TRANSCRIPT:
Ravaged by a nuclear world war in 2013, Earth has become a bleak and desolate world. What was left of the human population was forced underground to avoid the harsh, nuclear winters, but the worst had yet to come.
Stewing in radiation for three decades, Moscow began to breed radiated atrocities; pterodactyl-like demons, snout-faced mutants, and humanoid monstrosities now stalked the surface. Luckily for Moscow, it was also the home to an extensive metro system that doubled as the largest underground shelter on the planet. Survivors flocked to these underground stations, a new safe-haven for the dwindling human population, but survival was not easy.
Dubbed the Last Refuge, the survivors not only had to piece back together their lives, but society, law, and government as well. Infighting became frequent as the Metro stations became their own independent states, giving rise to factions that almost always teetered on the brink of war. But from the nuclear ashes rose a greater threat - a race of sentient creatures descended from surface-dwelling humans known as The Dark Ones. Now it's up to Artyom, a newly minted Ranger of the Order, to protect the Metro and solve the mystery of the Dark Ones.

By the end of the game I ended up have like 300 worth of high-end ammo. Towards the last mission is ended up using that ammo because I figured I wasn't going to use it

TrueChaoSclx Yes there is a second book called 2034, However it doesn't follow the story of the Artyom we know, It has another person names Artyom (Ironically) as the main character. Same name different person.

kainniak1 I didnt spend my military ammo much though. I had over 600 military grade rounds until that mission, when I ran out of all my other shit and had to use it. I should have bought dirty ammo before moving on, I usually just kept about 150 rifle, 100 pistol, and 50 shot gun. That level uses more ammo than most, I wasnt prepared. Had to dip into my reserves of military ammo

Yes I know, I've played Metro 2033(the game). However the "Nuke" ending is the canon one, because that's what happens in the 2033 book. Artyom learns the truth about the Dark Ones just before the missile is launched but is unable to stop it.

А - A Р - R Т - T Ё - YO М - M Cyrillic is fairly easy to learn. To be fair, reading Russian is easier to learn than English for non-natives of both. Letters have distinct sounds in Russian. Even the exceptions follow rules. It is not like English that it depends from word to word.

That was a great detail in this, yes... they never meant harm, but their natural way of communicating just happened to drive most humans to madness. Heh. It's almost a "first encounter gone wrong" scenario, just dumped into a post-apocalyptic setting. As an even more brilliant detail, the monster attacks that always seemed to come before the Dark Ones' arrival were basically just because the monsters were _also_ driven to a frenzy by the Dark Ones' telepathy.

There are two different endings in 2033, one is that you save the dark ones, and the other is that you nuke them. It depends on what you do. In Metro Last Light, it is assumed that you went the "nuke" route. I am not sure about the books though.

Sorry for necro-commenting, but, please, no! While the gameplay was quite advanced for the time, the lore is more of a 'pulp fiction' sort, and is severely underdeveloped. Hopefully the new instalment in the series is going to improve that.

I haven't read the books, but the different theories of the game characters are that they either mutated from humans after the bombings, were artificially created as soldiers before the war or were put into place by some higher power

fart on the way Most of Metro 203* story is nicely covered in a thick cloud of mystery. Perhaps this is why it's so interesting a story. Cause we SEE things, and all we get to understand them are opinions and speculations. Very little is confirmed scientific fact. Well supernatural powers are exactly what lead me to think they're aliens. Look at any other mutant in the universe, other than "the anomaly" they are just animals, using simple Earth biology as weapons. Dark Ones are so unlike other mutants in they're biology and abilities, almost as if those weren't evolved with Earth environment, the top of the Earth mutated food chain are just bigger badder more dumber and more brutal animals, not intelligent humanoids.

Its not like they have bigger claws or sharper teeth they are completely different with their abilities from the aggressive mutants and thats the big next step. But they remind me on aliens too. The book was so much better than the game. The book has very few mutants and monsters and is rather about the journey and the atmosphere, while the game, well... monsters abound and it just ruins it. For anybody who hasn't picked up either, I'd advise going with the book, it's much more interesting and has more in-depth Metro awesomeness in it.

Well the game is an action game and they're trying to put as much fighting in it as they possibly can. But also tell a good story. So that's what they did. And I had no idea they had a book. I'm off to go read it now :D

kidlink4OoT well, the book came first AFAIK. I only bought the game because I liked the book and it was on sale. I think the game is good, it's just that they changed the atmosphere and story to be an action game (as you said) and that way, they lost a lot of what Metro 2033 was about.

There's only so much you can do to a book or a game. Not everything can be the same. The book is based on what you imagine it to be. The game is the book but with pictures. Those pictures might not be how you imaged it, so that might be why you don't like it as much. Besides the THQ Team was going bankrupt at the time so they probably tried to rush it out the door as best they could.

kidlink4OoT I fully agree that there has to be a difference - it's a different medium. I also agree that you can't have the story 100% because of that, so I'm OK with that. My issue was that it focused on something different than the book and the story had so many changes by the time you passed the third station, I just couldn't continue on, it seemed like a different story with a different main character to me. In result, as somebody who bought the game because of liking the book I felt cheated, this isn't the Metro 2033 I read, it's just an action game, which by coincidence has the same names for characters and very similar surroundings. I'm OK with some slight story changes, but I think they went way too far with this one. At least that's how I felt. Still, not saying it's a bad game, I'm sure many people like it and many would disagree with me.

Sometimes I hate it when people take a book and turn it in to a movie or a game, like the Percy Jackson movie for instance. And It's good to have an opinion about something. I see what you mean too. There are a lot of changes from the book and the Game. And I don't disagree with you at all. :P

Agreed I still love the plot and that game was a shooter that kept me interested more than any other shooter only because of the great plot.
