Lost Odyssey - RPG Time Machine 

Extremely underrated game. I would still put it in my top ten even though I haven't played it in almost a decade.

Ahh yes Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Last Remnant and Blue Dragon. Xbox was killing it with their jrpgs during that time

Lost Odyssey one of the most underrated turned based rpgs ever!! I'll compare to Ghost of Tsushima in terms of not really doing anything super innovative for the gnre it belongs to but but perfectly executing the tropes and being so polished with an amazing presentation that is easily one of the best representatives of classic turned based rpgs. Also, the final boss theme is so... unique, rock music with latin chorus a la bloodborne and then a part that that I can only describe a Satan rapping in Japanese.

This is a great one. I actually played this again on my Series X. Auto HDR helps is a bit graphically. The story & gameplay I still appreciate.

I never played FF so Lost Odyssey was my first RPG and playing on the 360. I loved it!! Super underrated and the voice acting is amazing

I loved reading the Dreams/ stories in the game between chapters. They had some good life lessons in them, but they also got pretty dark. They should rerelease this on Nintendo Switch. Then you can play it in bed and cry yourself to sleep.

oh man I loved Lost Odyssey.. and it still looks pretty good. The models and designs hold up well. I imagine the creator probably didn't like the idea of having to become a massive studio to keep up with modern big budget standards. ...also you gotta do Third Age!

As someone born in 1982 and grew up on Final Fantasy, I bought the 360 strictly because of FF13 being released on the platform. Then I was thrown for a loop with Lost Odyssey came out with Sak & Nobuo at the helm and I realized I my Final Fantasy fandom would swerve to Mistwalker studios with LO & then The Last Story on the Wii. I mean it's obvious in the titles of both games what Sak was doing, and it sucks that he's gone onto only produce mobile games now. Lost Odyssey and Last Story gave me those old Final Fantasy vibes. Thank goodness the "Tales Of" series still gives me what I need out of JRPGs. Can Sega please do anything to make a Skies of Arcadia sequel happen?

I loved Lost Odyssey. The music is just fantastic! Especially "What you are". Just so good

those flashbacks always hit me straight in the feels. just the sheer emotion the writing in those parts evoke is above any jrpg I've played recently

Crazy that at the time reviews hated the written story segments as those are one of the most powerful elements of this title. This is in every sense of the word a Final fantasy game. We would argue it is also one of the best not only of that series, but one of the best JRPGs of all time. Needs more love like this!

Massive Final Fantasy fan since FFVI and I've just bought this game on my Series X, never played it before. I feel like I'm playing a brand new FF game with the old school mechanics I love so much. What a treat.

One of the best, underrated RPGs of all time. The story telling mechanic of past lives was brilliant. MS have a hit on their hands if they revived this.

I remember the first time I played this I didn’t really think too much of it until you meet your daughter in the game and I remember being in tears from how powerful the emotions were. From then on I was hooked and it’s an amazing game, and the ring system was fun, made me think of additions from legend of dragoon

LOTR The third age was an EXCELLANT RPG that certainly gets my vote!

Ah I love this game so much. Probably my favorite rpg of all time most likely due to the memory sections. And of course the soundtrack

This game was awesome. I played it completely through twice. They really need to do a part 2 for this one but I doubt it will happen. It didn't sell enough copies but I think thats because of it only being on Xbox. thats the problem with exclusives sometimes that I dont like. The game still holds up today if you ask me graphic wise and gameplay. Awesome awesome game.

I loved this game! The little mini stories within the game were amazing. The one about the general having plants growing out of his skin messed me up a little when I was younger.

Just started playing it for the 1st time at the start of the month. What a gorgeous game. 😍

There are a couple of things people should be aware of: While a newer JRPG with some nice QoL improvements it has a couple of bad old school issues. 1.) You need to make sure you have multiple save points because you can end up in an area that you are woefully under leveled for with no ability to return. 2.) it has a cool exp scaling system but it prevents crazy over leveling. When you are in a new area or are under leveled you will level real fast. Depending on how badly you are under leveled (no joke, throw away monsters are harder than boss fights. I had to use all of my inventory items to win) you will gain multiple levels per fight. Once you are at the "Correct" level range the EXP drops of suddenly, getting to the point where you are basically getting almost nothing per fight. 3.) The thousand years of dreams scenes are some of the best writing in gaming history. When read within within the game it does an exceptional job in detailing character motivations. You can read them all online, or in youtube videos, but when found within the game and going through the story at the same time the impact is significantly more. 4.) I am not messing around, you need to manage multiple saves. Smart Item use will have you starting a new chapter where the first random encounter will one shot your characters. 5.) The English voice acting is very good. 6.) If you like storytelling, buy this game. He wasn't kidding about the tears bit. You would have to be kick a newborn puppy for fun level of asshole to not get the feels.

Oh man, I can't wait for this. This game is amazing.

I’ve been hoping for a second lost odyssey for years

"Funny" thing about this game was that so far it's been only game that I have needed to boil in water to make it work. One of the discs came in papersleeve and didn't read, so internet offered solution ( so I wasn't the only one with same problem) to put it in boiling water for a moment and that fixed it. Story combined with the soundtrack was a tearjerker.

Loved this game! I rebought the digital versions of this: Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery. I was sad to see no Magna Carta 2 backwards compatible but I hope it will come soon

Thanks for bringing more attention to LO! Though on the Thousand Years of Dreams bit, IIRC, Sarah never got any and that was probably because of her amnesia (which they never cured her off even by the time of the epilogue lol). Which is a huge shame cos I am very intrigued with how she met Kaim and they only decided to actually marry and have a family literally a few decades before their mission deadline! It’s kinda hinted that Sarah was like Gongora, completely focused on the mission at first so she concentrated wholly on understanding magic, because she says Kaim is literally the only man she’s ever loved. And I just wanna know if they’ve met up several times before, or they literally never interacted with each other and fell in love until it was almost too late. Cos there’s an interesting love story in there, like how people feel they meet their soulmates too late in life, and there’s definitely this element of practicality I think with Kaim, because he’s experienced the pain of outliving all his previous wives - this obviously will not be an issue with Sarah. So you wonder, did it never occurred to him before? Did he not meet Sarah before? Is it a case where they needed to grow as people separately for 900+ years and only then they fell in love with each other as the people they grew to become? Did they perhaps don’t normally form couples in their original homeworld and original bodies, so it felt taboo to even have intimate relationships with each other? I wanted to know this badly, because they hinged quite a bit that Kaim became happier and more focused once he got Sarah back and their grandkids is their responsibility. Sarah has zero recollection of who Kaim is, and what their relationship actually is. She is banking on her own journals, and my gawd they must have GLOWING REVIEWS about Kaim as a husband cos Sarah had ZERO hesitance in accepting she’s married to this handsome stranger and that she is a grandma. And it really kills me how unbothered both her and Kaim are about her amnesia. Like yeah, there’s people irl who lost their memories and fall in love with their significant others again; but Sarah lost 1000 years worth of OTHER memories and Kaim doesn’t seem to actually care enough to research a cure or something to help his amnesiac wife? That never sat well with me, I think it was the one lingering thread in Lost Odyssey that keeps me up at night. The Sarah we have in-game, isn’t the original Sarah. She isn’t even the Sarah Kaim married. She is kinda the understudy, who read the script of the original Sarah and has stepped into the role.

I absolutely loved this game and it was emotional, few games are able to make me feel things. From my understanding, the new ecosystem for Unreal and Xbox almost ruined the studio half way through development, they couldn't even play it on actual hardware for testing either since they started before the 360 release. I can see how that would leave a bad taste in Mistwalker Studios mouth. I would love to see a port to something like the switch, but I doubt any sequel would be made. It also had a very good english voice cast, and a few were professional comedians. Not so many JRPGs make you WANT to hear the dub over the original. Not to mention Microsoft hired a Harvard Ph.D. Prof to translate the dialogue, a professor who traditionally translated famous/ancient Japanese literature.

I've now watched all 3 of these consecutively.... I have ADHD and I was making dinner. Leave me alone 😂🤣😂 and I have 3 extremely important takeaways 1. You broke my 💙 when you said jade empire had a sequel planned. That is still one of my favorite games. I remember sitting in my buddy's Harry Potter style closet under the stairs playing jade empire which we rented from blockbuster... wtf 😅 ... all my friends were running around having fun and you couldn't pay me to put that controller down. What a game 😍 2. This may be my new favorite gaming series. The only one I've played out of the ones you've shown is jade empire and now I might have to give the other 2 a go! 3. My favorite part of the series, bar none, not even close... old matty pics... keep em coming 😂 they are wholesome and hysterical. Thanks for all the hard work bud! 😊

2007?! Holy shit man,. Can't believe it's been that long. That was my first year out of high school. thought I was still in high school at the time but I guess not. I remember I bought the game called The last remnant and HATED it so I traded it in and ended up seeing this game and was like well that looks pretty cool. ended up loving the shit out of it.

It has become increasingly more difficult to find turned based RPGs with great storylines like this one. Most people are playing first person shooters now and that doesn't interest me as much. I found this game around 2012. It was a fantastic game with readable stories from the immortals that will bring you to tears. Truly a great game that I didn't realize how much I missed until I saw this video. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Lost odyssey AND battle network? Man we would’ve been good friends as kids!

This video was long overdue. Lost Odyssey is one of the best JRPG ever created, period, and the way it's always been kind of buried still really annoys me. It's like having a Dream Team and dissolving it after winning a couple of world leagues. Not that they don't exist anymore, and they did The Last Story which was really good as well, but you can see how they moved away from that AAA scope. If they kept making JRPGs for major platforms, we would be talking about one of the big boys in the game. As of now, the talent is still there, but come on dude, I'm not buying an iPhone for an exclusive mobile game. Not to diss on mobile games, but... well, I am. Regarding the game, you're spot on on everything. This videogame could do with a 2h video-essay and you would still be leaving stuff out, but this is a nice homage and remembering of a classic masterpiece. One thing I want to point: them going to the mobile market could totally be a money issue. You could say whatever about mobile games, but they do bring the cash, so we could be just seeing some "dark age" or non-public exclusivity deal in order to widen their scope. I know, I'm daydreaming here, but we-ve seen weirder. They're a total of 15 employees as of now, so with what we're seeing with The Initiative for example, could be a reality with this team as well. Who knows.

One of my favorite jrpgs ever.

Sakaguchi hates sequels. It was actually a major point of contention between him and the Square executives shortly before his departure. In the early days of Final Fantasy, there was a sort of implicit agreement that each new game would keep the Final Fantasy name for branding and would have some returning elements, but would otherwise be an entirely original story in a new setting. This has always been his style as a creator. It wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft wanted a sequel and Sakaguchi rejected the offer unless he could start it completely from scratch. Microsoft would have probably been far more risk averse in that scenario than Square in the 80s.

In the same way as Albert Odyssey in the Sega Saturn, this game provides a similar tittle and a party of 5 mechanic to the mix.

There was a cancelled game called Cry On for the 360. I’d also recommend their Wii game The Last Story.

The game is fun! This snake boss who sucks up energies from the insects enemies seems unbeatable. I leveled up to 18 so hopefully that’s enough.

Just got the four disc physical edition for my series x for 8 quid. Was in amazing condition and the manual is fucking fantastic. Great game , old school jrpg greatness. P.s everytime is see Ming I can't help but think she is Katherine Ryans double 🤣🤣

Love this game so much. The first dream you find „Hanna‘s departure“ about a sick girl that can’t leave her hometown made me almost cry when i first play the game in my early 20s. Whole game is such a gem!

Great video, and what a game. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't finished it. I stopped playing for about 2 weeks, and when I played it again, I couldn't remember where to go and what to do. A quest log would've been great... Also, I wouldn't mind a mediocre video about Freedom fighters.

This game never worked on the XBone right? Doesn't work on mine. I loved this game! When my XB360 died I was heart broken. If I could get a new XB360, I'd buy that way before I'd even consider the Series X. Very good video Matty. Edit = I checked and it is playable on the XBone! My disks must be damaged.
