I guess humility really is the best medicine for our wounded souls, wounded by the poison of pride and vain glory.. God have mercy on us and may His loving hands reshape us into His likeness!
I find that pride is the most pervasive of all sins. It's always present in every thought and action. Even as I write this, I'm filled with pride in my recognition of pride's danger. Other passions like anger or lust come and go, but pride is always there under the surface.
Yes, i so understand. Reminds me of the old joke about the guy who received a special lapel button honoring his humility. And had it taken away because he wore it..😏😏
You could die at any moment 🙂 Always keeping that in mind may be humbling. Keeping death as your best friend may be helpful. Knowing that it could tap on your shoulder at any moment puts things into proper perspective.
It is the emptiness of a cup that makes it useful. Therefore the more empty it is, the more it can be filled. Let us empty ourselves of self before God so that He may fill us with His graces and fully use us as He sees fit. Your messages are always enlightening, Father Spyridon.
God does not want us to get rid of our identities. Through carying our cross we are actually becoming the most of ourselves we can possibly be. If we don't do that, we surrender to our egoistical indulgences that strip us of our humanity and make us no better than animals (actually worse, since we have forfeited our choice)
As always, THANK YOU. I once heard an Orthodox priest say that we must dive into the waters of humility to save ourselves, because the demons never follow us there. A lesson i often remember. Sometimes too late. But i do remember eventually..
Salt water or fresh? That is exactly why people go to a casino, when they lose their money, they suffer and gain humility, they humiliate themselves. The soul is Divine...............Falun dafa
I was thinking to boast a bit and show off on social media about a blessing HE is blessing me with. Then this pops up on my feed. HE is closer to us than our own thoughts. Unbelievable.
well...on the other hand, you could post that post showing off the blessing, but to the positive ,it's not enough to defend a temptation of the devil, we must counter attack. when the world says "look what I got" boasting in themselves....don't stay silent, but you say "look what God has given me" Boast in and about God, this gives Him the glory
@@RedDeckRedemption I have thought about that. But, even if I write the caption like that, it still one way or another will put the seed of pride in me. And envy and comparison in other's hearts.
True, but keep in mind Father Spyridon clearly believes the RCC is the root cause for Protestantism and it's evil teachings. See the previous THE GATE IS NARROW, FEW WILL ENTER video. Satan is responsible for Protestantism and it's evil teachings, just look at the baptist with 31+ different flavors to choose from, all with varying views and opinions of men. Then there is my former Episcopal Church which condones, supports, and even celebrates homosexuality these days and the ministers don't believe the Bible is true and inerrant. How is that even possible?
@@youraveragejoe123 Yes there is only one Church. For me it is not (yet) important what people call it. We have no orthodox church here. The most important is that God open my eyes and ears so I can know Him.
I was born into a Roman Catholic family. I grew up attending a Catholic school with a French priest. He was a decent Roman Catholic priest but he was assigned to a different parish and passed away. Thank you for being the spiritual leader for me at this time. I appreciate the intelligence preservation of ritual and spiritual protection in nearness to the orthodox church.
Maybe the RC Church began with good intentions but Satan sure changed that. He has kept people from learning that reincarnation is a fact of life....................Falun Dafa
I think I understand Ft. Spyridon. There are two glories in this world a fake (vain) glory and real glory. The fake glory you attain it through pleasurable means. The real glory on the other hand is attained through suffering, self denial, long suffering and repentace. The fake glory is accompanied by a demonic feeling to covet something in a rush. The real glory is attained in a more rational logical way truly using our intellect God gave us in its true purpose and form and peace accompanies the pursuit of this glory.
From a worldly perspective, the idea of "emptying" oneself in order to obtain "gifts" such that Christ and the Saints enjoyed (hatred, tortures, humiliation, even death) sounds a little insane. I admit candidly that while I get the theological reasoning that God cannot work if man is full of himself (thanks to his attachments to worldly things and passions), I also understand intimately what the struggle is like to know what the "right answer" to live life is according to the Scriptures and Saints...and yet just imagining trying to walk that path is terrifying. For non-Christians, this idea that suffering and sacrifice are foundational to both a godly life on Earth and the surest path to Heaven is the #1 stumbling block to acceptance. Heck, just casually reading the Philokalia fills one with dread, reading about the monks who wept at their own sins and prayed fervently for salvation, terrified as children that their own weakness would deny them the place by God they fought so hard for in the harsh sands of Egypt. Trying to translate that to a modern perspective, much less any halfway worldly one even in Roman times, just has my mind in knots at the impossibility of compromise or cooperation of nearly any kind. It is little wonder why other schismatic theologies have gone for the "salvation is guaranteed" route, or the "saved by predestination" route; these false lies are far easier to swallow. To me, it almost seems like monasticism is the easiest Christian path to walk (the monks at Scetis pitied laypeople for having the 'harder' spiritual fight for living in the world still); however a monk I will not be. How does one live in the world when compromise itself is literally a back door to the passions that lead to sin, and spiritual corruption? How does one answer this riddle, when most examples are of those who *left* the world? How on Earth do I square this circle without becoming 'unequally yoked'? I will watch your vid on the narrow path; hopefully that will provide an actionable answer, but I will leave this here for the rumination of others, and perhaps other suggestions. Thanks.
Been watching your videos lately, you make a lot of sense to me, I think you speak the truth, I have been so confused all my life about truth, you hear this and that Etc.it’s very confusing to people. I don’t think God wants us to be confused. I know you will not respond, but I do listen to your videos,
Thank you for your comment Darrell. The truth is objective, Christ is the Truth. If we cannot know the truth, then all is lost and we may as collapse into personal opinions and nothing matters. Similarly, morality has no truth without objectivity, and there is nothing beyond pleasure and pain with which to judge our behaviour. God bless you.
I think solitude helps one in this struggle. Socializing inevitably bring on these passions for one such as me. It is hard to maintain solitude for those of us living in the world though. Still, it is something I must struggle harder to do.
I don't think solitude is strictly necessary. Jesus rarely sought solitude. He was always with his disciples and encountering people, teaching them and healing them. One helpful thing I've found when I'm with people is to fill my heart with love for them, even strangers. Having love for others subdues the passions.
@@alteredcatscyprus The temptation of solitude is falling for one's echo chamber ie do not believe everything you think. Monks have failed in the worse way by going solo. It can be a form of....Vainglory. Good to check your head with others or at least a priest. Prelest (illusion/delusion) is easily acquired on solo trips. It is not recommended by sage monastics. Now if you mean "socializing" and shallow gossipy nonsense, I most agree. Then it is better to see that clearly and avoid THAT specifically. We focus our disappointments in others, by the very things we dislike most in ourselves. Why? because we know those qualities so well already. Our souls are like onions with many many layers. Gossip is a simple onion skin, but wait....there is MORE....it may be good....it may scare us to death. This is often the heart of soul searching and learning oneself. The Unraveling of the onion/soul, and present our souls and hearts to The Lord. May God bless and help all of us. It tore me apart, yet, I am so much stronger for it. Keep going.- Father Seraphim Rose is a good start. He bio is a wonderful compendium of Orthodoxy that is imbued in a man's life. Amen.
@@ienjoyapples i think Jesus often sought solitude, he certainly spent much of his time ministering to others and often went without food and sleep doing so. But it also says he would wake up early and retreat to a solitary place to pray (Mark 1:35) and sometimes he would even send the crowds away (like Matthew 15:39). I guess The Lord helps us to know when the right time is for either one
@@alteredcatscyprus I often encounter others with this underlying feeling of alienation and contempt for mankind. I try to catch myself when I get these evil feelings, and replace them with positive feelings of love and understanding. It takes practice, but the first step is recognizing evil in your heart.
BODY OF CHRIST SAVE ME! save me from my weak and faltering self. SAVE ME FROM ALL GREED OF MONEY, OF POWER AND WORDLY SHOW. SAVE ME FROM BETRAYING YOU DEAR LORD IN WORD OR THOUGHT AND DEED.
Thank you Father. makes me call to mind saint Paul's experience 2 cor 12 :7- And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of revelations, a thorn in the Flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me.
Thank you very much for being such a good teacher, God bless you! I found your videos exactly at a time when I needed good teachings. Father Spyridon, may I please ask what's the best way to repent? I'm not even sure if I know how to repent correctly. By the way, I have a burning question at the back of my mind, "What will life be like in the afterlife?" Is it a sin to write a fantasy book inspired by God and the story of Christ? I've written a 450-page book so far, and I'm terrified at the possibility that if I ever do release it, God will feel dishonored if I accidentally misinterpreted him in my inspired work. How should I act if I ever become wealthy and successful? Is it bad to become wealthy? Thank you for your time if you've read this comment and or replied!
Humility often comes when we see our heart the way God sees our heart! Humble yourself, draw near to God and he will draw near to you. The humble yourself is the pride that is in us, therefore humble yourself. Thank you for your teaching!
Father Spyridon, as we know we are in the end days and the mark of the beast is around the corner. We know there's no forgiveness for taking the mark. Why doesn't the Greek Orthodox Church mention the mark and what it means. So many Greeks will perish in he'll cause lack of knowledge.
To understand that we live in the world, but we are not of the world/ We are living members of the mystical Body of Christ/ God creates us to be saints/ Eternal life or eternal perdition/
Psalms 103:10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. Proverbs 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Thank you again Father spryidon for this much needed message! I have struggled much over the years with my own passions of pride and self assurance, only to come up empty and broken. Humility is something I work so very hard to obtain, and usually only do so by suffering. I am thankful for your messages each week and soon will visit my first Orthodox Church (I found one in the neighboring city).
Anytime I would thank my parish priest for a good homily or for ministering to my soul in some way, he would always reply with “Thanks be to God” to show humility, knowing he is just a vessel and good things “cometh down from thee, the Father of Lights”. So now, I just say “Thanks be to God for…” whatever I was grateful to him for. And when people thank me for something or express gratitude towards me, I’ve gotten in the habit of replying with “Thanks be to God.” So, Fr. Spyridon, thanks be to God for your ministry. 🙏 The point you made about Him withholding His Grace when we’re vainglorious - this was new to me and it makes perfect sense. Making a habit of using the phrase “Thanks be to God” can protect us from vainglory, and saying it to others when we compliment them can protect them from falling into vainglory. (p.s. Please forgive me if I sound vainglorious in this comment, as well. Just wanted to share this advice from my priest in case it could help others.)
Perhaps it is good to share! I was told that if someone thanks me for something I had done, I should reply "Thank God" and give God the glory for helping me. Kwim? 💒
The degree to which you do not possess the powers of God corresponds with the degree to which you would use those powers in vainglory. What a great insight, and very humbling. Thank you Father.
I only ever used my gifts for his service I still have so much less than everyone I am so sad I am left behind and never chosen for anything good. He always chooses others and sumps me away
What on earth is that at 4:19 on the left just about Father Spyridon's right shoulder? It looks like a dark cloud. Not sure what to make of if although I'm a little frightened of it.
Dear Father, what a powerful and unoften taught reflection on “ gifts of nature and gifts of Grace .” You are bring used by the Lord in mighty ways . Thoxa to Theo 🙏
Thank you father for your wise words, i turned to jesus and i am eager to learn more about christ and how i can live a good christian life to honor god, which is hard in our current world.
humility is never preached enough.... if we could see how imperfect we really are revealed just for a moment every human would turn beet red with shame. shame at how highly we held ourselves... God wants to change us though... so we have no excuse to be mad at Him for making us like this when He wants to improve us.
Yes, pride goeth before a fall. “The pomp of power, the boast of heraldry, all await alike the inevitable hour…the paths of (earthly) glory lead but to the grave.”
You say we will always fail, and this is true as we are sinners and will always sin. We live amongst them (sinners) in their world, where forth our bread and butter comes from (The Economy), we cannot "not" live a manner whereby we will be perfect or good enough for God's grace, as I don't know anyplace that will feed your children (money) that will not have sin. God's grace is not something you get to choose !, it's given to us regardless. If it were not so, no sinner would be able to repent in his last breath. This is the most humbling thing of all, that God loves you regardless of what you say. I sin out of frustration, sometimes boredom, I don't do it to hurt God or myself, it's just what happens when your human. THANK GOD !!! Jesus understands that!. You have a tough job Sir, I am humbled by your calling. Glad there are still men that are devout.
Thank you Father for your spiritual posts. I am Eastern Greek Orthodox for my long life, and I believe this way stronger each day. But hearing from you one the struggles we face is such a blessing to me. Thank you. Patricia
What is The Law, Grace, Faith and Hope. The law is the 10 commandments and sin is the breaking of any of those 10 commandments and the 4th commandment says Remember to keep the Sabbath Day Holy and the wages for unforgiven sin is death, not eternal life and the soul that sinneth shall surely die and cease to exist after being thrown into the lake of fire as part of the final judgement of the lost in the end. Grace is God mercy towards us and time to overcome all sin in your life which is called a probationary period. and we pray to Jesus and ask Him to forgive us of sin. which He is faithful and just to do during this probationary period. And God wants us to be literal about the sins that we are asking to be forgiven of which is accountability. And finally God wants us to give up in our life whatever sin it is that we are asking to be forgiven of which is also part of forgiveness. Those who think it is okay to sin do not have the right spirit in them. Rom 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Rom 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law only as a means to salvation, but under grace? absolutely not! Faith is believing in, and trusting in, the one you have believed in, who is Jesus Christ incarnate. 1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. And Jesus Christ is our only Hope as salvation is found in no other as there is no other name by which mankind can be saved. Acts 4:12 Beloved: Salvation is a 2 step process. The 1st step in the process of salvation is being justified by what Christ which happens when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their person savior. And after being justified by what Christ did by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. The next step in salvation is sanctification. And Sanctification is a moment by moment and a day by day process of obedience to the will of God out of love ALL of the days of your life after accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. And To Repent of sin, means to ask The Son of God who is Jesus Christ incarnate for forgiveness of sin and he wants us to be literal about the sin that we are asking Him to be forgiven of and part of asking for forgiveness also means that we will give up in our lives whatever sin it is that we are asking to be forgiven of. Again Salvation is a 2 step process. The 1st step in the process of salvation is being justified by what Christ which happens when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their person savior. And after being justified by what Christ did by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. The next step in salvation is sanctification. And Sanctification is a moment by moment and a day by day process of obedience to the will of God by doing the will of God out of love ALL of the days of your life after accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. And Our mission is to study the word of God so that we can share the word of God with those who are receptive to it and to be transformed into the character of Jesus Christ by our choices and by our actions. Mat 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The character we form in this world by our choices and actions will determine our destiny for eternity. Our future is determined by the way in which we now allow ourselves to be transformed into the image and character of Jesus Christ. which is why every person who says they follow Christ is to be transformed into the image and character of Jesus Christ by their choices and by their actions on a moment by moment and on a day by day basis with the help of the Holy Spirit. Accepting, the gift of grace, forgiveness, mercy, salvation and eternal life is dependent on what we do, today, tomorrow and the rest of our life, action wise, till we die that determines if a person has accepted, God's grace, the gift of eternal life, salvation, and God's forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Lord. And life tomorrow is promised to NO one. Those who choose not to become like Jesus Christ in character; Must know that their profession to follow Jesus Christ is a fraud. Obedience to the will of God out of Love is a requirement of those who would be saved. God knows our wants, needs and our desires, and He can read our heart, mind, and soul, and He knows our intentions and our desires by our actions. Jesus estimates the purity of motive, thoughts and actions and the character that we posse. which is used along with the things written in the books which determines if we have accepted the gifts described above. He looks to see how much of His Spirit and character is in us by our actions How much of His likeness of character is in our life which is revealed in us by our actions. To be great in God’s kingdom is to be as a little child in humility, in simplicity of faith, and in purity of love. And what you have done for those whom you think to be the least worthy of your help you have done unto the Lord. Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." James 4:4, KJV 1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters: Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God, the world and money. No one is justified by keep the 10 commandments ALONE since we are saved by grace. But keeping the 10 commandments is still a requirement to salvation. That is because sin is the breaking of any of the 10 commandments and the wages for unforgiven sin is death and the soul that sinneth shall surely die.
We are called to be perfect in Christ who knew no sin and that is the purpose of grace. God's grace is mercy and time to overcome all sin in our lives. No one is justified by keeping the 10 commandments ALONE since we are saved by grace. But keeping the 10 commandments is still a requirement to salvation. That is because sin is the breaking of any of the 10 commandments and the wages for unforgiven sin is death and the soul that sinneth shall surely die. We are called to be perfect in Christ who was without sin. And he was without sin Because he did not live His life after the desires of the flesh. But rather after the teachings of God. Beloved: Salvation is a 2 step process. The 1st step in the process of salvation is being justified by what Christ which happens when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their person savior. And after being justified by what Christ did by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. The next step in salvation is sanctification after being justified is sanctification And Sanctification is a moment by moment and a day by day process of obedience to the will of God out of love ALL of the days of your life after accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. And We are called to be perfect in Christ as sin is no longer our master if you have been born again baptism by immersion as per Acts 2:38 and it is possible to be perfect in Christ on a moment by moment and on a day by day basis. with the help of the Holy Spirit in our lives. With God in our lives, all things are possible. Rom 6:14,15 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law ONLY as a means to salvation, but under grace as well. 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? By no means! The moment a person is forgiven of whatever sin it is that they have asked to be forgiven of. At that moment they are perfect in Christ. And as long as you do not sin again, you are still perfect in Christ and if you do sin thereafter and you ask to be forgiven again at that moment you are perfect in Christ again. And part of asking for forgiveness, also means that you will choose to turn away from and give up in your life whatever sin it is that you are asking to be forgiven of. Satan wants people to believe the lie that it is not possible to be perfect in Christ. So that that the people will continue to sin. With God in our lives all things are possible. Be Holy just as He has called you to be holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Peter 1:15-16 It is possible to be perfect in Christ on a moment by moment and on a day by day basis with the help of God the Holy Spirit by confessing our sin or sins and by choosing not to sin. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, Jesus is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. The moment a person is forgiven of what ever sin or sins it is that they have asked to be forgiven of. At that moment they are perfect in Christ God also wants us to be specific about what we are asking to be forgiven of. And if you choose to sin again after being forgiven then you are to ask Jesus for forgiveness again. and Part of asking for forgiveness also means that you will choose to give up in your life whatever sin it is that you are asking to be forgiven of. otherwise a person is taking advantage of God's grace. With God in our lives, all things are possible. The moment a person is forgiven of whatever sin it is that they have asked to be forgiven of. At that moment they are perfect in Christ because Christ is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins And as long as you do not sin again, you will remain perfect in Christ because you have not sinned again. But if you do sin thereafter then you are ask to Jesus to forgive you again who is faithful and just to do so and at that moment again you are perfect in Christ again. But Part of asking for forgiveness also means that you will choose to give up in your life whatever sin it is that you are asking to be forgiven of. Otherwise a person is taking advantage of God's grace. Keeping trying to overcome all sin in your life and never give up trying is my advice Complete surrender to the will of God by doing His will is a requirement to salvation. How to totally surrender to God. Constantly, throughout the day, continue to ask God what He wants you to do and then wait and listen to what He says through the Holy Spirit and He will let you know what he wants you to do. And if you get done with what He asked you to do then ask God again what it is that He wants you to do and then wait and listen to what He says and He will let you know through the Holy Spirit what he wants you to do next. Our character by our choices are to be transformed into the character of Jesus Christ by our choices and by our actions 2 Cor 3:18 But we all, with unveiled faces, looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. and Jesus said to be Holy as I am Holy. 1 Peter 1:16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 John 3:21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God, 22 and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight. 1 John 3:20 Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things. Beloved never give up in trying to be like Christ in character Repeat this process over and over again throughout the day. always, everyday and forever. The reason we are called to be perfect in Christ who was without sin by repenting of sin and by giving up in our lives all sin that we have asked to be forgiven of is so that we can live in harmony with the other created being who never choose to sin. and That 2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
God's grace is won or lost at birth. We have no choice because all is already known "before you were in the womb". Otherwise we just slap God in the face and call him a liar, which is blasphemy. Jesus said "All who call me Lord will not enter the Kingdom. Only those who do the will of The Father will enter the Kingdom." I don't do the will of the father. I don't heal the sick and raise the dead. I went out on limbs to present Jesus and stuff. It never showed me anything. I resign to my ultimate fate which is already known. It all comes down to who is chosen or not. Which was already known at birth. (Yes, that one is chosen! To hell with that one!)
Those "gifts" are: chronic, incurable illnesses, clinical depression, accidents that will ruin your life and all sorts of suffering. Who has been through heel, he finds extremely difficult to believe in God and that He is "good".
Now according to your teachings would not your condemning be against those like King David who danced before the LORD? Would you have condemned him for eating the show bread from the Tent Of Meetings the Tabernacle of the LORD? What about the confession that he was conceived in sin?
Vanity is to pride as boy is to man. Vanity within us can grow into pride. Even an angel fell from Heaven because of pride. Pride grows in vain glory. Vain glory is empty glory. It is empty because it is earthly glory. Vain glory dies. It is empty to boast vain glory because every good thing has been given to us by God. Vain glory denies that truth that God has given us all these good gifts. How could we boast?
Fr Spyridon you tell the truth. I often wonder about Fame and Fortune when a person dies and the masses adoring these people they all die in the end . Jesus Christ said Heaven and Earth will pass away but my word's will not pass away. Jesus also said reach for the gift's that have eternal life. The Bread of Eternal Life Amen 🙏
So in Hebrews " bring many sons to glory" means not just accepting Christ as savior, but becoming obedient learning how change life with repentance. Or learning how to turn a broken will over to Gods will? Learning how to "let God" do for us that which we cannot do for our-self? What if a person accepts Jesus as Lord and savior but never changer their sinful life will they go to hell?
This is SO PROFOUND!!! A real awaking for the purpose of man. Thank you father Spyridon. May our Merciful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ always bless you!!! The unworthy of Las Vegas

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'" the Pope want to change the Lords prayer becasue he says God does not lead us into temptation. i was told that vain glory does.
I recently read the first 30 chapters of Augustine's on Grace & Free Will, and everything said here is in agreement. We have received grace for grace; even our works are gifts. Without him we cannot do any good thing, so that none may boast. And so on. I have been guilty of boasting and thereby rejected God's gifts.
