I just came to see the "Planet of the Apes" masks being reused for "Lost in Space." Classic Irwin Allen technic. I switched to Star Trek after watching both shows in reruns in the early 1970s. And yes the main character being named "Kirk" added to the appeal of ST.

Hill Street Blues Michael Conrad "Lets be careful out there" and in an earlier episode Daniel J. Travanti, who played Capt. Frank Furillo on Hill Street Blues, would appear as the leader of the space hippies who try to blow up the planet the Robinsons are on in Collision of the Planets

The ape-like makeup was created by makeup artist John Chambers, whose credits include Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, and The Munsters. The makeup design was an early prototype for what would later be used in Planet of the Apes

All of Allen's four sci-fi shows perhaps lacked variable content, however, there was always the imagination of the 1960's that inspired me to keep watching them as a pre-teen then.

This is one of the Best episodes of Season 3. I love Michael Conrad as Creech, I love the mask,. Even the dialogue is funny "your turn to use the RAZOR" "That;s not a Razor that;s old Mordachans pig sticker. He slit three guards throats with it" LOL

One thing that I really enjoyed about Season 3, as I previously mentioned in comments on other review's , was the new theme song. However, it did have its limitations, as I will explain later. AS we know, the theme commenced a few minutes into the show once a dramatic moment occurred. Personally,, this episode illustrated that best with Creech's "So, then you're DEAD!!!" However, with many episodes lacking that sense of danger or urgency, it's use was quite unsuitable.

Only on an alien planet would a 13-year-old Will Robinson be allowed to act as legal counsel for two adults. Gave it his best, though, losing to the instant judge who was involved with "Treasure of the Lost Planet."

Not a bad episode, but I don't understand why the warden introduced Creech to new inmates Don and Dr. Smith, and why Creech said, "Pleased to meet you." Smith and Creech had already met at the radar station and they were all together at the trial, where Smith and Creech spoke to each other.

Episode 15? The Anti Matter Man? That's the GREATEST episode!! I will keep this brief, but I LOVED this show more than any other as a kid. I was just a kid watching those re-runs in the 1970's and there was a magic to it that, all the idiocy which you point out just didn't matter to me. You still make me laugh with your sarcasm, though. Very funny at times. I am looking forward to seeing some more.

Robert Hamner i think wrote 3 or 4 episodes in season 3 including the antimatter man which he co-wrote with Barney Slater but they used a pen name for the episode k.c. allison. Not sure why since it was one of the few episodes that stuck the landing. Hamner also co-wrote one episode of star trek, a taste of Armageddon which is hard to beleive if you think about it. Lol.

I often say, "Funny forgives a world of sins", and, at least the 2nd half of this one lives up to that. But I totally agree with your assessment of Smith. WHO is the REAL villain in this story-- Creech-- or, THE WARDEN? Seems like The Warden to me. Some interesting (maybe) trivia. The guards wear the SAME helmet Werner Klemperer did in season 1. Also, the guards ride the same "bikes" the biker gang did in "Collission Of Planets". It seems to me they must be from the same (so-called) "civilization" out there. But for whatever reason, the Robinsons never seem to be able to find an already-colonized, "civilized" planet-- just these desert things. It's like wandering around the Pacific without ever once reaching Japan, China, or Australia. Funny enough, Daniel J. Travanti AND Michael Conrad were both in these episodes with the "bikes". Further, I checked their IMDB resumes. Tol Avery (The Warden) & Charles Horvath (guard #1) both had long resumes, especially Horvath, BOTH passed away at age 57 (quite a few years apart), and BOTH had bit parts in "HIS KIND OF WOMAN" (1953, one of my favorite films). Avery was also in an episode of "THE THIRD MAN", so he & Jonathan Harris had crossed paths onscreen once before. I'm watching all the "desert planet" episodes as a group, and as stupid as the show is, there does seem more continuity this way. The whole family is away at a "relay station", which is where several of these episodes have them this year, and in "Castles In Space" they also made a big deal about how cold it was. The idea the writing staff KNEW the show was on its way out makes sense. HOW ELSE could they go from "much-better" scripts in the first half, to "as bad or worse than season 2" in the 2nd half? As it happens, since "BATMAN" was no longer on Wednesdays that year, I'd have thought the ratings would have gone UP. I know I was watching every week I was home, and happy not to miss half of some stories because I was no longer watching "BATMAN" that night. Crazy but true: both "LOST IN SPACE" and "GILLIGAN'S ISLAND" ran the same 3 years on CBS, BOTH shows were apparently renewed for 4th seasons, but BOTH got cancelled after-the-fact, so neither cast or crew ever got to have "wrap parties". And yet, "GUNSMOKE", which had been cancelled, was UN-cancelled solely because the wife of the network head liked it. I've only recently seen some of the earlier half-hour episodes, and the show was WAY more watchable, before it expanded to a dull, boring HOUR in the later seasons.

@@dwashbur I just read the other week that Irwin Allen had a talk with the network head about VOYAGE's's 5th season... but Allen wanted to do "LAND OF THE GIANTS" instead. That's always been a big "WTF?" to me. "GIANTS" is like a 5th-rate variation on LIS, and far more limited in scope than either VOYAGE or LIS. But then, the more I read about Irwin Allen, the more it seems he really was a 5-year-old who NEVER GREW up. So, whatever he wanted to do, made sense... TO HIM.

LOL "From the looks of him, he's had more than one accident." Aside from the idiotic scripts, one thing that made the show increasingly difficult to watch was the Robinson's inability to learn from repeated mistakes. The "Smith" character was not really all that unbelievable. I know plenty of people who keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over, and just never learn.

@@dwashbur The Robinson’s were just too nice and decent for their own good!!! But worse than decent, just dumb how they would give him important tasks that he either messed up, or didn’t do it at all! Always getting into something to put everyone in danger. This became the only plot line the show had after a while. Early on, after “Invaders From the Fifth Dimension”, the Robinson’s take a long chariot ride, leaving Don and Smith alone at the ship. When they return, only Don remains!! “Oh, Smith? He said he was sick of this family and decided to move to the other side of the planet”, says Don, (while holding a shovel behind his back)!!! 😈😈😈😈

Okay, BUT... during the 1967-68 season, LOST IN SPACE was still on Wednesday nights at 7:30 PM. STAR TREK's 2nd season was Friday nights at 8:30 PM. I watched BOTH. The only scheduling problem was the year-and-a-half the first half of BATMAN was on right opposite LOST IN SPACE. I used to switch from one to another, missing the first half of one or the other. When they both went into syndication, in Philadelphia, the same channel ran both, so I could watch both. More recently, I got both series on DVD... and decided to schedule the SAME episodes that were on the same nights, the same weeks but on different days. So I was re-living the 60s... but, BETTER!

@@dwashbur It can get spooky when you watch shows from 40 or 50 or more years ago, and realize some writers could actually SEE where the country was heading. "WKRP" did this a LOT... and I believe that was directly connected to why CBS deliberately screwed over its schedule in its 4th season until they lost just enough viewers to CANCEL it. @@dwashbur I BOUGHT the entire series on DVD a couple years ago, and have been repeatedly SHOCKED at how much I've been enjoying so many of them-- as I like to say, "EVEN the REALLY STUPID ones"! I grew up watching this show when it was first-run-- and I swear, I've been enjoying them MORE, now! It's really a shame Irwin Allen insisted on having such a tight death-grip hold on his shows, and that he kept the writing staff SO LIMITED. Imagine what an influx of "real" sci-fi writers might have done for LIS... or VOYAGE!! (I'm early in VOYAGE's 3rd season right now, and when VOYAGE gets stupid, it's painful to sit thru. At least LIS tends to be "fun". "The Terrible Toys" was THE WORST so far... and, tragically, it's said to be one of Irwin Allen's 2 FAVORITES. Aaaaaaugh! "Day Of Evil" was only slightly less-infuriating to sit through.)
