Los Angeles school board votes to ban cell phones in classrooms 

Weak parents complaining like we had these devices in school when we grew up. Kids cane to school with gun racks in their trucks when I was in school. Better parenting. Spend time with your kids instead of sitting on devices ask day yourself. Make time for and with your kids instead of chasing a "bag" as if money is so important.

kids should not be given smart phones. give them an old flip phone for emergency calls and what not.

It’s so baffling that there are people opposed to this. How stupid can you possibly be to think kids should be able to use their phones at school?

Have any of you thought of 🆘 emergency button and camera in every classroom or hallways when the 🆘 button is pressed the camera is activated to the police department ?

It's a great thing, they are to much of a distraction. We didn't need them when I went to School. When an emergency came up, the Parents could call the school Office, or the School Office call the Parents.

Genuinely compromises learning so much. People who push back need to pop into a middle or high school classroom and check it out

It's common sense. Some parents and students may not like it at first, but it's like alcohol/drug withdrawal: It may feel painful at first to quit a certain habit, but it will be beneficial (even healthier) in the long run.

The thing is 10 years ago I remember teachers telling students to get off phones and most children ignore them or not care. I also remember if you had a real emergency parents went to the school to pick them up. School lock downs they didn’t want us on our phones spreading false info. So many reason.

Problem solved, The teachers holds the students phones during class.If an emergency happens their phones are less than 25 feet away.

Wont change a thing teachers are friends with them haveing relations doing drugs with these kids so not much to do they will just make a deal behind closed doors to let them use thier phones for favors

This is a good idea- very sad to see what it is doing- only thing tho is the Wi-Fi and computers need to be better quality for some activities like Kahoots which is actually easier to do on the phone

not a bad thing... kids need to concentrate.. we couldnt bring toys and games to school after 1st grade because of the distraction from the lessons.. add in the fact UFT has basically banned parents from entering the building.. kids have no discipline in the schools now.. cell phones while necessary for safty, are a distraction because children use them for other activities outside of mom or dad contact.

I have a possible solution right here: have a system where kids turn in their phones at the start of each class and then hand them back afterwards. Seems like their could be some theft concerns but I think this could work if done correctly

HUGE safety hazard. Children should have the right to protect themselves and have safe access to communicate outside of the school in emergency situations. Seems like a lawsuit just waiting to happen!

As someone wasn’t allowed their phone at school this is not a good idea at all not being able to use my phone when I needed was extremely stressful and almost gave me panic attacks. Believe it or not kids/teens actually do need a phone sometimes Edit: for clarification I actually needed my phone for medical reasons which is why it was so stressful

I think they just put them away while there in class. But to say they can’t have them at all is silly. Just another dumb idea from possibly the dumbest group of politicians in the country yet again.

My kids have their own devices. I spend a good 18 hours a day on my device. I don’t care about what they’re learning in school. It’s all propaganda. Who am I to judge?

As a teacher who used to be a student always on their phone. Kids today’s are on their phone way more than I was in school and that’s a problem.They can’t learn anything because they lack focus. PHONES NEED TO BE BANNED IN SCHOOL LOL 😂 This is good !

Why did they have to wait so long for this. They should be silenced except for parents numbers, and locked away in their backpacks. I have an app on my daughter's phone and its locked during school hours. She can only make a phone call.

Parents are fools if they don't agree with the ban. For hundreds of years, parents couldn't text or call their children. Now suddenly you think it's a right and not a privilege? You don't need to text/call them. If there's an emergency, the phone won't save them.

good to know this is going into effect. what if students deposited their phones in a bin at the classroom entrance and collect it before they leave for the next class? i would not support tracking because that is an invasion of privacy. I like the flip phone idea with only calling. IMO shootouts are are whole different story, and it is possible that parents might consider fenced in school buildings (not necessarily the whole campus), maybe metal detectors and armed guards (employ veterans?0 I am sure parents, teachers and lawmakers will come up with workable solutions!!!!.

You mean that same thing they did when smart phones were just coming out and kids ended up bringing them to school anyways and the teachers couldn't do anything because it wasn't THEIR property to touch so it caused an obvious rift from teachers whom actually WANTED to teach some kids and kids/parents that are too dumb to take the phone away from their dumb child xD

The 911 call should be from teacher or principal !! Drop phone coming in , p/u at lunch , put back , p/u leaving school. Make parents the enforcers , its their child(ren) !! If they cant or wont , scanners to ping phones at entrance orr scanners to prevent cell service/WiFi....

I’m not a fan of giving your kids smart phones or tablets. Even video game consoles. I have personally been addicted to shooting style video games and would spend hours and hours playing PS2. Finally had to snap out of it after a few weeks. I noticed how addictive it was. Haven’t played since. I also notice how addictive my phone is. Constant notifications all day to distract me from what I really need to be doing. I think for a child’s brain, this 24/7 access to the internet is dangerous and I highly recommend against it

Good luck implementing this ban. Parents and students will protest / refuse to cooperate. They'll hire lawyers. Cell phones have become so commonplace and such an integral part of life nowadays that it would be like banning kids from wearing shoes at school. I worked as an elementary school teacher in Calif, and some teachers in the 5th & 6th grades collected the phones at the start of the day and then returned them at the end of the day. It was a hassle -- kids arrive late to school or need to leave early, or claim to need the phone during lunch time to communicate with their parent, then the teacher is interrupted to deal with the phone. And teachers don't want to be responsible for the safekeeping of the phones during the school day--they are expensive and they are the personal property of the students. Who is liable if they are stolen or damaged while in the teacher's custody? I doubt that you'll get the teachers union to agree to this ban bc of the added responsibility it puts on the teachers, as well as the added danger if a student becomes confrontational & refuses to hand over their phone, which happens. Have you tried taking a phone away from a pre-teen or teenager lately?! The idea sounds good on paper but the implementation is another story.

This needs to go hand in hand with a serious change in school structure. End or reduce mandatory hour quotas, introduce a 4 day school week for middle and high schoolers, give middle schoolers more choice as to what they want to learn, and for the love of GOD stop pushing college for everyone.

it's somewhat pathetic that it's taken until the mid 2020,s for a few places to just start looking at this an an option. it never should've gotten to this point, as for a middle ground solution idk, not like everyone can afford two phones a kid,one smart for normal use,one dumb for during school, and idk how you'd control kids from being able to get to them if it's nearby.

Cell phones and computers have ruined kids!! They should be playing outside and doing homework from their books instead of computers that give them the answers, that’s not learning.

Normally i would be all for this but considering all the school shootings, i feel they need a phone for emergencies. Just make them keep their phones in their backpacks during class, that was the rule we had in school when i was a teenager.
