I'm so glad you covered Lost in Translation, one of my all-time favorites. Really captures the mood of cultural dissonance in a realistic and beautiful way.

Finally watched Her last night. What a beautiful movie and Lost in Translation is one of my favorite romance movies and I noticed the kind of common shots between both movies pretty early on and it kind of makes the experience of watching both a little better, especially knowing the background of the two directors. Great episode guys!

I really liked Her. I watched LIT when it first came out and didnt like it, so maybe in light of all your comments will rewatch it.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly/ Great episode btw

Great analysis. Never thought of the 2 as being bookends but your analysis makes that clear. 2 comments about "Lost in Translation" though. 1. you indicated that in pre-production, "obviously this was before cellphones". Not true. Principal photography began on September 29, 2002. In 2002, it's estimated that 49% of the American population had cellphones. It's Bill Murray who most likely didn't have a cellphone. 2. While it's a movie with so many layers, most POC particularly Asians, find the movie rather racist. The depictions of the Japanese with their bad English and their quirky ways is analogous to "Breakfast at Tiffany", but hey at least they're using Asians rather than someone in yellowface. Every culture has their own quirks. If the movie took place in Italy rather than Japan, would Bob be on an Italian game show with scantily clad models, Charlotte being catcalled, while dealing with locals with bad English? What if there was a US version of the movie where foreigners dealt with stereotypical Americans (ie loud, overweight hillbillies)?
