@emergencyawesome are you going to make a video breakdown for the new season 2 trailer of The Rings of Power that came out 3 days ago?! Would love to watch it!
Truthfully did people really hate this series so much? I was entertained by it and enjoyed the ride. I am an avid fan of the books but people gotta realize it is hard to put books into shows without a few changes
The way they handle things is interesting. Galadriel is a sorceress not a warrior which is an unnecessary change. Trying to make it seem like a father is forcing his daughter to do something bc ..well it's his daughter is silly and unnecessary to the story and also not apart of the books at all. So this character named Galadriel does not resemble her at all. I like what her motivation is that was good. Too much of these proto Hobbits. In fact they are not needed at all and have no place in this story or time which is glaringly obvious. The Slow pace of the Gandalf reveal and the clumsy and almost obvious way too soon reveal of Sauron could have been done much better. I like Elf bro but his story with the Lady in the town being the only brave one not written well and serves only to have her be a strong female lead in a series more worried about portraying every woman as strong as opposed to relatable. The series looks amazing but when you go out of your way to "fix" what the source material does you end up with stuff like the later seasons of the witcher, new Star wars and star trek, the wheel of time and willow. Series and Movies that don't respect or even feel like what they are trying to make. At least the new Alien Movie, Romulus, looks amazing.
i dont care what people say, i loved season 1 and i am super exited about season 2! people hang themself so much that the show should do precisely like the book says with the timeline etc. Even Lotr trilogy went outside the book and didnt fully follow the timeline and no one complained then!
The black goo could be the balrog. When Gandalf and the balrog fell into the lake at the bottom of the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, it became "a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake".
@Lars951 Huh? Guess you never read that part about the Balrog named Durin’s Bane in JRR Tolkien’s own writing………..🤨 hint the one that fought Gandalf at that bridge in Khazad-Dum…….. 😉 ……. “A thing of slime, stronger then a strangling snake”……. Hahahaha……….. try reading Tolkien instead of something you found on the internet……….. 😂
What I was trying to explain, perhaps not clearly enough, is that it's in the balrog's nature to be either a thing of flame or a thing of slime. My thought was that the black goo could be Durin's Bane in it's slime state.
If you pause at the right frame in that scene with Galadriel and Elrond you can see that the figures surrounding them have glowing blue eyes. I heard a theory that it's barrow wights... even though they shouldn't exist in the second age.
Cirdan the Shipwrights is confirmed for season 2 and he’s the original owner of Narya, not Celebrimbor. :) Cirdan survives all the way until the 3rd age when Gandalf arrives at the gray havens and is given Narya as part of his arrival in Middle-Earth
It's *Angband* which was Morgoth's fortress in the first age, and sunk forever along with all of Beleriand at the end of the War of Wrath. I suspect this tower is Barad-Dûr, which Sauron began to constuct around SA-1000, but which required the power of the One Ring to complete, around SA-1600. That thing is an unbelievable monster, many miles high in my imagination, designed of course to strike fear in the heart of any who should gaze upon it. It's important because the One Ring was made in Mordor in Orodruin whilst Celebrimbor was working on the other rings in Eregion. Sauron returned to Eregion with One in hand, so that he could bind the others to the One. I think it's showing that while he was gone, Sauron also finished himself a castle... Which leaves the question of what ruins were Guyladriel and her company in at the beginning of season 1? Maybe we'll never know. It will be sad if it is Angband because that should absolutely be impossible..
I’m a simple man with simple pleasures. I did not dislike the first season of this show. I really enjoyed it. I also loved watching The Wheel of Time. I think folks are really just making a fuss & raising the bar too high for high fantasy.
Take every show for what it is. Not every show can be perfect but it can still be enjoyable - I enjoyed S1 and watching the wheel of time lead me to the books.
It’s not much to ask a studio adapting your favorite IP to respect the source material. If they wanted to make some generic high fantasy with shiny CGI and a lack luster story then they should have done it under a different name. Peter Jackson made an incredible adaptation with a much smaller budget and it’s easy to see the passion put into that work unlike this inaccurate cash grab.
@@ryandelatte3294 Id argue it is a lot to ask. Yes, they could have been more respectful to the source material - but would you guys still find faults, most likely as you want perfection. Don't get me wrong, S1 wasn't my favourite show of the year and I wouldn't rank it that highly but that's nothing to do with not being accurate to source material. I did enjoy watching it however.
Many folks seem to think they know better. No clue on exactly what Amazon has the rights to and are super judgey. They’re totally doing the source material justice. They didn’t buy the entire silmarillion for god sakes. Just enjoy this amazing show. Also, PJ was basically doing a remake of something, these guys are taking moments and short stories, and writing so much from scratch. I hope they keep going, it’s been fine so far.
@@johnord684 it's well established that the show is not following the canonical timeline or else we wouldn't have seen the Balrog of Khazad Dum in season 1.
Looks good, and maybe even taking steps to address some of the issues raised with the first season. I didn’t think it was all that bad, but there was plenty of room for improvement. Thanks for the breakdown Charlie!
There were some entertaining parts of S1 and it was beautifully shot. As a lover of all the books (not just the Hobbit and LOTR Trilogy) I found it very disturbing that the characterization of Galadrial, Celibrimbore, Elrond, and yes , even Sauron were so very different than how the Professor had described them. Many event in the timeline were also so different that it took me by surprise often. The addition of characters not in the books was not an issue for me as much as the way cannon characters were portrayed. I suppose that having the title "Lord of The Rings" implied that they would honor JRRT's vision, I don't believe they really did that. Tolkien and his son Christopher , are no longer in this world to insist that the story is told with major adherence to the vision in the tomes. Amazon abandoned so much of the essence in Tolkien's vision that I really don't think it earns the title it has given the show. I will watch S2 and give it a shot but I am sure I will have to try and forget what I have read so as to avoid confusion which would ultimately lead to annoyance and dislike. That's just how I feel about the show.
Also, even though the creators might have said off screen that the "wizard" is Gandalf, it was basically confirmed in the final episode when he says "if in doubt, always follow your nose" which is a direct quote of Gandalf's from The Fellowship of the Ring.
There is some inconsistencies in the books on how the Dwarves got their rings, because Durin CLAIMS he didn't get them from Sauron but were given to him by Celabrimbor, but it's not clear if those were given to him by Sauron, and then to Cel and then to the Dwarves? It will be interesting to see how this adaptation attempts to answer that
If you look very closely at the tree, it looks like that moving black goo My theory is the black goo is moving. Because the rot is turning into a creature.
Personally I love the show. To be fair I didn't on my first watch, but I had super high expectations. But going back to it with my partner we both really enjoyed it. I can't wait for season 2 and I need to get better at not letting fans of hate and their own moody opinions decide what I am going to watch going forward.
Good I do the same thing I don't let the opinions of others influence me as for the first season of Rings Of Power I loved it too so did my mom and my friends can't wait to see Sauron as Annatar The Lord Of Gifts
@@kadarabdullahi yeah it looks like things are ramping up especially for the elves since they know about Sauron it's the other races we have to worry about especially the humans
overall i really enjoyed it. Sure i don't think it's perfect and i do understand a lot of the criticism, especially around character writing (mainly Galadriel), various lore inaccuracies and some unnecessary subplots (mainly the Harfoots) but i think the vitriol is unjustified and blown excessively out of proportion. I'm pretty excited for season 2, hopefully they listened to those constructive critiques. I think, as fans, we should all want this show to succeed.
I've seen a number of people ask when the show confirmed that the Stranger was Gandalf. "Confirmed"? That didn't happen as such. However, after the Stranger decided he is "good", at one point he made a remark about "follow your nose", to the proto-Hobbit companion (sorry, it's been too long and I've lost several of the names), but that was so like a line Gandalf said in the Jackson films, it seemed as conclusive as possible. There's a lot of disagreement on what the Amazon show can use and can't use, and while Gandalf is mentioned in the appendices which are supposedly available for the show, it could be direct references to Gandalf could only be made in certain cases. Or it could be that the Stranger is another one of the five Wizards that come to Middle Earth, and if that's the case, it's most likely to be one of the two blue Wizards who aren't given names in the appendices. Maybe one of the blue Wizards said this phrase about following your nose to Gandalf, and Gandalf ended up using it as well.
@@tompearce5418 I can't find my copy of Return of the King to check the appendices there. You could be right, I just don't remember. It wouldn't be atypical for this series to overwrite it if that is there.
@@tompearce5418 Thank you for the info. I don't know where my book is, unless one of my kids "borrowed" it. They're supposed to ask first, but... Anyway, thank you.
I do wonder whether we'll see Celeborn, Galadriel's husband, this season. That creeping black goo is Venom invading Middle Earth of course ... but seriously, I'm guessing it might become the Balrog.
@@emergencyawesome I think she means like when the Balrog falls into the underground lake while battling Gandalf - "a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake."
Where and when was it confirmed the stranger is Gandalf? One of the blue wizards would make more sense they could do so much more with them since we dont know their fate. Also that fortress looks more like Utumno(morgoths first stronghold) than Angband which was underground and had 3 volcanic peaks above
They can't use the name Gandalf due to copyright. And he was not supposed to be created till a couple thousand years later....so they will just make him Gandalf without ever using his name.
Maybe they were scared of those flying creatures that the nazgul had the anti-eagles basically and they didn't want to attempt to get close until the ring was destroyed. That would make a lot of sense
Thank you for not bashing the showing, Charlie! I appreciate it. The visual effects for this show are absolutely stunning. As a hard-core Tolkien fan (I’ve been continuously reading Tolkien for 24 yrs) I can’t wait for season 2, even with any flaws.
Who cares about House of the Dragon? Keep the focus on the topic and this is going to be Epic. Sauron in all his forms and might, everything else comes second to this. First season had great acting and cant wait see Khazad-Dûm become the Black Pit. ‘It was a Balrog of Morgoth, ‘of all elf-banes the most deadly, save the One who sits in the Dark Tower.’ Legolas
I literally can’t wait until this comes out! I love how slow pace it was and took its time with everything. But hope they ramp up things up this season
"They haven't been created yet." Yeah, but they have ditched the timeline and a lot of other lore, so anything is possible because they don't care about being faithful to just about anything.
I might be in the vast minority here, but I had way more fun watching Rings of Power than I did watching House of the Dragon. I didn't have fun with the GoT prequel until the last 2 or 3 episodes. I thoroughly enjoyed every single episode of RoP. Stoked for this
Sorry my friend but you are wrong about the Narya ring. The first barer of that ring is Cirdan (the only elf with a beard) and not Calebrimbor. But as we see Calebrimbors green sleeve, it is most likely that Cirdan isn't in these series.
I thought season 1 wasn't as bad as everyone's making it out to be. Things were changed just like any book to T.V., that's expected. I'm looking forward to season 2 to really see where the show is headed. How they are going to bring the book to life. I've read the books more then twice, I understand the feelings people had but when setting the foundation to a book onto T.V. isn't easy which is why alot of these types fail. If season 2 continues to go in their own direction I may change my mind, but as of now, I'm on board.
I'm a little conflicted and confused, because towards the end of his life, Tolkien was moving away from the Idea that orcs were once elves, so I don't know how to feel.
It would be more fitting if Sauron wasn't dispersed into a mindless wraith after the events of Return of the King but remained fully conscious, able to watch the Fourth Age unfold but knowing that he'd never have the strength to influence events again.
It's made pretty clear it is Gandalf in the final episode when he says "if in doubt, always follow your nose" which is a direct quote of his from The Fellowship of the Ring.
Love the breakdown! I watch your breakdowns for Marvel, Star Wars, HotD, this and any others I need to catch. Always great stuff. But one thing I noticed at the end of this one, Angbad is actually Angband*. That's an easy mistake to make. And I actually think it's not Angband, but rather Melkor's (Morgoth) original stronghold of Utumno from the ancient days of Arda, or it could possibly be some beginnings of Mordor. I could be wrong about it not being Angband though. I'm excited to find out. Also I think the Stranger is just one of the blue wizards, not necessarily Gandalf. I don't remember it being for sure confirmed in the show that it was indeed Gandalf, although from appearance it does seem like it could be him, but the way he acted seemed like he was a different blue wizard. But you're right, all the blue wizards actually came later in the timeline, during the Third Age. Thanks again for the awesome breakdown!
The Eagles would have had to fight their way to Mount Doom fighting fell beasts, Nazgûl ETC ETC and alerted Sauron. Who is not a dumb critter and he may have been alerted to the rings potential destruction and his flawed thinking that one one is immune to the rings influence. Esp. if they headed straight to Mt Doom.
This season is going to be a big one for this series... This show had it's high points too and I think I'm still interested in continuing to watch. Despite some people's strange campaign to convince others not to enjoy something for some reason lol
the worst part is they call themselves "fans" but I can't imagine calling myself a fan of something I wish would fail. Feels like hate for the sake of hate. Criticism is fair, expectable and warranted but there's a difference between criticism and straight up hate.
@@mygetawayart yeah... Definitely true... It's seemingly a bizarre for fans... But it kind of makes sense when you think about it. Because the core of many of their complaints, a lot of their criticism is rooted in hate if we are being totally honest
@casual_user4388 I agree with what you say, but i wasn't trying to gatekeep anyone. I'm saying that all of us, as fans, should root for this show to be great. What i criticize is how so many fans aren't even remotely willing to do that and instead organize genuine hate campaigns to tank it before the new season is even released. I don't understand how can anyone HONESTLY say the trailer is worth THAT many dislikes, it's a good trailer and shows a lot of promise. There's a difference between fair criticism (which definitely exists) and just pure hate. You can't honestly stand there and tell me there isn't a huge contingent of "fans" who hate the show and wish it would fail.
Gandalf doesn't (and won't) exist in the Second Age for the Rings of Power - The Stranger is one of the Blue Wizards as the story continues with the Easterlings and Southrons. We will probably also discover the Second of the Blue Wizards as well.
If it's not Gandalf then the writers are actively being dishonest. He says the exact same thing Gandalf says to Pippin (when in doubt, always follow your nose). They've proven they don't care about manipulating the timeline.
@@MissMillsonxxYou talked about "writers" but you also made clear that you only saw the movies and didn't read any of the books. ... that quote could Gandalf had from one of the two blue wizards. As a reminder of the wisedom of his friend.
@@MaxJ. I read the hobbit, fellowship, and two towers. Be for real though, 99% of people recognize that as a Gandalf quote and the dude is surrounded by hobbit forefathers and wears grey. Also does the thing with the moth. You're being pedantic.
@@MissMillsonxx Yes you are absolutely right on that. From commercial perspective and for the fans of the movies, it would be great. And a lot of things makes it seems like it is Gandalf. Although he would be called Mithrandir. You also said "hobbit forefathers" which are called Harfoots. So these writers could've done the same thing with this "stranger", yes they made up Halbrand, but now they show us Annatar. Sow they really want to please the fans of the lore as well. Yes they are messing with the timelines but Mithrandir wasn't there when Annatar was handing out the rings. Besides his ring of fire Ayra was firstly worn by Kirin (in the series it will be Calebrimbor I guess), so we shall see how this character plays out. But be honest it would be nice if they show us in these series one (or two) of the blue wizards
The eagles didn’t take the ring to Mordor because they were servants of Manwe. They are like the Istari. After the breaking of Beleriand the Valar decided they would no longer interfere directly in Middle Earth. They have passed the torch to the peoples of middle earth. The eagles may even be Maiar. Either way, they are beholden to Manwe- just like the Istari. The eagles abstained from interference other than watching and reporting following the 1st age. The Istari were explicitly forbidden to challenge Sauron directly by Manwe. So why assume the eagles can solve the problems of Middle Earth? Tolkien is exceedingly consistent in this regard. He tells us explicitly that the Valar have withdrawn from Middle Earth They did not want direct interference into middle earth ever again. You might as well ask why the Valar or Eru himself didn’t just come down from in high and flick Sauron off his perch. If you understand what the eagles are, this question doesn’t get asked.
I actually loved season 1... some great homages to fans of the movies, but some new threads as well! I thought the Sauron twist in the finale was dope. Looking forward to your breakdowns Charles.
Emergency Awesome I am looking forward to season 2! I do we see Galadriel’s Husband, Celeborn, (with the 2nd age it leaves a lot of open interpretation, and I also feel that the wizard will be. Blue wizards such as Alatar & Palladio. As we know little of them in the 3rd age! As always, thanks Charlie. You are appreciated!
The male elves hairs still short! Only Sauron's hair is long! Please make the male elves sexy with long hair and equal amount of fighting alongside Galadriel too!
Why do we not want overlap?? Overlap them all, all these series should be coming out consistently...House of the Dragon, the boys, rings of power, peacemaker, etc. etc. etc. There is so much time in-between these seasons it's hard to stay Interested. Don't get me wrong, I want and will watch them all, but I will wait till they all play then binge them back to back...then 2yrs from now we will get fallout season 2 and probably house of dragons season 3...there is only 8 to 10 episodes per season, they should release every June or August every year, they should be filming next years season as they are releasing this year's season.m, but now they wait to see if it made them enough money, then green light or cancel the next season of the series. It's infuriating!!
