damn, probably the best instructions for a board game ever, I'm really thankful. I just started playing with a friend, we went through the rulebook and started with the first scenario, but failed quite hard at the end :D we did some minor mistakes (which ended up making things more difficult after watching this) so now we are looking forward to our second try! :)

I have had this game on my radar for a little bit as it was recommended via various websites as a good solo game but was on the fence until I watched this video and found that it was not too difficult to learn the rules and it looked like a cool game. I am relatively new to gaming but three expansions and several adventure decks later this is one of my top 5 favorite games. Thank you so much for this great video; it really prompted me to purchase this game and I have had many hours of pleasure and enjoyment playing it.

I wanna thank you for having made these videos, not only because they are fun and letting me enjoy this game that if I ever have, it'll take a long time to actually buy one, but mostly because of your really, really good explanation of the minor details of the game. I am currently thinking about trying to develop a tabletop game of my own, be it to try to actually make a big thing or just to play with friends (or just for self-satisfaction of doing it), but I am very attached to systems, and dice rolling was seeming a bit... off. I heard this game few to none dice rolling in it, and since you're taking minutes to describe the thought process, as a player, of every aspect of the game, it actually gives me A LOT of insight about how it can work with fixated numbers. It's risky to work with fixated numbers, because it gets too close to a video-game, and well, that is not the goal. It's helping out immensely. Thanks a bunch for putting all this care into every second of these videos.

When you exhaust a hero (for example) you shouldn't exhaust any attachments, and vice versa. I guess this could be important in future scenarios or with certain cards. Great videos, and helps to clarify things for me.

JUST started playing the game and I greatly appreciate these videos ("A wizard is never late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."). 1. Can you declare more than 1 defender or only one per enemy attack phase? I wasn't clear on this. 2. If there is no shadow effect, do the enemies still attack for their normal card damage or is there no attack? Basically, are you only resolving the shadow effect or is it Shadow Effect + Enemy Card Attack?

I think we should use 1 resource to play Quick Strike, Exhausting Legolas to attack the Forest Spider. This should defeat the Forest Spider and allow you to place 3 progress tokens on Flies and Spiders, leaving 5 quest points. then I would save the remaining two tokens to allow the possibility of playing gandalf on our next turn, or swift strike if we get ambushed by a bunch of enemys. then I would quest with Thalin (to take advantage of his ability, leaving Gimli as your potential defender.

Hi! Thanks for great instructions with all your video's. Just a question with regards to 8:30'ish. If the card specifically says "Put the progress tokens on the quest", does it go to the quest or the active location? Is the active location always the buffer even if the card says "quest"?

@11:05 Can you elaborate on that? The rule book says nothing about what and when you can use Event cards. Do you have to purchase them during the Planning phase, and then use them whenever, or can you purchase and use them at any phase? The errata states that during the Quest phase, Event cards may be used at the beginning and end of each step. Not sure what that means.
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 5 лет назад
You pay for them during any phase (where they can be played). The rule book talks quite a bit about events, but you may find it easiest to download the rules as a PDF file and then you can do a word search for "events", to see the various times when it talks about their uses.

I am a new board game player and I love coop games which I can play solitaire. I have followed a lot of videos about different games which can be played solo. You're one of my favorite contributors to this hobby. I really enjoy your videos and your LOTR lcg videos came just in time because I was contemplating on getting into this game. Although I'm not a big fan of legs, I'm a fan of the LOTR universe, I decided to give it a try. Although I have a question. I'd rather spend my hard earned money on different games. Lcgs tend to milk our wallets due to the regular releases of those expansion packs. Would it be enough to just stick to the base set and have a good time with it? Or do I need to purchase other expansion packs, big and small, to enjoy this game? What I'm trying to say is, can the base set give me replay value, if I accomplished all the quests? Thanks in advance and more power!
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 10 лет назад
I think you can find quite a bit of extra replay value in the box, if you try the scenarios with different combinations of decks. That said, it's going to come down to your personal tastes. One person may really enjoy redoing the quests, another may want new ones.
@arcur0
@arcur0 9 лет назад
***** I know this is a late entry but you can do the following to get more out of the core and adventure packs to get more replay value. You can increase the difficulty. Try building new Hero groups and see how well you can do with the new play challenges. For an expert level challenge, players can attempt to defeat all 3 scenarios using the same combination of players, decks, and heroes. The score from each scenario can then be added together to get a single score measuring overall success on the entire campaign. For a “nightmare” level challenge, do not reset threat, hit points, or player decks at the beginning of each scenario. When playing such a campaign, the players should start with the “Passage through Mirkwood” scenario, follow with the “Journey Down the Anduin” scenario, and finish with the “Escape from Dol Guldur” scenario The flip side is, if you find yourself playing a scenario and hard to beat they have new rules to allow for easy play: www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/lotr-lcg/support/easy-mode/LOTR_Easy_Mode.pdf Here is the link to all rules: www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=129&esem=4 Enjoy...

How exactly does it work with more than 1 player? Do we reveal encounter cards for each player in quest phase? i.e. do we end up with adding two encounter cards in total per turn with two players? Or does the second player "quest" against the same encounter roster? When it says "the first player..." does it mean always the first player in the game, or the one that is performing the action / plays? Do we both travel to the Old Road , therefore are allowed to ready two characters of ther "first" player, or does each of us ready one character? Do we attack/defend separately or all together? I'm super confused and I can't find any info :(

With Legolas's special ability and Blade of Gondolin, don't you have to put the progress tokens directly on the quest, not on the active location?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 10 лет назад
When you have an Active quest, you must always place tokens on it first, but you may put any "spill over" tokens onto the Scenario quest. For example, if the traveled to quest needed one more quest token and Legolas killed an enemy, you would put one on the Active quest, completing it and then the extra token would go to the Scenario quest. Hope that helps.
@penguinaluva
@penguinaluva 10 лет назад
***** What about character cards such as Lorien Guide which says "After Lorian Guide commits to a quest, place 1 progress token on the active location."? I always thought that because it specified "active location" here, that meant that the active quest and active location were two different types of cards. (Background: I'm not trying to be a bad guy or a troll. I own this game and play it a lot, but I'm about to start a game night with my boyfriend and was looking for tutorials on the games we own in order to share them with others that would come to the game night. That's how I came across your tutorial, and I honestly want to know if I've been playing it wrong, or correctly.) I also have another question: We've always been confused about which point you progress to the next quest at. For example if you complete quest 1b during the questing phase, should you turn over immediately to quest 2a and 2b, which in some cases would cause new things to happen, or do you want until the turn is over (after the refresh phase)?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 10 лет назад
Marina Nudel No worries, no trolling presumed :) Page 14 rulebook: "Note that if there is an active location (see page 15), progress tokens are placed on that location until it is explored, and the remainder are then placed on the current quest." Page 15 rulebook: "an active location acts as a buffer for the currently revealed quest card. Any progress tokens that would be placed on a quest card are instead placed on the active location." As for flipping quest cards, it happens right away. Page 22 rulebook: "Players immediately advance to the next stage of a quest as soon as they place a number of progress tokens equal to or greater than the number of quest points the current quest card has. Additional progress tokens earned against the quest do not carry over to the next stage."

***** Yeah, but the Golden rule in the front of the rules says that if a card's text conflicts with an established rule, the card takes precedent. Legolas' ability specifically says to put them on the quest. Am I taking it too literally?

Cool tutorial! Question..In the combat phase (attacking the enemy)..If I have 1 enemy card, and x3 character cards that are "ready"...I understand that I could pool/add all three character cards together and total up their attack strength to take out the 1 enemy card. However, would I be able to have each character/hero card attack the enemy card individually one-by-one? - in other words character card A,B & C all get to take an attack turn on the 1 enemy card. Thx in advance :)

You would have to pool them all together - you can't make separate attacks. From the rule book: "A player may declare multiple characters as attackers against a single enemy, pooling their attack strength into a single value. A player has the opportunity to declare 1 attack against each enemy with which he is engaged."

Why didn't the Orc attack one selected defender ? I thought every enemy has to attack before the heroes attack ?

Sven Redecker sorry rodney, have no sound here, did legolas work as defender ?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 9 лет назад
Sven Redecker I think you'll find it easier to follow with sound. At the 6 minute mark the Orc attacks as well, but I state that I'm not declaring a defender (this means the attack damage will all have to be assigned to one of my Heroes). It's a risky move, but I did this so I would have 2 heroes free to attack, rather than exhausting one as the defender.

Hello , I have another question... cant find it anywhere... If the current quest card has for example 6 "lives" left, and I have to put 8 progress tokens on it, what do I have to do with the last 2 tokens?? Just discard the last 2 or put the last 2 on the next quest card?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 6 лет назад
When you have extra quest tokens to place on a location you've 'traveled to' (that is, one removed from the staging area to put by the quest deck), any extra progress you would add to that new priority location (after completing it), would go onto the quest card. However, when you complete a Quest card, the extras are lost, and do not get added to the next reveal quest card.

Do you decide to defend only to avoid shadow effects like the one you revelead first (+3 for undefending attack)? Because if you do not defend and attack, you are going to take that damage anyway, am I correct? thanks and great videos!!
@jeeperscreepers7
@jeeperscreepers7 9 лет назад
oh, I watched the video carefully and if you do not defend an attack, your hero is gonna take ALL the damage (armor value doesn't count). Ok, now I have clear the benefits of declaring defenders :D

Right. If you have an active location, it takes priority over the scenario quest.

Sir Just clarification, a card have a "FORCED" or other ability (exept "WHEN REVEALED") and i didn't kill that card on my phase, in the next phase that card engage me again, and every time that card engage me its ability always trigger?.. sorry for my english ^^
@WatchItPlayed

Once an enemy engages you, it stays engaged with you.

sir i mean if that card attack me again his "FORCED" ability continues to effect on me?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 9 лет назад
Gelo Dugan Yes. But it will depend on the wording. For example if it said "Forced: If a Dwarf is defending it takes 1 damage", well, then it only happens if the Defender is a dwarf.

how long does it take to beat a quest for solo play? just realized this series has 13 videos...crazy...
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 6 лет назад
There's 7 parts here (some of the other 'parts' are discussions, answering questions, etc). A session is likely closer to an hour. In these videos I'm talking through everything I'm doing, reminding people of rules, etc. Things you wouldn't have to worry about in your own plays :)
@Jayd3z
@Jayd3z 6 лет назад
thanks! for me, friday actually takes close to an hour to play haha (around 50 minutes), i'm guessing friday for you probably takes 20 minutes? maybe i'm not too familiar with all the rules

Familiarity with the rules helps - and so does losing quickly :) That can shorten the game as well!

Wait, I thought you could only declared a character as defender if they had a sentinel title...?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 5 лет назад
Hey Jennifer, Sentinel, let's you declare yourself as a defender for 'another' player who is being attacked, but any character can defend against an attack directed at their player. Hope that helps!

@@WatchItPlayed Ok, one last question hehe I am going through the first quest from the core game, in Mirkwood. I chose a random path after the fork in the road and the final leg of the quest was I had to keep playing until I found and defeated Ungoliant's Spawn, but the quest card has a 0 quest points. Do I just fight the Spawn card when it comes out and not have to do any quest resolution since that card is now at zero? Furthermore, do more encounter cards come out after each round the Spawn isn't defeated, or no since it is the boss and there's nothing to resolve in the quest phase? Or is there? :D Ok that should be it from me after this 😂
