Kinnock was such a breath of fresh air after taking over from Michael Foot, and I used to enjoy his clashes with Margaret Thatcher during PMQs. He was the human face as compared to the Iron Lady. Ironically, he had the same problems with the left wing of the Labour party, the Militant Tendency during his time, as Keir Starmer has now with the Corbynites. I would agree with Kinnock that the Conservative party now cannot hold a candle to the Conservative party of Thatcher or Major. Its striking that he called the Conservative politicians of his time, patriots, who would put the interest of the country first. Which goes to show how much contempt he probably holds for the current self-centered, entitled Tories.

I have always had the impression that Lord Kinnock was/ is a passionate honest and ardent politician. I remember he was a staunch orator and debater during the PMQs. He gave the decent prime minister John Major very hard time. It never crossed my mind that he wouldn’t be one of the best British Premiers. He broke my heart when he didn’t become one. I still can’t figure out why he didn’t become what Tony Blair did!!

The electorate has been clear about what they wanted when he was in charge of labour. They rejected him and Labour Party in a very clear way

@@user-bt8cz9nv4x Well that’s democracy for you. Or we are going to have an electoral system that rules and regulations are made clear beforehand and observed or we should just declare a dictatorship. Tell me, who is to decide what is wrong or right? The people who are successful, of financial independent means? The military? The elite? Those who live from payday to payday? The positives and negatives of Brexit depend upon individual priorities and preferences.

@@lewismclean9960 It’s the way the country is. As in the majority of the electorate is not and has never been leaning towards the hard left. Tony Blair was a centrist, centre left. He was a breath of fresh air, I voted for him in 2005, as in labour.

I see it's 'Kier' and not 'Kire' - though they sound the same! (Kire means "A different state of mind, thought, sense, and power. For example: If the kire was here in 2018 he would change the world, Apparently it's an Olde English word!)

@@JackBailey2 Yes, Jack. I realised as soon as I'd pressed 'Send' that I'd got 2 letters mixed up! I'm old, have a cataract and arthritic fingers! Forgive me. My real reason to comment was simply to point out that 'Kire' is an Old English word meaning various things. I don't really bother mjch abuot speling thees dais! My neighbour thinks Sir Keir was named after the famous toolmaker/carmaker 'Kia' !

Funny to hear how Iain Dale links almost every sentence with a rather large 'Erm' ! I wish I had 10p for every 'Er', 'Erm' and 'Um' he says during his programme. He's not the only one of course; dear Shelagh Fogarty once said her 'Signature UM' over 800 times in one show! These 'fillers' are common and are there to let the brain catch up while the mouth is on 'tick-over'! (Yes, I note that Neil Kinnock likes to 'Er and stray' at lot too - but he's over 80!) I think it's better to have a 'silence' instead - but on radio, it can sound odd and makes people wonder if a fuse has blown! Even Iain agrees that 'Erm' is better than, 'Know what I mean?'!
