I’ve loved her since first hearing her so long ago......she is one of few , for me, is close...so very close, to an angel with music and words....my life has been blessed for this awareness. 😇
Danke für diesen mystischen zauberhaften Song !!! Fantastische Stimme - unglaublich schöne Bilder - exzellente iinstrumentale Begleitung ! Einfach zum Träumen !!! Ein Seelentröster !
I love this poem of Saint John of the Cross! But the music and the voice of Loreena McKennitt make it such a delight! I listen to this song every time I am feeling overwhelmed and it always helps me feel better afterwards. Thank you for this gift!
@marianamaus,thank you for explaining where this poem came from, I read up on it ,he John of St Matthias adopted the name when he entered the Carmelite Order, the poem narrates the journey of the soul from its bodily home to the union with God and represents the hardships and difficulties of life that we all have to go through. No wonder it makes me cry when I hear Loreena McKennitt singing her version of this poem.
St. John of The Cross. My favourite Roman Catholic saint. I’m NOT RC. His story, his struggle, in the RC church and in his faith is inspiring. Imprisoned by his own order for his faith beliefs. That right there, holding on to his faith in the face of persecution from his own, that is the mark of a true Saint. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
I want this song played at my funeral too. Ironically, I always played this song for my twins for naptimes and they always fell asleep without any fussing.
Upon a darkened night The flame of love was burning in my breast And by a lantern bright I fled my house while all in quiet rest Shrouded by the night And by the secret stair I quickly fled The veil concealed my eyes While all within lay quiet as the dead Oh night thou was my guide Of night more loving than the rising sun Oh night that joined the lover To the beloved one Transforming each of them into the other Upon that misty night In secrecy, beyond such mortal sight Without a guide or light Than that which burned so deeply in my heart That fire t'was led me on And shone more bright than of the midday sun To where he waited still It was a place where no one else could come Oh night thou was my guide Of night more loving than the rising sun Oh night that joined…
Loreena has changed the words of Saint John of the Cross's poem to remove a reference to all souls being feminine to God, males also. The original uses "her Beloved" when referring to St. John's love for God. But...apart from that one quibble, Loreena is absolutely fantastic. I think even Jesus Christ himself must be one of her biggest fans.
@@vrindavanam741 (continuation of the verses) ... it was a place where no one else could come Within my pounding heart Which kept itself entirely for him He fell into his sleep Beneath the cedars all my love I gave From o'er the fortress walls The wind would brush his hair against his brow And with its smoothest hand Caressed my every sense it would allow Oh night thou was my guide Oh night more bright than the rising sun Oh night who joined the lover to the beloved one transformimg each of them into the other I lost myself to him and laid my face upon my lover's breast and care and grief grew dim as in the morning mist became the light There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair there they dimmed amongst the lilies fair there they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
A poem about a journey of the soul to mystical union with God, by the 16th century Spanish Roman Catholic mystic St John of the Cross, set to music by Lorena McKennitt.
How I became aware of L.M. I watched a documentary on BBC of her going to different countries in search of these manuscripts and setting them to music. I think it was in the late 90's I've often wondered why it was never shown again. I feel fortunate to have seen it at all. I would have crossed path with her regardless as Art Bell later became a huge fan of her. I was jealous when he bragged about going to see her in concert...
@@reedasrealms3320 Both Celtic SingerSongwriters and Producers are Magnificent... Don't think we should be Ranking Them, they're both Exceptional and providing us with INCREDIBLE Compositions that Inspire us. Seems that you're 'Criticizing' by suggesting ENYA is superior? WHY mention her in this way? LOREENA is a musical Leader striving to enhance our World; believe that she deserves Respect on her work. It just doesn't SEEM FAIR to knock such inspirational Artists in an effort to bring attention to another. Any Thoughts? Curious....
The most beautiful VOICE ever. The woman most sensitive on Earth. The pleasure of the SOUL. LOREENA is the name most NOBLE of the ART. GODDESS of Spirit of POETRY MUSIC. Simply THE ONE.
You are so right. As often as I hear another female voice I can't help comparing it with THIS one, and always know it's the voice of the century, what do I say, the voice of ETERNITY. Do you know SNOW or NIGHT RIDE THROUGH CAUCASUS...? Not of this world... incredible... unbelievable...
I see a lot of comments about who initially wrote the words. A lot of comments about Loreena's style and voice ( I agree with you.... absolutely beautiful!) But I am not sure any of you whose comments have understood what it means to actually face your own "dark night of the soul". My wife of 35 years died in 2007, coming up on 13 years now. I was in a bad limbo for several years. Then I had to decide, on my own dark night of the soul, would I live in the past, or let go and choose the future. Lots of challenges in the future, but I am still here and I have a new love. The past is past. Memories are one thing, life is another. Have to make a choice. I chose life.
Dear Robert, I know exactly what you are talking about. I lost my soulmate 5 1/2 years ago, and for quite a while, the world went on without me. There comes a point where you realise you are still part of life and you still have a purpose, and only when you decide to embrace that, will you see it unfold. All the best to you!
Thank you, Ginevra Corvino, for creating such a beautiful visual rendering to accompany one of Loreena McKennitt’s most beautiful songs. We are uplifted by both, but together they are more than the sum of their parts, adding yet more beauty to the human experience. Such moments as these are cherished and give hope for a greater life.
I found Loreena by accident around 11 years ago. So glad I did - being of Celtic background - just sank my soul and spirit into her creativity and brilliance of her interpretation of Celtic themes and stories. Sooooooo beautiful.
Good lord is Loreena talented. Just incredibly beautiful music. Just pure brilliance. She is the type of musician I can look up to and respect. Pure emotion placed into every note sung. Strait up perfection.
if I had only one piece of music to listen to always, it would be this one. After years of listening to this, it never fails to move me deeply on so many levels.
Loreena's music is steeped in swooning melodic twists yet historical, almost like reminiscent dreams that we recant as we Explore Them... Listening to her perform or capture your mind into her DEEP EXOTIC WORLD seems similar to an enriching, #enlightening Nap... you FEEL AWAKENED or rather NOTIFIED that HER WORLD is SO DAMN SPECIAL... it's Extremely HARD To STOP or LEAVE... it's hard to turn off! #seriously Her Music's ADDICTING!!! #addicting #exotic #seductive [too]
LOREENA is more than an illustrious character of the music. LOREENA is a creative being of the best and highest feelings of the human soul. LOREENA is an absolutely sublime being in your vision of feelings. LOREENA is the best music, voice, words, MAGIC interpretation, etc.etc. WHO HEARS LOREENA, GIVE FOR LOST ALL THE TIME BACK AND TRAVELS TO ANOTHER WORLD. A UNIQUE WORLD. THE WORLD OF THIS GODDESS.
I heard this song a few months ago for the first time but never payed much attention to it. Then on a night I can't sleep listened and saw the date it was posted. In September on the 25th 2011 I had a heart attack. I was out of danger on the 26th of that year, so you might say this has a special meaning to me as that was my "Dark Night of the Soul" . Thank you for posting this.
that was the last song my loving mother heard a few hours before she passed away.a month ago...loreena was her favorite..i hope she listened because she had already had began her dark night of her soul....tears come in my eyes every time i isten to it...thank you loreena for making her life beautiful...
Music is the eternal reverberations of the universe. Your mother will certainly hear the universe with beauty we cannot understand in this world. But I have to believe this song gives us a glimpse, and if true, we have nothing to fear, only hope for. Condolences.
Tem coisas em nossas vidas que nem a razão explica, são estas coisas que só a alma entende, o amor abstrato, ausente do toque, místico somente pela razão de ser! Coisas de Deus!
Loreena is the most complete woman. Nobody did better. Only a ANGEL like her can reach the PERFECTION, the INSUPERABLE. LOREENA is IMMORTAL. She belongs to the PARADISE.LOREENA is Celestial Muse. She is the music QUEEN, the GODDESS of human heart. The GODDESS of sensitivity. LOREENA forever, for the eternity.Ever and ever.
@@deniseedwards3100 Oh no, this overwhelming song is much older, it's from her album MASK AND THE MIRROR, should have been edited in 1994 if I remember well. 😉
What a beautiful voice and a particularly poignant song and words in these very troubling times. Oh for a walk with God and pray for an end to this awful virus. God be with you friends.
I don´t have words because I'ts a sense, a way of feel, I'm fall in love wiht this son, from long time ago and forever, I hope it, It means I'm still alive. Maravillosa Loreena Dios te bendiga
Hiraeth: A homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past. This is a real thing, and this song brings it out.
I know exactly how you feel on both counts. “Star friendship.- We were friends and have become estranged. But this was right, and we do not want to conceal and obscure it from ourselves as if we had reason to feel ashamed. We are two ships each of which has its goal and course; our paths may cross and we may celebrate a feast together, as we did-and then the good ships rested so quietly in one harbor and one sunshine that it may have looked as if they had reached their goal and as if they had one goal. But then the almighty force of our tasks drove us apart again into different seas and sunny zones, and perhaps we shall never see one another again,-perhaps we shall meet again but fail to recognize each other: our exposure to different seas and suns has changed us! That we have to become estranged is the law above us: by the same token we should also become more venerable for each other! And thus the memory of our former friendship should become more sacred! There is probably a tremendous but invisible stellar orbit in which our very different ways and goals may be included as small parts of this path,-let us rise up to this thought! But our life is too short and our power of vision too small for us to be more than friends in the sense of this sublime possibility.- Let us then believe in our star friendship even if we should be compelled to be earth enemies.”
This video has some very pretty women and has some very sensitive art. With the moon and the sea, and with Loreena's beautiful music, this video is great!
I like all songs of prencis Loreena. Coming from soul to soul And music background is very perfect Collecting oriental and west music tools at the same time which are very brilliant.
God is always watching us cuz when we pass and we come we come back this life when I die 3 years ago Angels don't exist it's love stays within your heart somebody very close to me I'm far away she passed and she's in heaven and I know she watches over me light will always shine above our hearts just continue to love as an angel does the world God bless his world Amen
I found the CD album of "The Mask and the Mirror" by pure chance in a bricabrac shop in Chippenham, England in 2003 - listened to about 30 secs of each track, fell in love with her voice and bought it for STG 5 !!!
as i stated some months ago, to play her music in a house loud, to here her sweet voice echo thu out the house is so calming and tranquil. she puts you in a place that can only be experienced while playing her music and you let your mind swell of passionate days gone bye, holding on to somthing that longer exists, goodby my love
Loreena Mckennitt has her music and lyrics speak of a one who has lived in another time a very long time ago. She is the best and my idol. Beautiful music...all of it.🐎
