as a chilean american, the easiest english pronunciation is HIGH-vas (high, as opposed to low, stress on 1st syllable). Los HIGH-vas. easy as canadian apple pie.....if it exists. the "--vas" part DID have it's origins in the english word bass ("base"....as opposed to the fish bass) but it is NOT pronounced that way in spanish, despite what some chileans who are unfamiliar with north american english pronunciation might imply. hope that clears it up. spanish pronunciation is pretty easy, much more so than french (as a canadian i'm assuming you have some contact with that romance language). saludos!
As "bass" in small mouth bass. What's funny is that the name of the band back when they started was actually "The high & bass", wich came from somewhat of a mistranslation: In spanish, the same word is used for "tall" and "high" (alto), and the name of the instrument bass is also the word for short of height (bajo). They wanted to name the band as a reference for the difference in height of the members, but using english words. It might have been something like "The tall ones and the short ones", but they instead called themselves as mentioned above. Also, they might have mispronounced "bass" as the fish instead of the instrument, also adding the "v" sound instead of "b", as it's much more common in spanish. The thing is that when they became popular they decided to "chileanize" their name by changing it to "Los Jaivas", wich sounds almost like "high-bass" (but with a harder 'h' sound and a 'v' instead 'b'). It's fitting because it sounds like "jaiba", a type of crab here in Chile and South America. ¡Saludos!
@@RobkReacts When the band was born on 60´s was called "The High Bass" due to the difference in their heights. Later they change the musical genre towards folklore and change the name writing it as it sounds phonetically to "Los Jaivas"
@@pablorojasyanez6057 That's right. They made a pun of sorts using based on their height differences. Some were very tall ("altos" in Spanish), and some were short ("bajos" in Spanish) and a word for word translation of that, "altos-bajos," into English, which is "high bass." Then they used an approximation to the pronunciation of "high bass" in Spanish, "jaivas," which they thought was the correct way to spell "jaibas," a type of sea crab.
Hello bro happy to see your reaction I hope you continue enjoying this unique music and I leave you a song that will blow your mind I am sure of that it is called Tarka and Ocarina well only if you dare hahahaha and the other can be The Conquered Greetings espero ver alugana reaccion de esta dos canciones saludos
Hi, the legend says their group name “Jaivas” was kind of bad Spanish pronunciation for “High Bass” because in fact some of them are very tall . By the way some say you should pronounce High Bass, but only the first word sounds correct, instead you should pronounce something like Highbaz, with the ba as in the word bath and the z very soft. As a curious thing the Jaiva word is in fact a crab that lives along our shores whose meat is delicious.
Arco Iris also incorporated LA folklore /jazz/rock /prog a group i prefer over Jaivas . A very important group check any album from the perios 1972 to 1977
