They have head sets 122firefighter so they can talk to different stations or appliances so you don't hear every one else we use radios on our 34P and you can hear a lot of things but you get used to remembering the details from different people as with a head set u can hear only that person so u have a better perspective of what's going on.
LA County is a department that still does that, a way of staying safe in that situation is by having the head set connection on the back so in case the firefighter on the tailboard falls or has to help guide the engineer they just have to talk and that allows for a safer enviornment.
@truckboy59 That's LAFD Heavy Rescue 56 and it's basically a crane. It's used to lift overturned vehicles, heavy debris and just about anything that's within the crane's operating limits.
@Coasterrider210 Thats correct. Station 8 has a squad, engine, and light force but only has two bays. That means the truck gets the left bay and the squad, engine, and pump are in the right bay. Every time station 8 gets a call its a mad scramble to get the correct appratus out the door because there's three pieces of appratus in the right bay in whatever order they returned from a call. E8 might get a call but since they're at the back the squad and pump need to be moved to let them out.
I went to a fire station in seminole down here in Florida and they said that there is a censor on the truck and when they respond, it makes the lights around there turn red
@billyfrmhill B5 from what I heard is still experimental/passed the probation stage, I think they use it as a mobile radio center now, from what I heard.
Not supposed to due to NFPA and osha think tail board riding was banned in the 70's but it kinda looked like they happened to just have to move out of the way for the other rig
Easier to communicate inside the truck. They are loud along with sirens and stuff running plus for the Engineer(driver) or the officer it offers hands free operation of the radio with out reaching for a mic.
God I really wish that they would build a new truck juts like the old days where the firefighters would actually stand on the back of the truck holding on to a bar on top of it, or bring back the old fashioned ones with the totally opened cabs, mean no roof on them, bet it was really fun driving to a cal in a complete downpour.......LOL. Also please tell me that you guys have in truck a device that when you come up to an intersection with stoplights, wqith a push of a button on the device, you can turn all 4 directions all red, so you can saflely make it through with all traffic stopped.......and when you guys have to go to the store to buy stuff for the station, do you normally just go out in one of the fire rigs or how do you do that?????
The intersection stop lights.. I've never heard of that. Most drivers just slow down and make as much noise as possible when going through it & most stations would send out the engine with its crew.
Here on the east coast we have traffic preemption devices. There is a emitter on on the vehicle and a receiver on the light, when the emitter is active, it sends signals (infrared or visual) to the receiver on the light and changes the light facing the vehicle green, and all other lights at the intersection red. Probably best bet to RU-vid "Traffic Preemption" or "Traffic Opticom" for a better explanation.
