Sam’s ultimate fate of traveling to the Grey Havens after Rosie’s death is one of my favorite parts of the whole story, because Sam is always sort of torn between simple life in the Shire and the grander more spectacular world of the Elves, to which Frodo becomes connected. So after giving the Shire all he has to give in his long lifetime, when he’s no longer needed there, he gets to find peace over the sea and see Frodo again. It’s a testament to how much they love each other than even 60 years later, Sam still makes that massive journey so they can reunite. So I have to personally disagree with Sean; I think it’s a perfect ending for Sam. It shows that he too was changed by the journey on a fundamental level, and there was still an unfulfilled need in him after he’d spent a whole lifetime in the Shire. It’s bittersweet and beautiful.
