A lot of Hebrew, ANE and biblical scholars think that the “us” in Genesis is referring to the Devine council. Which is basically a court made up of the “sons of God” which are God’s heavenly children (aka. The original title of the “angels”). Although God makes the final decision and is the head of the court, God allows them to put in their two cents in making earthly decisions and running heaven. There’s some biblical scholars that believe Genesis and other parts of the Bible allude to God wishing for humans to have a similar role on earth, but they forfeited their position when they eat of the fruit of evil. There might also be some hints that God intended to allow humans to eat the fruit of knowledge eventually when they were ready (and with his guidance, but this is also debated). Also, the concept of the trinity was likely influenced by second temple Judaism text written after the exile to Babylon and before Jesus. It did not come from medieval times.

An interesting note about the Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden story, and the Forbidden Fruit. While today we think of an apple as a distinct kind of food, the original word itself (rendered as _apel_ ) or it's varied equivalents in all of the European languages actually just meant fruit/vegetable in general. In other words things like strawberries, or potatoes, or nectarines, or plums or peaches would all be considered apples. It was only in the early modern times, and well after the Renaissance, that it started to become a distinct kind of fruit. For example oranges, were originally just called citruses (in French _citron_ ). Or, depending on the specific region of Europe, "chinese apples" - because they were originally believed to come from China (an interestingly the etymology of the word "orange" itself comes from _neither_ the fruit _nor_ the color - but the _tree._ So what we call today and _orange_ was originally called an _apple of the orange tree_ ). A great example of this can be seen in French. In that language, the word for apple is _pomme._ Potatoes are called _pomme de terre_ - "apples of the earth" (because they grow in the ground, rather than from a fruiting tree). And the word _pomegranate_ is actually a composite of _pom/pomme_ and [indirectly] _granum/granatum_ (seeds) - meaning literally "the apple of many seeds". Which would make perfect sense for anyone who has ever eaten a pomegranate. This could have implications not just for the fruit in the Garden of Eden, but even things like the golden apples of Aphrodite in Greek myth.

The Moses one is tricky because actually Moses is the first one to throw his staff when he first meets God. But Aaron is the one who threw it in front of Pharaoh.

No matter how many of these I watch, I smile all over again at how perfect those introductory animations illustrate what "knowing better" looks like! Perfect! and funny.

Cool video! It clears up many misconceptions. However, I would like to clarify a few minor things: 1.) 0:26 He says it is incorrect that Moses threw down his staff and became a snake. In the Bible he actually did, just not in front of Pharaoh. God first demonstrated to Moses that it would be done and then Aaron performed it in his stead. Moses' staff is in Exodus 4:4, and Aaron's is in Exodus 7:10. 2.) 2:51 I think this was meant as satire, but the KJV bible is not 'the official original version'. It is just considered by many to be the most reliable English translation, mainly because only a few people had access to old manuscripts of the Bible before more archaeological discoveries and before the internet. Now, some people believe that translation is directly inspired by God and therefore is the best translation, while others like the translations that are based on older manuscripts we now have discovered and have easy access to for translating to English. These are generally being translated from Hebrew or Greek, depending on the manuscript and section of the Bible. 3.) 4:58 Noah did send out birds; first a raven, then a dove. See Genesis 8:6-12. 4.) 9:18 In case it wasn't clear, this is what the book 'Paradise Lost' depicts of Heaven, not what the Bible depicts. 5.) 20:20 While Genesis does not mention the serpent as being Satan or the devil, Revelation 12:9 and 20:2 (the opposite end of the Bible) mention "that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan" and "that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan" respectively. It does not necessarily say that this is the same serpent, but the imagery of the text seems to imply it, meaning this notion would come from around 86-90 AD if you believe it and around 300 AD if you don't. However, the Hebrews/Jews may have believed the serpent was the devil or a depiction of the devil even earlier than that. 6.) 26:09 His interpretation is not the only way to reconcile the 'us' used for God in Genesis. Firstly, the other 'gods' of other nations are said time and time again in the Bible to be only idols made of wood and stone, not actual gods. The point is that the 'gods' of these other nations are not real and therefore worthless, that is a clear message. Secondly, the Hebrews often referred to God as plural, without any reason why, and so the 'us' can just be the pronoun that should be used for God. On top of that, most Christians believe the 'us' is God, the Spirit of God (named in the old testament) or Holy Spirit (named in the New Testament), and presumably Jesus as well. Jesus would presumably be there based on the depiction in John 1:1-3 of 'The Word of God' existing from the beginning, which appears to be used as another name for Jesus. Reading through every part of the Old Testament rather than only small chunks should make it clear that the Hebrews and the Bible both depict God as the only God who actually exists, not just Christians. I hope those clarifications are helpful, I tried to make sure that all of these were based in 'fact' as stated by the Bible, and not my own opinion, without spamming too many sources.

For someone who was raised in the LDS (Mormon) faith, it's surprising how many parallels there are between Paradise Lost and the LDS teachings about pre-mortal existence. In both versions Lucifer becomes Satan after losing a quarrel with Jesus (who didn't equal God) in which Lucifer managed to convince a third of the inhabitants of heaven to his side. I kinda assumed all this time that that plot was more or less unique to Mormonism, and not also a part of one of the most well-known works of 17th century English literature. The main difference is that in the LDS version the conflict wasn't between angels, but souls of humans who were yet to be born (although, either way in LDS cosmology angels are human souls sent by God), and the conflict was over whether to give mortal humans the ability to choose between good and evil (a plan made up by God and defended by Jesus) or force them to only make good choices (a plan proposed by Lucifer).

The New Testament however, holy hell, there’s a lot of suspense, intense moments, and the character development + pacing is to DIE for. Even if conflicts are resolved usually kind of stupidly or anticlimactically.

Also: the names of god are spexifically refering to different aspects of him. Namely, יandהandבandה can be even further broken down based on the vowels used in them. "magic" (referred to in judaism as practical kabbalah) can be used in a state of either extreme purity, or extreme impurity and all comes from god. He created the zodiac, angels to rule parts of the days and years, and specific times of day where he is particularly in a state of Gevurah/Judgement, Chesed/Loving-Kindness, and other aspects refered to in judaism as the sefirot. See for example Bilaam (who copulated with his donkey to get into an extreme state of impurity), when he is hired by the foreign king to curse the jews he is using the moment that god is expressing pure Gevurah/Judgement to try to curse people. While it normally works, since the jews are his chosen people every curse is turned into a blessing. Bilaam is a particualarly big example of this sort of thing, and his punishment in Jewish "Purgatory"/ Gehennmom is to boil in a gat of semen. At least now, you know better.

I just want to point out that if you read all of Genesis 2, it's basically retelling the creation story. Verse 4 starts out by saying that it is the story about creation. Verse 5 is before there plants on the earth, and before there were people to care for the plants, which already happened in chapter 1.

Hey, KB! The apple being the forbidden fruit might stem from the fact that in Latin the words for “evil” (_malum_) and “apple” (_mālum_) sounded similar, with the latter being a longer “a”. From here, people might have made the connection between the two and started referring to the forbidden fruit as apple. Interestingly enough, in Old English, apple (spelled “æpple”) referred to fruit in general, and then might have changed the meaning to mean the apple we know of specifically since it’s the representative fruit for Europeans. Similar thing can be applied to French word for apple “pomme” which came from Latin word “pomum” referring to any kind of fruit.

And in all likelihood, the "gods" (plural) meaning was exclusively how "Elohim" was used in the very ancient times before the Old Testament was written down. When Genesis says "God created the heavens and the earth," it's "Elohim" that appears there in the Hebrew original, and the passage could very easily have meant "The gods created the heavens and the earth," as though it were a team effort. Oh -- and did we mention that, archaeologically, Yahweh (the god of the Hebrews) was traditionally accompanied by his wife Ashera (another god)? This practice was condemned by Judean King Josiah in 2 Chronicles 34, who apparently wanted ONLY Yahweh to be worshipped.

Oh, well, if he's verified, Jesus must be real.
