Lost $5000 On A Scam Repackaged Vintage MTG Pack 

That was repackaged on a cellophane wrap machine. Those packs that were factory sealed never looked like that or came upside down. That was opened before you ever received it.

You should let everyone know the name of the retailer that sold you those. In a buyer beware world we consumers need to share specific information. You where robbed.

Jeremy, you get only 2 rares with the Beta Starter. Also, I have seen the wrap like the one you had. Lastly, the cards after the booklet can be upside down, it has happened. The Rares are in line with the press sheet also, the deck is legit. Actually, the pull isn't the worst, if you watch my video, I think I pulled a Smoke and Force of Nature. My Time Walk and Underground Sea made up for it.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but ever since alpha both the outer and inner card packs have been sealed like cigarette packs with a quick pull tab that goes around horizontally and all the cards are facing the same way and are never upside down. Hopefully you paid via credit card and can issue a dispute and get your cash back (even if you did it through paypal, go to your credit card they will push back on paypal when they try and weasel out of getting you your money back) MTG Headquarters deserves better!

That was cool! Ankh of Mishra is rare. I used to run it in this awesome blue/white land-destruction deck (until Land Tax got banned)

The fact that you recorded everything might mean you can recover through a lawsuit. Great evidence.

I had a nice set up cards from MTG.... gave them all away... some people enjoy it more than others and I think it is good to sometimes make someone else happy.

I don't think you should call this one a scam or repackage... Ankh of Mishra and Howling mine are the rares. Also its "Mish-ra", not "Mirsh-a"... On the Beta print sheet they are consistent to what you opened. You have other perfectly mint cards. Sure the inner packaging looked funny, and the second portion was upside down, but it wasn't 1 card of the commons faced the other way, it was all in unison. The print sheet might have been loaded in wrong, esp in 1994. I'Im sick of everyone freaking out about these old vintage when they dont pull a P9 or Dual Land.. odds are 1/10 for each of those. that means 80-90 percent of the time time, they are not in the pack, so we freak out.. ?!?!?

I used to work for a company that remodeled apartments, a lot of the apartments were evictions that were past 21 days, so we had to throw everything in the trash, we used to find all kinds of nice stuff and keep it, I remember finding a box once that was filled with MTG cards and it had a huge binder in it filled with more MTG cards and a couple of MTG books with super cool art in them, there must have been a few thousand cards in it because for a box full of cards it was pretty damn heavy ( it Was a Large sized moving box with stacks of cards held together with rubber bands inside zip lock bags), I took the box home because the cards looked cool, this girl I liked at the time had a little brother who liked playing card games, so I visited her that weekend and gave her brother the whole box of cards, he was super excited and I felt pretty cool giving a kid a ton of cards to play with, this was back in 2004 and now I wish I had kept the damn cards to my self. (I also found a box full of comic books once too that I sold to one of my coworkers for like $20 lol... probably should have kept that too, damn, I was 21 at that time when I worked for that company and obviously I didn't know shit, I wonder how much shit I pretty much gave away back then for not knowing what things were, I mostly kept electronics and furniture and any jewelry I came across, didn't think about collectibles, now that I watch shows like american pickers and pawnstars I wonder how much valuable shit I threw in dumpsters LO, I worked for that company for 2 years and we trashed around 3 - 4 apartments a week.)

you actually had two rares. Ankh and howling mine are both rares. you just didn't get any "good" cards. altho isn't ankh worth about 300?

Well, you did get one of the coolest uncommons with the Icy... very cool to see one of those fresh from the pack.

I agree. You would be doing a service by letting know who sold you that deck. This will help potential customers avoid a bad seller and save other people going through the horror you did.

Tum tum tum. SPLAGACK! I have no idea whats going on here. I have some friends (2) who used to play this game. One of them has a chest (seriously, like a treasure type chest) FULL of these cards. Whenever he has asked me to help him move in the past, there are 2 things I always dread. 1. Old school piano, actually compressed a disc moving that hog. 2. His "chest" of MTG cards. I swear it is a VERY close second to the piano.

I have opened countless Beta and Unlimited starters (when I could get them) and I have never ever NEVER seen once packaged like that. The packaging didn't change all the way through Revised. You got hosed. You need to contact the seller and if he vouched for that starter he needs to honor his voucher. Good thing you recorded the opening because it is now straight up evidence.

Remember that in the early days, WotC was a very small company on a limited budget, so their printing and packaging would have been pretty primitive. (This is also why the original Limited Edition came out as Alphas and Betas in the first place. That wasn't intentional so much as an accidental change in how the corners were cropped.) Howling Mine and Ankh of Mishra are rares within the printing of the series, even if the cards are not that hard to find today.

I have never seen a Beta Starter opened before, but I have seen Magic Starter Decks where one half is reversed from the other half. That said, the packaging looked slightly suspect, but you're two rares were present.

I believe the pack to be legit. If anyone repacked that they would not put Icy manipulator or dark ritual. Scammers have no honor, heart or soul. Remember, these sets were called alpha and BETA for a reason. I've opened one of these with the front part upside down and that was back in the day. I highly doubt anyone was sorting packs back then. (I've also opened a pack of wyvern TCG and got a magic card in that! these companies make a heck of a lot of mistakes)

I'm sorry to see what happened with your box opening, but remember that you have been blessed with some insane pulls! Love your attitude and the enjoyment you have when cracking those packs. Just keep on doing what you are doing and we will keep crushing that like button

I'm not really clear on what you're issue is. The cards all look mint, you received two rares in the proper location. Card flips happen on the rule book. Just because you open a beta starter doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get Power or a Dual land....sometimes you just don't get what you wanted, and that's when you would go buy more. The problem is now is that it's another $6-7k for another try!

Ankh of Mishra is definitely rare as is howling mine. Was mad when I got them back in the day too.

Beta starters are definitely wrapped like that sometimes and the rares are sometimes in a differently direction.

Not repackaged - I played during unlimited and things like this were actually common - when the entirety of the uncommons were flipped, the rares were crap (the golem and howling mine are ick) I also personally opened unlimited decks that were 100% rares. They were common issues back when it was a current set.

the nice thing about beta rates, no matter how bad, is that they will be reasonably valuable since there are so few them, so people trying to collect sets will pay a lot for them

Is that pack of plastic cards is REALLY sold for $5000? Like in really people paying real $5000 to get this pack? And if they cost so much why don't you just print them yourself, what difference does it make if you play with these or self-printed as long as opponent can't tell a card by its back?

that looked to be a legitimate pack. the rares were not horrible and all the cards were definitely "pack fresh"

I think that was a repack. I've never seen basic lands mixed in with the other cards. Granted, most of the cards I opened were boosters. But, when I did open starter decks, I don't ever remember seeing lands mixed throughout the deck.

Did anyone see Daniel Chang's beta opening recently? That inner wrapping was so tight that he had to razed blade the plastic. No way this was a legit package.

I have opened and seen these things opened a few times and that didn't look correct at all. Even the outer wrapping looked wrong before seeing the inner wrapping. Sorry about that =/

That did seem kind of suspicious, but then again back then we saw lots of strange stuff. But that inside shrinkwrap did seem wrong. And it's been to long ago for me to remember if I got any like that when they were brand new.

Swords to the Plowshare is around $70 which pales in comparison to what you spent on this though.

It was worth 8 buck in store in 1994, he was joking about that because it was printed on the box, look it up, a Beta starter deck is worth around 4000$ these day, there's very, very few left.

those two rares are worth 280.00, i know its a drop in the bucket compared to how much starter deck was though. packs are going for about 700 right now for beta booster packs.

This really bothered me. I watched quite a few Beta box starter openings last night after seeing this clip...what is strange about this one was the original outer seal looked solid...I would think that "wrap" would be so much tougher to mimic (with the pull tab)...the inside looked very sketchy...the flipped cards didn't raise as many red flags for me as the inner wrap did. What ended up happening? Was this a seller you'd worked with before?

It was the first run of beta decks, the company that did stuff for wizards was still trying to do everything right and on the first run they messed up. I herd of people not getting rares, getting alpha cards in their beta starter, and several other issues. I remember on the release day of tempest, I bought a starter and my lotus petal was backward in the cards, it was the only card turned around, awkward, but things like that has happened

Agreed that it looks like a repack. The actual cards were not even sealed but wrapped. The other beta openings are clearly sealed. The fact that they are upside down is also a pretty big clue.

Might be a bad deal, but it sure brought back memories of when I started playing the game... I wouldn't mind having that original art fireball in my collection again. Anyway, such is life.. better luck next time.

I would be contacting the people you purchased this from, Jeremy. Howling mine IS a rare but that is really sketch that the pack was upside down and that the shrink wrap came off like reynolds food wrap. I don't know how it would have been rewrapped with that little pull tab but it is very possible.

$7 was the price in 1993, he was just pointing out how low the cost was on these back in the day, these are worth $4,000 nowadays.

I can't say if it was repacked or not but the Mine and Ankh are most certainly rare. Not particularly expensive ones but still rare.

Awesome video to see you opening beta. But a terrible investment. I would just buy a black lotus and 2 duel lands and a bunch of random beta cards and it would cost half as much.

Howling Mine and Ankh are rares, but you should've had at least one or two more rares. I also noticed, how each card, in the corners on the bottom, there's little white spots on all the cards, like they're possibly marked. Don't know if that's the case or not, but it was something I noticed.

Oh crap that sucked, too bad Creepy Rudy wasn't around back then, I think he said at some video that the pack plastic will always have golden strip line in legit packs.
