Although not all of India untill 1846.when the Sikh Punjabi Empire was defeated and the Punjab region and its territories were taken by the British East India company. Cornwallis also was named Governor general and Commander and chief of India. In 1786. And is known for passing the Cornwallis code a series of acts that helped East India company rule of India. By improving on certain areas. Pretty much laying the foundation of Brtish empire rule of India. He did the same in Ireland. Suppressing the Irish Rebellion in 1798 . Where he was made lord lieutenant commander and chief of Ireland in 1798.and helped with the act of Union 1801 which led to Ireland on going rule by the English the Brtish empire. In the beginning of the 19th century. So Cornwallis fingers where all over former Colonies of the British Empire America Ireland and India

Knew of the Bengali Famine of India in 1770 the American colonists such as Dickinson feared what happened in India could happen in America. Dickinson said where now casting their eyes on America as a new theater to exercise there talents of rapine oppression and cruelty. Which gave fuel leading to the Boston Tea Party on Decmber 16 1773.

@@steelnerve5683 Well, as the letters were to his son they were primarily focused upon family life and his sons health. There was some interesting insight into his views on Tipu Sultan, his opposing general in the Agnlo-Mysore wars, and I think that Cornwallis respected Tipu's prowess as a commander which was quite suprising considering British attitudes towards Indians at the time. There was almost no mention of his time in America or Yorktown and not much about the military campaigns in India as i think he wanted to distance that part of his life from his son. It was a super interesting project, when the letters have been published I'll be able to edit the link into this comment.

They treated Indians with respect, took Indian wives and many officers converted to Hinduism too ! A fellow commander at the Siege of Toulon was Rear Admiral Hood who was also at Yorktown, he was the one attempting to reach Cornwallis at Yorktown but blocked by the French Navy.

@sheldon-cooper another one for me is American Civil War was only 49 years before WW1. From hand-cranked gatling guns and the first iron clad vessels to tanks, submarines and airplanes.

One of the most forgotten things about this war is that the colonist made it clear they didn't want independence, Washington himself used flags to show that they were revolting but not rebelling, independence wasn't taken serious until the King forced their hands.

Cornwallis's quote (whether he said it or not doesn't matter) expresses an old sentiment in English history (at least since the Norman Conquest). Since 1066 English history is filled with quabbles in the royal family, rebellions, and civil wars, but always afterward the 2 sides found common ground and buried the hatchet. An argument could be made that by not totally eradicating the opposition, the seeds of the next conflict were constantly being sown Yet, even beheading Charles I did not end that Civil War. Charles II waited for his chance as France's guest.

During the battle of concord British troops flushed out a rebel sniper who is reported to have said “an Englishman’s home is his castle”…

This edit gives me goosebumps every time I watch with Cornwallis’s last line “Everything will change…everything has changed…” with the amazing soundtrack in the background you added. Have you watched the AMC series “Turn: Washington’s Spy’s”? One of my favorite characters in it and thought they did an amazing job with it/him was the portrayal of the honorable Major John Andre. Was actually just near his memorial in Tappan NY a few weeks ago.

Yes, Cornwallis was so honorable that he refused to surrender to the Americans, instead making his adjutant do it. Honorable and gutless.

Unknown to most Americans, at least half of the men who served in the British Army in the Revolution were born in America. The Revolution was a civil war in many respects as much as it was a war for independence. Sadly many of the Loyalists were lynched after the wars end, those that could escaped to Canada or went to Britain, but thousands were murdered.

A mistake modern americans and modern britts make is that it was a war of us vs them and different people. Its easy to think they were diferent specially looking at the USA in which alot of migration happened later from all over Europe then later latin america and asia. Thing is, the people of those days were British descendents, they came mostly from Brittain, there was some that were loyal to the crown, some to the recolution, alot of them saw themselfs as the same people, but seperated by idiology, geography and difference of treatement.

Just a sideshow in a war the British were fighting all over the world. It was far more important to the colonials and to the present day USA than it ever was for Britain.

@@Epicilem I was just hoping people didn’t walk away from the film thinking Cornwallis was a bad guy. I don’t know if he looked down the nose at the rebels in real life, and I think if you had to pick a British general during the American revolution to vilify, Cornwallis would be a poor choice. But then again he’s the antagonist, while Tavington (Banastre Tarelton) is the true villain, which even then is debatable. The British never locked patriots in a church and burnt it down, most British generals and soldiers were devout Christians and would never done as such, and which if that had happened in real life is something Americans would never let the British forget. In reality, Tavington would of been court-martialed and hung, with the leaders/generals of the British colonial forces launching a massive PR campaign to rectify the horrid news. Might even reach the home islands and would wholesale be condemned by citizens and the aristocracy alike as utterly barbaric. Might reach other countries with similar condemnation.
