I think one of the most important categories was missed in this review - "scenario design". One of my biggest complaints about Marvel LCG is that the boss fights feel kinda samey, both in terms of mechanics and theme. And yes, I know, different villains make the game feel different, but compare this to the scenario design of LOTR - in one scenario you are riding giant Mumakils across the Harad dessert trying to outrun a warg hunter party; in another one you are stuck in the dead marshes, or sneaking into Moria's deep tunnels after fighting the Watcher in the Water - the LOTR scenarios have not only great and cinematic themes, but also mechanic and rule twists that make every quest memorable, while pushing players to adopt new tactics and strategies. This is a huge point for replaybility, and quite frankly, even if we included AH LCG in this contest, I would still say LOTR has the most unique and fun scenario design of them all :)

You’re actually not wrong at all. Both of these games, in my opinion, have very enjoyable (but vastly different) scenarios. Replayability was close but due to the changes in gameplay the heroes provide in Marvel Champions, it took the category. I will admit, they are both incredibly fun! In my review of LotR LCG, I mentioned how a part of me didn’t want to like it. The reason I didn’t want to like it was because that would mean I had yet another LCG that would addict me. Unfortunately, LotR LCG got its hooks in me and now I have two LCG’s that are both going to entice me to collect the whole thing! Both are very engaging and engrossing games. Just the description you gave me alone on LotR LCG makes me want to play it again. You know a game is great when just thinking about the game makes you want to play it. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. It will be the reason LotR LCG gets brought out to the table this week! Take care.

LOTR is the deeper, but more demanding game. It's got flexible deckbuilding, but difficulty that will force you into spending more time in deckbuilding vs Marvel being more pick-up- and play.

The deck-building in LotR blows MC out of the water. If I would’ve compared more than just the core set, I’m pretty sure the results would’ve been different. You’re right about your comparison.

All three solo/coop LCGs from FFG are excellent. It just comes down to preferences. Go with the theme you like. Then think about what kind of game you are looking for. Marvel is the most streamlined game of the three, more approachable and easier to deck build for. LotR is for us who like challenging puzzles and crunchy deck building. Arkham Horror has the best stories and innovative scenario design and are perfect for gamers who like a campaign style game.

Although I haven’t played AH, I agree with you. MC and LotR are very enjoyable. The deck-building in LotR is very addicting! It was my favorite part of the game. It was nice seeing the beginnings of MC while playing LotR. MC is streamlined by comparison. I’m actually sure that having more expansions for LotR will increase the replayability drastically. Thanks for joining the conversation. Take care.

Have them both and really enjoy them. I have to give it to LOTR personally for me because I like the theme more, the art is much more beautiful and I like the deeper deck building experience. Also still waiting on my favourite hero Punisher to show up in Champions while Boromir, Legolas and Treebeard as my tops are all present in the LOTR. But can’t go wrong with either one!

Yeah, both are great! I think MC is streamlined compared to LotR. Also, I agree LotR is the better deck-building experience. It was really difficult to choose a winner. That’s actually a good thing because that means that for fans of both franchises, there’s a great game for both! So far I’ve collected everything for MC. Personally, I want Gambit, Cable, Deadpool, Punisher, Ghost Rider and Daredevil. I feel like there’s still several heroes they could use. Here’s hoping!

Great idea for a video. Some good alternate categories in the comments as well. I think Multiplayer and Core Boxes are both pretty legitimate criteria. Any deck building game that allows me to play/see more of my cards during gameplay is a big plus. THE 40 card minimum deck size for MC and the ability to discard and draw back up to hand size allows me to actually see most of the cool cards i spent so long carefully putting in my deck. Mechanics: Marvel Champions Theme, Scenario Variance, and Overall: LOTR
@SoloBoardGamingKnight
@SoloBoardGamingKnight Год назад
Great input! Being able to see every card in your deck is a huge pro. This video was actually difficult due to the fact that both games are very well made. They both are incredibly faithful to the source material. When it comes to scenarios, I based it solely on the core box. If compared to expansions, you may be right. To be honest, both games have knocked it out of the park when it comes to expansions. There are so many call-backs for fans of both franchises.

@@SoloBoardGamingKnight it’s great but I guess it needs a decent investment to really see it shine. The core game alone is OK but with only three missions the story is not so epic. I invested in the Dunwich Legacy cycle and it really upped the experience! I guess that’s the downside compared to the other two…. The campaign nature demands a bigger investment, but then perhaps the payoff is greater? FYI I have only played Arkham and LoTR… I didn’t particularly like LoTR felt it was too punishing!
@SoloBoardGamingKnight
@SoloBoardGamingKnight 2 года назад
@@Table.Fables LotR can be brutal. What you mentioned is the biggest downside to LCG’s. You do really need to invest in several packs or expansions to really reap the benefits of the game. Having a continuous story across expansions kind of stinks but I have heard really great things about it. My fear is actually liking it. That’s what happened with MC and it’s getting a little bit out of hand. Still, great game.
@iamponer

@@SoloBoardGamingKnight you actually don't have to buy several packs anymore to get the full stories/campaign for Arkham Horror Lcg. They changed the retail model from mythos packs to separate campaign boxes and player card boxes, which makes it a lot easier to pick and choose what you want to expand the game with.
@SoloBoardGamingKnight

Great review! Not sure if I agree that LOTR LCG has a lot of replay ability. I mean, In theory it does, but the scenarios are so hard, and you need such specific decks for each mission, that once defeated, I had no desire whatsoever to play them again. By contrast, I’ve probably fought Rhino 20+ times…when testing out a new deck, introducing players to the game, getting a new hero, etc. There is one area I think LOTR is MUCH better than Marvel LCG…and that is the end of the game. In LOTR, you are white knuckling until the very last moment…in Marvel LCG, when you know the enemy is at a certain level of health, I usually just math it out and don’t even take my last turn. So, the very end can be quite anti-climatic. The guys at SUASD had the same issue with the game. Again, great review, thanks again.
@SoloBoardGamingKnight
@SoloBoardGamingKnight 2 года назад
Thank you! I absolutely agree about replayability. Personally, the modules really help MC feel fresh. I too have fought Rhino countless times! I also agree on how the ending can sometimes be predictable but the journey there is awesome. LotR and MC share a lot of similarities. This was a comparison of just the core set. To be honest, they both are great! I tend to have fun with MC a bit more at the end. Great games and this was a fun video to make! Thanks for joining the conversation!

I think Lotr after played both 10+ games is way better. Since difficulty is harder in Lotr, you make more thought on deck building and combos and you would play scenario multiple times. Marvel once, you beat, you are facing same villain but maybe only change hero.
@SoloBoardGamingKnight
@SoloBoardGamingKnight Год назад
Marvel Champions is much more streamlined in comparison. Both are actually very well made LCG’s. It was really difficult to choose one over the other because of the high quality they both offer. The deck-building portion of LotR is phenomenal!
@AndyP998

@@SoloBoardGamingKnight Yes its quite streamlined and can offer more to new players. But i think longevity wise, Lotr takes edge mainly for deckbuilding, various objectives and slightly more difficult overall playstyle.

For me LOTR by a long shot, although i may be biased as im not a fan of superheroes and leotards etc Id say Marvel for the younger player and its also alot more easier, LOTR if you know your deck building skills and want to step it up etc as LOTR can be a challenge and this one will last you years.

I'd be happy for a retheme of champions with lotr IP. Played probably 50+ games of lotr back in the day, but the difficulty is such a barrier. It'll have you chasing specific cards costing you big money and you'll still lose the majority of the time. I play VS tcg so I'm kind of burnt out on marvel ip.
