LORD OF THE RINGS : THE RETURN OF THE KING *FIRST TIME WATCHING* (PART 3/3) 

I'd give it a slight nudge over Star Wars OT and Indiana Jones, and a good bit better than the Pirates, and Back to the Future tril's, which round out my top 5.

Movies period. Imo all 3 is one giant movie

@Hautterrien Because she chose to become mortal, and the fate of men is to leave the world and to go "somewhere else" (the Great Beyond). When she died she reunited with Aragorn in the other world. At last Frodo, Bilbo and Sam died too, but like Aragorn did, according to their own desire. Tolkien was a believer, and in his world death is seen (by immortals like Elves) as a "gift" to escape from the endless wheel of time that Elves, on the contrary, can't escape from and that wears them down.

@Hautterrien It's not written in the book, but in the letters and you can guess it from the Silmarillion, where it is said that death is the "gift" (by Elves' pov) of Eru to Men and that not even the Valar can change that.

@Hautterrien Earendil was not a Man: he was the son of Tuor (a Man) and Idril (an elf-woman), so he was a half-elf and he could choose. His wife Elwing was the grand-daughter of Beren and Luthien, daughter of Dior the half-elf and Nimloth (an elf-woman), so she too could choose. Elrond and Elros could (and should) choose, and so could Arwen, Elladan and Elrohir. But Men couldn't. Valar could resuscitate temporarily mortals (at first Tolkien had decided men waited for a while in the Halls of Mandos before they went into the Great Beyond) and they did so for Beren. But they couldn't delete the "gift" for good.

If I remember right Legolas build his own ship to sail west with, and when we was done he invited Gimli to come with him which Gimli did. I like these kinds of endings. After the ring got destroyed they all more or less went their own way, sure they got to meet each other a couple of times but way less than you'd probably expect they would. But at the end of their story (life) they reunite once again to close their final chapter together.

Merry and Pippin in their old age made the trip to Gondor once again stopping first in Rohan, they both died in Gondor and were buried there with honors.

It is not that Frodo was wounded and met with darkness. He was never able to destroy the Ring. It defeated him, conquered his will and soul. That is why he could not stay with this feeling. He never fulfilled his task - and could only go on the last ship to forget everything.

@@KRONUS1ify The scar that morgul blade left in him had a role as well. Made him even more vulnerable. In the end what you said is very much like I said, minus the wound.

And as to his question of how he could leave Sam. As long as Frodo lived in the Shire, Sam would never really be free to live his own life. Years later he still felt obligated to watch over him, and Sam needed to be able to able to devote himself wholly to his wife and kids. It was a cruel kindness to Sam for Frodo to leave.

And in that abyss, he encountered the nameless ones. Creatures as old as Sauron but far more vile. It's likely the only way Gandalf made it out of those tunnels is by pursuing and then killing Durin's Bane. Without a creature that already knew how to maneuver those tunnels, Gandolf would certainly have perished. In the books, Gandolf even refuses to speak of the evil he encountered down there.

You can't noticed too easily in the movie but Shelob is so old and diseased that most of her eyes are useless, so when Sam blinds her he is effectively killing her, she won't be able to hunt or catch prey easily anymore.

One of my favorite passages from the book, I've copied it myself to several LOTR reaction videos. :) It's great how the movie does it justice with the part about Theoden being ever before the rest of his men, you can clearly see no one is able to overtake him.

Then after Theorem dies you get another beautiful passage describing Eomer. [Éomer] let blow the horns to rally all men to his banner that could come thither; for he thought to make a great shield-wall at the last, and stand, and fight there on foot till all fell, and do deeds of song on the fields of Pelennor, though no man should be left in the West to remember the last King of the Mark. So he rode to a green hillock and there set his banner, and the White Horse ran rippling in the wind. Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing. To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking: Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall! These staves he spoke, yet he laughed as he said them. For once more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people. And lo! even as he laughed at despair he looked out again on the black ships, and he lifted up his sword to defy them.

The text is so medium specific it's impossible to adapt. It's a miracle Jackson got as close to the feeling as he does with some of these scenes.

I also like the bit when Éomer sees his sister lying there after killing the Witch-king “Then suddenly he beheld his sister Éowyn as she lay, and he knew her. He stood a moment as a man who is pierced in the midst of a cry by an arrow through the heart; and then his face went deathly white; and a cold fury rose in him, so that all speech failed him for a while. A fey mood took him. 'Éowyn, Éowyn!' he cried at last: 'Éowyn, how come you here? What madness or devilry is this? Death, death, death! Death take us all!' Then without taking counsel or waiting for the approach of the men of the City, he spurred headlong back to the front of the great host, and blew a horn, and cried aloud for the onset. Over the field rang his clear voice calling: 'Death! Ride, ride to ruin and the world's ending!' And with that the host began to move. But the Rohirrim sang no more. Death they cried with one voice loud and terrible, and gathering speed like a great tide their battle swept about their fallen king and passed, roaring away southwards.”

Actually, the second one is not i the book and the first there is but not so emotionally charged. In the book only Aragorn bows to Frodo and Sam, and not during coronation, but during the celebration after the Battle, so it's not so a "public" demonstration.

@@Laurelin70 I think that addition is something of which Tolkien would have approved (and perhaps wished he wrote himself). On a related note, Peter Jackson made a few necessary changes from the books (including removing the "Scouring of the Shire" - a plot point which was effective in the book, showing us how the 4 hobbits had grown, and also proving that hobbits in general are able to fight for their freedom and win, but which would have made an already long film ending even longer), plus a couple questionable ones (I mean, I get why he had Faramir initially follow in Boromir's path, as it does add a lot of tension and a really cool scene with the Nazgûl riding the fell beast, and Frodo just holding the ring out...but in the canon, Faramir is not like his father and brother, and was never going to make their mistakes), *but the way he adapted Aragorn's character is perhaps the best change he made.* In the books, Aragorn never denied his heritage, nor had he expressed any reluctance to take up the kingship of Gondor if possible - he was already someone who was confident in his abilities, and was able to step into the role of leader without second-guessing himself. In the movies though, he had an actual character arc, going from someone who was ashamed of his heritage as the descendent of one who refused to destroy the ring, and afraid of being given power lest that weakness result in the destruction of Middle-Earth, and yet as he went forward on the quest with Frodo, leading the Fellowship after Gandalf died, then helping to lead the Rohirrim in battle before finally claiming the mantle of king and getting the ghosts to fight on his side, he grew into his role as a leader, and began to see that he'd be a good king. I think that is actually an improvement on the source material, which is pretty high praise given how great Tolkien's writings are.

In the books is Eomer who saw Theoden fall in the battlefield and reunite all is men in a circle planting all the rohirrim banners and hold the wave of enemies...he says that speech and scream Death

Well, and an enemy who doesn't fear death? Terrifying!

After finally waking from so long being under Saruman's spell, Théoden is understandably given to pessimism, from learning of the recent death of his son Théodred (the funeral at which Éowyn sings that beautiful dirge) and speaking to Gandalf of how low his house has become, to his decision to fly to Helm's Deep instead of heeding Aragorn's advice to stand and fight, during which siege he almost fell to despair, until Aragorn roused him out of it. Now he stands off the right flank of a superior force, of many tens of thousands of orcs, Haradrim and Easterlings (estimates have ranged from 75,000 to over 600,000), challenging it with a cavalry of only 6,000 spears. He knows that even given the advantage of charging cavalry over a walking infantry, it is still not enough to overcome a 10 to 1 (much less a 100 to 1) difference. He certainly knows his relatively small force cannot carry the day, and that it will take a miracle even to fight through the lines and join with the besieged defenders of the city. And yet, despite whatever struggles within his own mind, despite the vast sea of enemies filling the Pelennor before him, this great king knows this charge is the only thing he can do in service of good over evil, and so he will see it done. So he gives his battle cry, lends courage to his Rohirrim, leads the charge into battle at the head of his force, and fights like one possessed. Gone are the soft whisperings in a darkened hall by one with the nickname 'wormtongue' speaking to him of reeking bowers, and a once-proud kingdom fallen into disrepute. Now he is a king of old, mighty and determined, hurling tons of steel into the flank of the enemy with all the strength that sinew of horses and men can wield. And in the end, the king lies upon that field, crushed under his horse, the light slowly fading from his eyes, but with a light in his heart he has not felt in years. "I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company, I shall not now feel ashamed." Well done, Théoden king. Well done.

This was my biggest angry moment about things they changed because the swords coming from the barrow is so important and they skipped it

Even worse, due to the structure of the book (first half from the perspective of the rest of the fellowship, second half with Frodo and Sam), you don’t find out what happened to them until a bit over halfway through RotK. When the mouth of sauron is taunting them at the black gate, you still have no idea what happened to Frodo after being captured by the orcs.

@@somethingclever5 thats right! I remember that. Man, I only read through the entire trilogy once - the summer before Fellowship came out. I remember spending like a whole weekend in my room, not eating or stopping because it was so intense that you didn't know what happened to Frodo.

I think, in the director’s commentary they said the older child is his and the younger one is the kid of the actress who plays his wife.

Actually the girl he hug its his daughter, was a surprise. He havent seen her for a time so the reaction was real. Also de other child is the actress son.

You got the quote dead RIGHT, friend. It was Iorlas who said it, who worked in the Houses of healing where Eowyn and Merry were taken, and saw Aragorn come to heal them. She's not featured in the movie, alas... EXCEPT... When they're panning across the crowd scene at Aragorn's coronation, there's this one young sweet face girl they focus on briefly. In my heart I know that is Iorlas!

And there's this whole "conspiracy" this is really just a myth story about defeating Sauron and none of the details are sure to be correct 😂 There are mentions that the actual LOTR books are a so-called Red Book of Westmarch, which is supposed to be the in-world manuscript of LOTR, kinda like a chronicle book. However it was rewritten at least once, so there's no guarantee stuff like specific dialogues ever happened as per authors' creative adaptations. So in this view, LOTR is just a story within the world of Middle-Earth, and since the world of Middle-Earth has had its elves leave and dwarves dwindle and Valinor become inaccessible along with magic... it might actually be intended as story from the forgotten history of our own world 😀 Food for thought

But the Oliphaunts would have done literally nothing to the city walls… he should have either retreated into the city and fought off the siege, or, at least tried to Pincer from multiple angles. A head on charge is just tactically terrible

The dead army didn't fought in the pelenor fields, in the book i say.

@@DanielConwayRacing Theoden didn’t head on charge em because he wanted to fight then straight up. He wanted to get behind them. Yes going for a pincer is a good option. However, it takes mass amounts of manoeuvring, orders, planning, having units split from command - also doing such in visual sight of the enemy doesn’t work either as they just counter by, moving out to their flanks too and now your facing two smaller lines of oliphants against your smaller groups. Plus, Theoden is having to order this mid battle. Most charges or even pincer manoeuvres are set up ahead of time with everyone knowing what to do, where to go and who to stay with; you also have set squadrons, clear leadership within them and fresh horses. This is a charge of order during the charge. In such occasions all previous things above are absolutely gone. Men will be scattered as such you essentially can’t rally them back into a fixed formation easily, you have to get them as fast as you can; your leadership may be wounded, dead or missing, as such complex tasks are an issue to get ordered and then executed - note you don’t also have time to delay such, your working off a minute clock. If your order will take 20 minutes to think up, task and execute, your going to be overrun. Plus your also now dealing with wounded and fatigued fighters, and also blown horses. Getting them to preform complex order will now take even more time. So. In situations like this. What Theoden does actually is the best solution. Rally as many men as possible around you into a new line. Attack straight ahead to meet the enemy - which will also keep them focused on you and not attempting to make their own manoeuvres. Yes people are going to die and get hit, but many many more will break through into the rear and can begin attacking. Casualties in war are beyond inevitable and yes commanders will always try to come up with the best actions to keep as many men from ending up wounded or dead. However, when in the midst of battle and such plans are having to be made in split decision timing, such worry’s have to be forced into secondary positions, with primary ones being how to execute a simple order that can be quickly understood and acted upon to defeat our foe in as short a time as possible. Yes this order may end up costing several more lives than if it had been planned out meticulously. However, it’s likely also the best order in the situation that can be resolved in easy seconds and acted upon by men already in combat.

@@duxatrox7693 In the movies Galadriel gave them the daggers but if I remember right from the books it's possible you are correct. I've only listened to the books once but I just started reading The Hobbit before I move on to LOTR. I retain info better through reading instead of listening.

@@toodlescae The daggers were forged in Arnor and given to the hobbits by Tom Bombadil when he saves them from the Barrowdown Wights. and there is a great quote "So passed the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-kingdom when the Dúnedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will.’

Pitty they didnt explain that part in the movie about the magic dagger. Im so pissed about that.

I thought "men" here referred to the race of men (humans) not gender. I was always confused how Eowyn was able to kill this powerful magical being just because she's a woman. Just seems like there is no way any ordinary mortal could ever kill them using ordinary mortal means. It's hell of a flaw if men can't kill them but women and hobbits can lol. Makes more sense if it's a magical dagger breaking the spell.

This story is just so fucking pure, even an apendix of the rest of the lives of the members of the fellowship made this grown ass, bald, bearded, tattooed biker tear up. And i will continue to do this now after reading the books watching the movie 20 times and will for the next 200. It will forever live in my heart and i cant wait to share it with my youngest siblings, nieces and nephews and, hopefully some day, my own children.

Maybe 2000 years from now they are still reading these books. 💪🏻 Makes you think, wow.

Also, Sam and Rosie had 13 Kids, and Pippins son married the oldest daughter, if I remember correctly :)

I also cry when Sam and Frodo just destroyed the ring, thinking they were going to die from the fire of Mount Doom, sharing there dreams and purest thoughts. Literally the definition of true friendship.

I didn't like the scene. LOTR will never be surpassed as a trilogy. It is sacred to me. But that scene was a misstep. Glad it was removed from the final edit (they're watching the extended version). The scene wasn't true, wasn't genuine, and it's about an important point. Gandalf's little finger will break this witch king.
