In the southeast, you could find a lower middle class, move-in ready house 15 miles from Atlanta or Charlotte with that kind of money. Throw in another $100,000, and you could find a really nice house. When I was a kid, I always wanted to move to California, but seeing how expensive things are, I don't think I want to anymore.

With 200K you can get moble trailer home better than the homes shown.

I'm considering Palmdale or Lancaster. I'm pursuing a degree in the medical field which will allow me to work anywhere. This helps a lot because driving on that 14 freeway back and forth daily is emotional suicide!

This is absurd.. Just move up north to the Central Valley. I know that there is really nothing to do in Bakersfield, Fresno, etc.. but at least its decent. You could buy a nice house and just drive to surrounding cities (L.A, SF) every other weekend.

It will be worth $400k in 5 years. It's all relative. If you want a nice $200k house, it will stay around $200k for a long time. And Compton is not what you think it is anymore. I would take that house with the squatters in Compton for $200K in a heartbeat. The only uncertainty is what will happen when LA becomes its own state.
