Lost Norwich - Under the Flyover

The Norwich Flyover, constructed in 1971/2, was and still is highly controversial. Part of the city's inner link road, it aimed to improve traffic flow around the city, but as this video shows, its construction swept away numerous buildings and former streets, and effectively split Magdalen Street in two.

Lovely film as ever, it almost unbearably sad again to see what has been lost and what has replaced it. Thank you for your efforts to keep Norwich history alive!

Thank you Andrew for your comment. The city certainly lost some character as a result, but it seems there was considerable congestion at the time and the road was done to relieve that. As you rightly say, I am trying to keep history alive!

Thank you .I remember when the fly over was built and was excited as a child to drive over it for the first time. Sad to see so many old building taken down though. My nan told me about what Barack street was like many years ago. No upstanding lady wood ever be seen on that street.

Very interesting but ultimately very depressing what was lost in the name of "progress". Buildings that had stood for centuries replaced with boring Grey concrete and tarmac.

A lot to take in; I'll probably have to give it a second or third viewing. I have mixed feelings about the buildings demolished to make way for the flyover. Some of them probably had nothing wrong with them but the housing looked in need of improvement. Have you any plans to make a video about the courtyards and alleys in Norwich? The city seems to have a lot of them.

Thanks for your comment Geoff. To date courts and yards have been included in videos about specific locations, but I know that there are many more than those I've covered so far.

It's a tragedy how so many older buildings have been lost. It reinforces the importance of the current laws protecting them, laws that needs to be reinforced rigidly.

I loved seeing the old buildings and streets that were there before the flyover. I never really thought about that area too much before, so I learned a lot from this video. I applaud you for wanting to use the revenue from these videos to replace old plaques around the city, and to fund more. Come on City Council - make this happen!

I know this area well having walked it often over 30 years ago, when the flyover was only 20! It is a tragic illustration of how we destroyed more of our nations heritage by design after the war than the enemy air raids achieved during the war.

In the 1980s I used to visit Jack's Yard in what's now the car park in the corner of St Crispins Rd and Peacock St. It was a warren of hundreds of secondhand doors and windows. The rather beshevelled long-haired proprieters seemed to be stoned most of the time and I remember going there once in the middle of a police raid. I can't remember what happened to it - did it burn down or just get cleared away?

Green’s Lane (continuation of Cherry Lane) was where the composer and child prodigy William Crotch was born in 1775. He was the first principal of the Royal Academy of Music, and probably composer of the Westminster Chimes (Big Ben), I don’t know if there is a blue plaque to him in the area, but there should be…

At 2:40 the shop on the right (Stalks) was John Carmichael Darts and Trophies in the 80’s. Spent many hours in there as a youth and budding Junior Norfolk County darts player (need to do a spotlight on the old Norfolk Darts and Social Club that used to be on Rosary Road) 😉

@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich I have scoured the internet but can find no images of Rosary Road in days gone by that highlight the area. There are images of the gas tower and pub plus the old Nest football ground but nothing in between. If you look at Google Earth the new housing estate built on the old Nest ground, it was in this area the old Norfolk Darts and Social Club sat. The original first Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses is also on the old Nest site

@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich here’s a suggestion John for Lost Norwich; houses of interest. Couple come to mind; Point House at the intersection of Sprowston Road and Magdalene Road and 1 Drayton Road now called John Boag House. This latter home was owned by family friends, the Lovelbadges in the 70’s and I remember going to visit as a boy.
