Thank you Lord Xerus! I just recently got back into the SCA and need to make me some armor. Definitely safety is the first priority. I'm a metal artist and when I'm making jewelry comfort in my design work is so important. You reminded me just how important that will be in building my armor.
OMG...like me with rivets, I'm so intimidated. I was feeling you! Finally a video that shows the struggles for such simple things....want a chin strap that is comfortable/safe/functional...take a few days to think on that my friend! "Geez fellas, might not get my armor padded before the next practice, but I'll try" lol. As the armor wears, it's like "one rivet left? It'll hold. No rivet left? Use some parachord for now. Leather strap broke? Eh, just duck tape it. Then it holds and stays that way for the next 3 months while you contemplate if the struggle to fix it is worth it lol.
These suspension system is decent, but as you say the shortcoming is a failure of the lacing. The can be addressed by placing the foam into the crown of the helm as the second line of defense so you head doesn't go clunk into the steel. I did this recently for a new fighter and the results were satisfactory.
Sir, might I suggest a small corded or cordless drill and some small drill bits for removing pesky rivets.... Save the grinding and your amazing leather works.
Wouldn’t you know it, I’ve tried that and I have a heck of a time keeping the bit from skittering all over the place. I managed to get a drill through a Chicago screw but the darn thing still wouldn’t give up the ghost.
@@LordXerus lol ya sometimes grinding a flat surface and pre drilling with a smallest bit. I'm sure you've heard this a hundred times now though.... It was alot of fun watching your video today. I laughed real good.
This is the first of your videos I've seen. This was hilarious. Your rant about the universe being a bully and having nothing better to do, killed me. I think every craftsman has had that same rant.
I shared your video with people in the Stronghold of Warriors Gate. One guy said you're like an Evil Overlord who's lost his dungeon to some heros and now he's trying to get back on top, but has to do everything himself cause all his minions are gone.
That’s amazing! That sure does sound like me! Thanks for the support! Be sure to watch sone of my other videos, I think you’ll enjoy them, particularly this one. Spent a solid four months making it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sGxAVup7GfM.html
Oh, man, if only... Little known fact, the blue one known as "Grover" today is an ancient being known as "Graver" as in, he put his enemies in their graves. I mean, look at this guy... he does not @#%& around! www.buzzfeed.com/alivelez/watch-grover-star-in-sesame-streets-perfect-parody-of-game-o?sub=0_5430462#5430462
That certainly would have been a lot easier! Aside from not liking that the foam would be stuck to the leather, (a weird OCD thing on my part,) I also wanted to use the vacated hole to attach an avantail in the future.
@@LordXerus it would not stick if cling wrap was involved.. lol but I see what you mean. I've thought about the avantails, but to me it adds a lot more weight when I like using a dog collar for neck support.
@@LordXerus My thought would be to pull the string and pull the leather back, then reinstall the string so you get the best of both worlds - a suspension liner with foam backup. At least, that's what I'm planning to do when my new bascinet gets here. :-)
I believe at the time it was EVA closed-cell foam. It is very commonly used as helmet padding in the SCA. I currently use a combination of Shocktec foam and gel.
At the time when I made this video, I was given very firm advice by my local marshal to switch to foam. I had a padded coif and a suspension liner. (The coif may have been too sparsely padded to be effective.) However, since then, there have been times when, after a practice, I've been subject to headaches. You may be on to something. However, the Marshal's handbook requires .5 inches of closed cell foam padding. I don't know if a padded coif would meet that requirement on its own. I do rather regret removing the suspension liner. I could have kept it and used foam as a backup in case it failed. Given my experience, what I may do going forward is invest in some ballistic foam that is supposed to have some motion cancelling properties. If I do, I'll be sure to report on the results.
Lord Xerus granted I only do fencing and cut and thrust with the sca. I do however do a lot with Eva foam I always found it lets a lot of energy through those headaches are a huge indicator that your brain is getting shaken be careful and hopefully you get better results with the new foam .
@@LordXerus And I subscribed, thanks for the video. I purchased a custom venatori helmet from an Ebay armorsmith seller. Just checking how they make the inside of medieval helmets.
