuff and we have a double load of it all in the centre of the road where they overlapped it. It's almost road vandalism. Manholes and grates get lower, I could rant on!!!
Unfortunately bikers aren't considered when it comes to road maintenance, road layout, and VED. We are a minority group that doesn't matter. £117 a year, a 2013 diesel Honda Civic we used to own was zero ved!
I'll be jumping to dji next time I think. What was the dB level set at? I messed up on my transalp offroad vid and set it wrong.. My only issue with the dji is the dynamic range can be quite off compared to the GPs. Over all dji are a better option.
If I'm honest I cannot remember the DB levels as I filmed this a while ago to put up while we're away. It's still not as good to my ears as the usual audio we record using the Rode setup and the Insta 360. We've still not perfected the riding audio direct to the DJI camera. Having used the DJI stuff all week while touring, there's no way I would ever go back to GoPro
Audio sounds fine to me Richard, but then again you always have good audio quality. I love my DJI Action 4 purchased on your advice and they are very good. Yes that road was dangerous If enough people sued them for accidents it would cost the council more than doing the road properly.
Totally agree! Loose Chippings are lethal, and pointless too. I have seen pot holes covered with them. The tar that they spray onto the road comes through soon after. They should fix the roads properly.
Audio & video both splendiferous quality! Yep, councils doing that gravel thing is, in my opinion, municipal vandalism. In a world where health & Safety bed wetters rule this gravel idiocy is incredulous!
I agree entirely , but quite how anyone could possibly vote for the predicted winners is way beyond me, unless of course you love every type of transport being by battery!
Ah Richard the age old Motovlogging audio quality conundrum, possibly the most complex equation in the biker community. The results were pretty good, a tad hot but not bad all the same. Have you tried your Hamma notebook mics, they seemed perfect with the Rode set up? I'm currently using the mic part of a cheap set of earbud headphones with the ear pieces cut off and a bit of fur ( cut from a fur scarf bought in a charity shop) as a dead cat. This seems to work pretty well and even picks up the exhaust note, the only issue is wind noise at higher speeds.
The way they "resurface" or roads now is disgusting, and is probably false economy. It certainly doesn't last long that's for sure. I think your audio there was pretty bang on,maybe just drop it a dB or two.
Completely agree. 👍👍 DB too high but a reasonable success. We've just been riding in Spain and France. It only highlights to us how bad British roads are.
It's just scary how bad things are getting Richard I am starting to think that they have no interest in how bad the roads get as it all aids the bigger plan to put people off driving either that or they get massive back handers from windscreen and shock absorber companies for the business that's going their way .As for the audio I thought it was not quite as good as it normally is to me just that little bit sort of fuzzier somehow but only slightly .👌👍take it steady on those chippings😉
I agree, it wasn't as good but just a test. We've just been riding in France and Spain and their roads put ours to shame. What is happening in England??
How in gods name councils are allowed to cover our roads with loose chippings there is no thought given to the dangers they put two wheeled road users in and the damage they cause to People and cars ! they never ever sweep up the excess ones and the morons that through them over the roads putting down way more than required then we have the idiots in 4 wheel drives that don't even slow down
I filmed this a few weeks ago and that road still has loads of loose gravel, especially at junctions. Some hasn't stuck leaving just exposed tar. It's a disgrace
If I see these fkn chippings ahead I turn around and find an alternative route and this is in my car. i don't want some wanker approaching too fast from the opposite direction and throwing up stones against the side of my car, glass or windscreen. Will have to have the windscreen replaced on my van as earlier this year an HGV big truck threw up a stone which hit smack in the middle of my windscreen with an almighty thwack. The chip has now turned spread into a huge horizontal crack across the lower 1/4 of the screen. If on my bike(s) I just turn around. I would rather ride the extra miles than drop my bike or for it to get damaged. Maybe a terse letter to your local authority requesting they provide details of their risk assessments that they conducted prior to laying these stones as they are dangerous for motorcyclists. Inform them that you have now put them on notice so if you suffer any damage, loss or injury or death as a result of them putting these stones down you will sue them. They are a menace and lethal. Local authorities and Highways Agency should be BANNED from using them.
@@alexmorgan3435 👍 I also own a Transit Custom with heated screen. Dread to think what that costs to replace. Our own small estate got the treatment a couple of years back. None of the residents wanted it. We staged a mini protest by not moving our cars. All got very heated with threats of calling the police. It still looks a mess with a double overlap of tar in the centre. Our neighbours kids managed to walk tar from this over their carpets!
@@Banditmanuk A heated screen I should imagine would cost £££££££ to replace. A nice feature so you don't have to scrape ice and to prevent misting up. I don't think mine is heated but not sure. Pretty sure it isn't, but it's large and I'm dreading how much it will be to replace. I'm going to wait right until the MOT pointless getting it done before as the replacement might well collect another stone. I am also thinking of paying for it myself as my insurance will rocket even though it is only £50 excess for windscreen replacement. About 4 years ago a neighbour backed into my car caving in the driver's door. They admitted responsibility and after a lot of argy bargy with my insurers I insisted it was repaired and NOT written off. However despite it being recorded as a NON FAULT claim my car/van insurance has rocketed since. Also my bike insurance. I didn't realise that insurers routinely do this ripping people off who have not been at fault where a full recovery of costs has been obtained from the party who actually caused the damage and losses. So wrt windscreen claim I would end up paying through the nose if I claimed. Just hope the cost to replace if I am paying is not too expensive. Wow the protest you said you had in your close to stop the LA putting down chippings sounds like guerrilla war fare. The local councillors who were pushing this probably have vested financial interests. Follow the money ........... ATB.
Great audio Richard and picture, I use a Action 3 on the bars (no external mic) and 4 on the helmet paired with the mic 2, brilliant kit👍 PS. I have the Insta 360 2 too for unusual shots, don’t ask me about my camera collection and don’t tell my lovely wife.😉😜
That's a great camera combo in my opinion. Do you ever post post content onto RU-vid? Unfortunately Gopro have squandered their market lead in the Action camera section. DJI and Insta for us. 👍
Question lol I'm looking at getting a action 3 with there usb-c mic plug in adapter but coming from gopro what do you use to get video from the dji camera and edit it to upload onto RU-vid Go pro app was great direct to phone could edit etc but I got sick of the go pro not letting me transfer files I could see and watch on camera but always said corrupted when tried to transfer I've looked in Google store there doesn't seam to be a dji app for camera and advice cheers
I don't bother with apps. At the end of the filming I simply pop the mini memory card out of the camera ( it's next to the battery) I transfer the files onto my PC using a card reader. Edit them on Adobe Premier Elements and then upload to RU-vid. I Guarantee the DJI camera will be way more reliable than GoPro
@Saddlebags73 For me, it's the time taken to remove the excess chippings. I go over this road most days, and there's still loose gravel at junctions, driveways, and just sitting on paths. Probably 6 or 7 weeks since I originally filmed this.
@@alexmorgan3435 Agreed. One of the locals on this road also subscribes to my channel. He put in an official complaint to the council. They say if they sweep it within 3 days that they are working to official guidelines. They didn't even fix all the potholes before they did it!
