I often come back to LHL’s Tyoyens because it is just everything. She oozed every emotion in the most sincere way, and no that it needed, she does it with such beauty. She was very very special.
A legendary recording. Perhaps the most touching version that exists out there. Her diction, musicality and characterization are exemplary. What a stunning artist. She is missed by many.
Unforgettable. I remember well listening to the Met broadcast. Supposedly, she was so jumpy about it, she hardly slept the night before. But this was astonishing. The depth and range of colors was beyond belief.
I remember watching a broadcast from the BBC Proms in 2004 of Elgar's "The Music Makers" and thinking "who is this marvellous singer"? Well as they say, the rest is history. A genuinely great talent taken from this world far too early.
thank you so much for posting this! I first became acquainted with Ms Hunt Lieberson's gifts when I went and saw Troyens at the Met in 2003. I remember Olga Borodina canceled and there was much talk as to who they would engage to sing Didon. I was introduced to Ms Hunt Lieberson in this production and I was so sad to learn of her passing a few years after this triumph. These clips are a great service to those not fortunate enough to have heard her instrument yet.
Why has the rest of this performance not surfaced if it was a broadcast? I would love to hear the duet(although Heppner was not in good voice for these performances.)
Shattering. The first time I heard this artist on the radio, she was singing about death (Bach, I think). I said, my God, that woman has already seen death and can communicate it through music. Then the announcer said it was Lorraine, and that she had died.
I also saw her live for the first time in Les Troyens-an opera I adore. I was so stunned by her performance that it literally changed my life. The applause for her here and the end of the scene was one of the great ovations I've ever heard-I stayed in NY to see her again a few days later in the radio/matinee-is that where this is from? She was also a superb actress, a real stage creature, and created a total character through voice and acting I heard her maybe 6x more before her tragic death
