Ask a mortician also talked about Hart Island in her video on "Handling the Coronavirus Dead in New York." If anyone else is interested in learning more about the subject of what to do with the deceased during a pandemic. I know that mass trench burials bring up unpleasant images for people. But, it was interesting to learn why they are necessary at times, without sensationalizing the practice.

I first heard of Hart Island when I went down a Disney rabbit hole. Bobby Driscoll, Peter Pan's model and voice actor, is buried there. Child stars often live tragic lives, but his is among the saddest to me. I'm surprised there isn't a book or movie about his life.

I’m in NYC and very much aware of Rikers violence, paperwork that guards deliberately sent in after deadline passed. Crazy to think and a list of other stuff through the years. Rikers is a dreaded word here. Yet this version of Rikers is the Kinder, Gentle version. Lol. Yes. Ppl need to know why it’s still called “the tombs”

The one in Seattle is actually called Seattle Underground. They built the current city on top of after the last really big earthquake not the Nisqually earthquake in 2001. I have lived in Bremerton for 36 years which is an hour ferry ride from Seattle. I have never been to Seattle Underground but I hear it’s okay but it’s also filled with a lot of homeless people as well. It’s a tourist attraction as well and there are supposedly shops there too.

Fun fact. My hubby & I own a tattoo shop and our daughter started learning at age 5. She has since decided to not continue but it was the sweetest thing to share with her. When she was in 4th grade she did a report on the history of tattooing & tattoo machines. My hubby has been tattooing for over 30 years & he’s never tattooed me. He also manufactures machines. This episode was awesome.

The story of the lady whose daughter died broke my heart. I lost my daughter 6 years ago late in my pregnancy. The trauma of that alone who beyond words, let alone then not being able to lay them to rest!! Completely disgraceful, I hope things are a little easier now she knows where she is.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Several months ago I lost my son 36yrs old to the fentynal epidemic after being clean for 5yrs. I'm in ohio and he was back home in Nevada. It was terrible not being able to say goodbye, kiss his head 😢. My daughter was on her way there (from ohio) to help her grandpa get his home health nurse ect set up. My brave strong girl had to identify and get him cremated. My bbf helped her. I can never repay either one for bringing my boy home to me.😢

You should deep dive the mass grave in Canada, Bailey. The remains of more than 1,000 people, mostly children, have been discovered on the grounds of three former residential schools in two Canadian provinces since May. In late June, the remains of 751 people, mainly Indigenous children, were discovered at the site of a former school in the province of Saskatchewan, a Canadian Indigenous group said.

I lost my daughter in a similar way. I remember just wanting to take her home but knowing there was a process and her body had to be released to the funeral home. I remember calling the hospital and them telling me her body was transported to the funeral home and me asking the man 5x was he sure and the calling the funeral home and making sure my baby was okay I had her cremated so she could come home. I’m crying 😢 just thinking about those moments and how devastated I would have been if my baby was just gone and I didn’t know where

I have it open to look at...I'm just gobsmacked that NY ... the 'gleaming city that never sleeps', has no respect for the 'untouchables'... No one gave birth hoping to raise a homeless person. Somewhere their dream was derailed...It is not always entirely their own fault. Sometimes a bitter president, with the morals of a grifter make it impossible to get off the streets, when you're under 18, and both parents were carried off by a completely preventable 'covid19' pandemic....You can't trust the government. WE are the government....Kind of a catch 22...Then you realize nearly 32% of voters in America would continue in the direction of "every man for himself'...If you are weak, or disabled, then it is no fault of theirs if you die...It's Darwinism. I don't want to live by social darwinism. 68% of voting Americans have a strong sense, that if we allow the 38% to rule, we will continue to sink below the Second World Status we are (no national health plan that's viable, millions on the streets, everywhere)... I like to think humans have the same capacity to be empathetic, and compassionate, as monkeys do. When we know better, we do better... Do better New York.

I am so glad you did a Dark History episode on this island. I remember coming across the article mentioning the mass burial in the island. It was my 1st time learning about the mass burials. It was so heartbreaking hearing about the bodies that weren't claimed. RIP to all those people. 😢

It doesn't look like a heart 😅. I think it speaks volumes that inmates who buried the dead are the only ones (so far) who have been able to acknowledg that they are there with a monument. Almost as if the forgotten and marginalised, who have burried the forgotten and marginalised, want them to be remembered.

My twin brothers were buried there. My poor mom has suffered for over 35 years wondering where they were buried. I was able to find out that it was at this island but no specific information.

Thank you. They have a database where you can search names, dates and so forth but they didn’t document where my brothers were buried. It was careless and cruel. They tossed them away like nothing.

Many cemeteries all over the country have many unmarked graves. When I was researching my ancestry, I found that most cemeteries I contacted had my ancestors unmarked. Example: Dunmore Cemetery in Scranton, PA had family headstones, however individual burials from the 1800's & early 1900's had none. Seemed to be a common thing back then.

During times of great loss, (eg: pandemics, epidemics, war etc) they often would just do a family plot stone and not individual markers in many cemeteries. It was more economical for a family who was burying a handful of family members and still allowed people to know they were there, together.

TY Bailey for making my day💕, and for all you do for us all, ur soooo appreciated.😢 In 1986 my Grandma had a blood transfusion and died of Aids by 1989, so a lot of us at least been touched by an epidemic b4 this fkd pandemic. My uncle was sentenced to a life imprisonment at Rikers. He got out due to his extremely bad health and them not wanting to deal with his doctors visits and medication requirements. He talked about his friends on body detail, they're prisoners but they are people. It does affect them badly.

My ex boyfriend was on Rikers as a teenager and on burial detail. In the 70s they had the adolescents do the burials. He described some pretty horrifying sights.

This story reminds me of the Island of Spinalonga near Crete, Greece. The islands has a long history and ended up as the place they would ban people with Leprosy to, hence the nickname of the island, The Island of the Living Dead. I visited the island years ago, it made a lasting impression on me.

Fascinating as ever Bailey. Those poor babies, deceased adults, prisoners who had to work there and last but not least the bereaved. Something like the Ground Zero memorial would be appropriate and a centre truthfully documenting the island's history. Go Melinda!

I think it's because she has a whole team on dark history so it costs more to produce. more people to pay. Whereas on mmm she films herself and has like a couple people I think who help with editing and research.

Thank you so much for doing this episode! I worked the pandemic in NYC from March until May 2020. The hospital I was at had more resources than some of the others. What we experienced is beyond words. We had 11 refrigerated trucks behind our hospital alone, full. We ran out of essential medications to keep people sedated. We ran out of body bags. At peak in NYC, if you were a pulseless trauma of any age or a cardiac arrest from home, EMS was ordered to bring you to the coroner’s office because no hospital would accept you, we didn’t have the beds. The healthcare works I worked along side were incredible. The citizens of New York City never failed to cheer for us at shift change, every night I went into work. I worked COVID in other cities, I spoke to friends who traveled across the country, and we all say that what we experienced in NYC was unlike anything else. The truth needs exposed; what these people went through can’t be swept under the rug. I didn’t learn about the mass graves until I watched the documentary, The First Wave, on Hulu. My mom used to work as a nurse at Bellevue Hospital in the psych ward in the 80s. She was attacked by a patient and had her back broken. She passed in 2020 (not covid related) and we were told the only way to bury her was for her to be buried in Potters Field in a mass grave site since NYC was so overwhelmed with covid deaths. We ended up having her cremated (even though thats not what she wanted) so she wouldnt end up in a mass grave with a bunch of strangers. To make it up to her, I am saving my pennies to take her ashes to Hawaii and sprinkle them there, she loved Hawaii. Coney Island has a pretty interesting history and people have died on the rides over the years. I loved going there when I was a kid.
