Weight and size of the gear was always important for me and that’s why I’m still using APSC camera for my landscapes. I always carry midrange zoom, telephoto and wide angle. Lenses for full frame are just too big and it discourages me from upgrading… I’m able to carry my current set up without a backpack - two lenses go to the pockets in my jacket one on each side and I have a camera whit third lens on a strap. I know it is bad for lenses to carry them in the pockets but it saves me some time - I’m always able to change the lens whitout stopping. All of that gear also fits in my handlebar bag on my bike when I’m biketouring

Not the case..take a Nikon D600 "small full frame" & an AFD 20mm, 80-300mm -> (or similar zoom, which isn't heavy)

Regarding local shooting I have the opposite dilemma, on my doorstep I have a Country Wildlife Park, a beautiful coastline, the Brecon Beacons and Neath Waterfall Country. I’m very lucky I know, but it’s really tricky deciding which direction to head off in sometimes. I changed jobs 4 years ago and lost my company car, I would think nothing of a 3 or 4 hour drive to get to a location back then.

Sorry … I don’t ever miss shooting with film, even though I did it for years and participated with a friend, just last week, shooting a Sinar 4x5. Put another way, I happily use a computer to type and publish articles and books … and never ever dream of using a typewriter again.

Ive lightened my gear as much as I can but taking pics of wildlife is damm heavy. 16kg of gear , heavy clothing etc etc. Walking miles on a beach to photograph seals again then scaling basically a cliff, then more miles. See, your problem with gas consumption is having the steering wheel on the right side, creating more drag. The only sensible place for the steering wheel is on the left. We tried that right-side drive car a few years ago in Scotland, and we're lucky to be alive. So are some other people in cars we encountered.

Nice ! And I love the added humour in more recent episodes 😀 A few additional options to reduce carry weight : Start with yourself (this always applies to myself!) - most of us can lose a few kilos and it's usually a relatively easy job to get a few pounds off before a trip. For overnighters people always take too many clothes ! Be ruthless and cut the fat. If you are anything like me - and most people - you take too many lenses ! For day trips take the absolute minimum (usually 2-3 lenses). For landscapes f2.8 lenses (or faster) are rarely required, do your homework but most f4 lenses will be far lighter and save you a considerable amount of weight (and filter size) ! Leave your laptop behind and take an iPad (or similar) - you can now backup RAW files on to these and it's a huge weight saving. Switch your square filters to round magnetics. My Benro 5-filter kit weighted 992g (exc. case) whereas the Kase Wolverines (5 filters) weighs 265g inc. case. In 99% of cases these (or bracketing) will work just fine. Carry a water filtering system rather than overload yourself with litres of water. Most day trippers I see either carry far too much or nowhere near enough ! Check for water sources on a map before you start out. OK enough - this could go on for days ! Leave no trace !

@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 года назад
David. It was said as an extreme example, but of course it’s possible to take a great photo of a messy alleyway. Make it gritty, high contrast, and black and white to capture the character of the subject. It’s not up to us to show you how to take every photo. Get out there and find your own subjects. They’re everywhere if you look with the right attitude. Birmingham probably has some of the most depressing alleyways in the U.K. so you’re at a distinct advantage!

@@PhotographyOnline That's - a No, then? Pity! I do realise that all of you have your primary interests in the natural world, but that's exactly why it would be interesting to see your approaches to such a different type of subject. Still. your point about making the most of what is in reach is a valid one. Covid sort of imposed that on us all and as I am fortunate enough to have some open spaces nearby I found it to be less limiting than I expected. A lens with decent close up or macro capability really helps.

I never quite understanding a conundrum for landscape photographers. They mainly shoot with apertures around F11 to f22, yet the lenses they carry mainly have maximum apertures of f2.8 to f4.0 and with autofocus too. Just look at the huge 24/35/50mm modern lenses from Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc. If manufacturers can offer much smaller maximum apertures and manual focus only, surely the lenses can be made much smaller, simpler, lighter and certainly a lot cheaper.

@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 года назад
Hi Steve. A decent 35mm camera will cost under £100, although you can get ones which wil cost more. The Fuji 6x9 will cost around £800-£1200 but includes the lens (which is fixed). The Fuji GX617 is very expensive now, as they are quite sought after. You would be looking at £4000 upwards just for the body and one lens. When it comes to Large Format, prices are more reasonable, but vary. The cheapest option is to go for the Intrepid versions of the 4x5 and 8x10 cameras which will only cost around £300 and £500 respectively. When it comes to Ultra Large Format, then prices can go from being reasonable to ridiculous. You could pick something up for under £1000 if you got lucky, but could pay several thousand to have something custom made. Large format lenses are relatively cheap (or at least they can be) - costing between £200-£600 for many good options. Hope this helps.

Any comment about lens quality when going for "Bigger is better" as I thought that once you get to about 40 MPix on a 35mm sensor the lens becomes the limiting factor. I realise that a bigger negative/sensor will reduce this effect but how much ?.
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 года назад
A lens’s resolving power is more important on smaller sensors because the results needs to be enlarged by a greater degree. For example, you would need a lens with twice the resolving power to get the same quality (definition) on a MFT sensor compared to a FF sensor. So the larger the sensor (or negative) the less important the resolving power of the lens is.

I would never go into high-risk cities without a PacSafe, which has steel mesh and cables on straps and is lockable. If environment (outdoors or my home town) is safe, then I would use a backpack for the camera gear, which is a super comfortable way to carry camera gear. PS. Don’t worry Craig. We’ll never let you down (unlike your bro!). Thanks for watching.

Thanks for another great show. Glad that I'm not out wandering around in the woods with Nick today!

Never go into the woods with Nick. Many have never come out, or have at least had a serious limp when they've emerged.

My advice when exploring a new area that no one has been to and is unlikely to be at is to notify several people where you're going, when you left and when you're due back, if there's no one local to contact, pop in to the local law enforcement and let them know, as likely at some point they'd be contacted if you went missing anyways. Your camera "does size matter" comparison was like comparing a field mouse's equipment to a Clydesdale.

Those holes in the tripod structure will absolutely affect the stability. Maybe not much, but they definitely will, it is just physics.

You’re wrong. It’s been stress tested in a lab and adding the holes actually increases component strength. Ask any structural engineer and they will educate you on the laws of physics. Thanks for watching
