Best playthroughs of any channel, and I watch a lot of them. Excellent balance/timing of rules explanation and gameplay. Remarkable ability to demonstrate different strategies without messing up the rules. Clear speaking voice and a good pace. Top notch.
I have learnt how to play many games via Jon. He makes sure his playthroughs illustrate the game perfectly including many nuances and subtleties not covered on other channels. Simply the best.
I’ve watched 3 tutorials on this game and still felt confused. This was an amazing explanation, wow. It all just clicked watching this. The way you present the concept, the overall premise and goals, and then the rules paired with a playthrough, it’s so clear. Thank you!!
Buddy got this and I immediately looked to see if you had this video then shared it with the group for a great teaching resource. A great game that I really enjoy. Thanks Jon
I always like it when worker placement games have a deckbuilding element to them, gives it a lot of replayability and also some asymmetry between players as they start diverging in tactics based on how they build their decks. Excellent work as always on this playthrough.
Display through was so well done. I’ve been playing this game on board game arena and then bought it but still had no idea of all of the intricacies. And now, it’s not all that hard. Thank you so much for an excellent excellent tutorial and play through
I just received this game as birthday present. Since I had no idea how to play it, I watched a lot of videos explaining how to play it but none -and I mean NONE- were as useful as yours. You perfectly explained everything and I'm literally ready to play it. So, I'll have fun with friends and you sir, got a new sub.
I love your efficient and thorough approach to game board tutorials. And they're engaging! I watched this whole tutorial even though I knew somewhat early on that this is a game I'm not super interested in. Thank you, Jon!
Altho there are many rules channels that explain the rules just as well, it is the full and partial playthroughs that are most useful as you ca nse the rule interpretations in action. Invaluable resource. I just wish this was a full playthrough. Just cos I love your videos.
Excellent playthrough, Jon. I'm really looking forward to get this game. Will play it mostly solo, but as far as I've heard the solo variant is pretty good.
Definitely one of the newer games I'm most looking forward to, along with Hallertau and Anno 1800. I've never missed your full playthroughs more, even though this is a game where you didn't really _need_ to show any later rounds. It's just more of the same, though that's not a bad thing. My overall impression of Arnak is that it doesn't do a whole lot that is very new, but what it does it does very well. The one thing that is innovative and nice is the item/artifact distinction, it makes deckbuilding have meaning even in the later stages of the game. Also, new items go effectively on _top_ of the cards you discard, so you are guaranteed to see them much sooner. That's also really nice.
This was a really great tutorial. Your speech was clear and not rushed which allowed me to concentrate on learning the game. Cutting away between turns instead of pondering over your moves with a lot of mumbling was pro. I've been on the fence about purchasing this game, and thought to play through a few times on Board Game Arena prior to buying. This left me with the issue of learning the rules without having them in front of me. You absolutely solved this issue for me. I'll subscribe and hope to utilize another tutorial in the future. Thanks!
I just bought this yesterday, and was so happy to see that you had a video. I love your playthroughs, I learned Merlin from watching you as well. Would love to see a playthrough for Catan Starfarers.
Played this at my gaming group the same night I watched this video. I really enjoyed it and would play it again, although it's not quite up there on my 'must buy' list yet. You're video really helped me get to grips with the gameplay :D
I used to do full playthroughs, but had to stop due to the huge amount of time they took. I'm glad you enjoyed what you saw, I highly recommend this game.
Many thanks for this explanation. We did try to wade through the rules in our first game but that didnt work so this is great for our nexr game when I can play this video and have a good chance we can get most things right.
Great vid as always. I was going to pass on this one, but you've certainly piqued my interest and I will probably pick it up if I see it somewhere in the future.
I've played Arnak and Endless Winter, but not Duner: Imperium yet. Arnak is way better. Endless Winter is too crunchy, the downtime between turns in a 4p game was absolutely brutal.
Around 55:35, when the archeologists gets returned using the ocarina, shouldn't the red player get a fear card, as the guardian spider was still on the site? You didn't issue them a fear card, so I guess not, but I thought I'd ask for a clarification. Are fear cards received only when archeologists return to base at the end of a round?
I believe Archeologists only gain a fear when returned at the end of the round. Since this was mid-round I do not believe they should have gained one fear.
God help me, this is my first Euro and I'm trying to play the solo variant. I was pulled in by the theme and how wonderful everything looks. After watching some reviews and reading the rules I figured I'd set up the board and give it a go. Uhmm .....should I just spend all of my funding cards to buy a card or dig at a starting sight or explore further up the board? Once I do one of these things then round one is over and there are only four more rounds left huh? As I said I've never played a game like this but with the help of your video and some perseverance I'm hoping to become proficient at this gorgeous game. Anyhow, thanks for the video and wish me luck.🙂
Wait. You can get the revolver and just pay only one exploration token to take out a guardian? And this can be used repeatedly? At 5VP a guardian, sounds overpowered.
It can be used multiple times, but the game is only 5 rounds long and there is no guarantee you'll get it in your hand even that many times. It's a good card, but there are tons of good cards to choose from.
I want to like this but I feel like too many games are going the way of worker placement these days. Been thinking about getting raccoon tycoon next. Jon. What is your opinion on playing gloom haven. Is it your favorite like so many others or is it just another game. Is it the go to game for you. Have you heard about aliens another day in the core. That’s a game I’m looking forward to. Also ohanami.
I was pretty disappointed by my one play of Racoon Tycoon, though many people enjoy it. I loved my 30+ plays of Gloomhaven but we haven't played it in years now and it's unlikely we will ever complete the campaign. I don't know anything about the other games you mentioned.
Hmm.. Am I the only one around here who is not impressed? Yes, it has a very appealing graphics, but the core is just a mix of deckbuilding and a simple euro, without surprises. Am I wrong? What's the killer features of the game I missed? Very nice introduction to the game, as always, tho.
I liked the way many cards have immediate impacts on the game, and it's also pretty crunchy when it comes to resource management. You spend lots of things in lots of ways so it's a game that heavily utilizes the planning part of your brain. I wouldn't say there's anything revolutionary here, but it does come together as a fun game from my experience.
also at 45:30 red plays an item (main action) which allows them to discover a site, they then dig at the site on the same turn, is that not 2 main actions? ( i get my first comment worked because the artifact allowed them to research)
Hello Jon, now I'm mega super confused. Well you took 2 actions with the green player by placing both workers and then you did a "purchase card action" so this is a 3rd action. Is that against the rules? You have to perform only 2 actions?! Thanks
You can take far more than 2 actions per round, the only limitation with workers is taking up to 2 worker placement actions on the board. Purchasing a card does not cost a worker.
@JonGetsGames thank you so much for the response. I've also figured myself as I was playing the game wrong. I didn't catch the entire sequence of turn/round.
Huh, I see that. I didn't notice anything unusual about the cards, I guess I accidentally pressed on it pretty hard there. They seem like the quality I'd expect.
It’s so hard to watch this one because you chose to play as green when red was a choice. I might be misremembering, but I thought you were like me and went for red whenever available.
Ha, yeah in general I do. Red and Purple are my preferred colors when playing but I'm now making an effort to change that up in my videos. I remember someone in a live Q&A mentioned they always play green and wished I'd play other colors sometimes so I'm trying to do that more.
@@JonGetsGames yeah, I get that. I was getting the connection because you were using "my" player color, but other people were missing out. It's a little thing, but a good way to take care of your audience. Thanks again for all the videos.
When you use the idols to get a resource you don't get the points covered. If the slots are unused at the end of the game, then you get the points. Rulebook page 11.
@@thegametrainer9004 This is the new type of video I do where I make the tutorial but I don't do the full playthrough. In this video I only played 2/5th of the game.
