I have two grown sons. And I actually do love them in different ways. I have very different feelings about them. But I love both of them. And not one more, or less, than the other.

Unless a TV show is based of a book or other source material then of course the writers don't have the whole overall story and details planned out. The writers didn't know if the show would last 1 season or 10. After season 3 the writers made ABC commit to # of season and episode left so the writers could begin to set up the end game and to answers some of the mysteries they had set up. (that's why the # of episodes per season went from 24 per with filler to 16 with no filler episodes) Generally writers focus on the season at hand because answers for next season may never come because it might not be renewed

I think they had most of the broad strokes in mind, but came up with many of the details (and according to some of their interviews, changed details they had originally intended because of problems in getting those ideas into production) as the seasons progressed.

The idea for lost was by a guy fired by ABC. The idea was broadened by jj Abrams but then he turned it over to damon liddleloff who then brought in Carlton cuse. The point is there is no way LOST could have been broadly planned from the start. And even when the final show runners were in place they still had meeting with other writers and producers to give us what we got.

@@msto1987 *Lindelof The issue is not an easy "this or that" - they had lots of ideas very early on, but nothing was set in stone. Ton of plotlines and characters were developed and created along the way, but the overall framework existed early on.

Not to be argumentative, but to think that when jj handed it over to damon he knew it would go from a survivor show drama, to a mystery show drama to a sci fi time traveling drama to a faith/supernatural drama. They never thought it cuz if they pitched "this is how our story will unfold" the show would never have been green lighted. They adapted as they went, set up threads that they may or may not come back to along the way. But if you leave a breadcrumb in s2 that doesn't mean u have the answer for said breadcrumb at that time. Sometimes, maybe but most of the time.. unlikely.

@@msto1987 JJ never even handed it over to Damon in the first place. They were hired at the same time and Damon was the one who did the writing. JJ (and folks like Pinkner and Alexander) contributed ideas and gave feedback. Together they came up with ideas that the island was moving, that there were scientists on the island, that the survivors were brought to the island for a game between good and evil and all that stuff, but it wasn't fleshed out. Jacob didn't exist until season 3.

There seems to have been various cultural influences from people coming to the island over the years. Not sure about the people that MIB originally bonded with, but somewhere along the line there were influences from Egypt (the statue and use of heiroglyphs) and the Romans (the "Hostiles"/"Others" still using Latin as their secret language). I don't specifically recall if other cultural influences were shown during the show's run.

the best theroy ive heard of why the MIB became smoke was because of the clashing of two rules "rules that cannot be broken". Rule 1: Jacob and the MIB cant kill each other. Rule 2: No one can enter the light at the heart of the island without dying. so the fact that Jacob killed him using the light ment that he had to die but could not at the same time so the island compensated and made him this alive/dead being

He couldn't kill Jacob by himself because "Mother" made the rule that they couldn't hurt each other, and her "rules" were still in order.

15:20 About the smoke monster, early on... rmbr in E1 we saw him kill the pilot? Then soon after, he took on the form of Christian. So yes, the writers planned him from the start.

Mother was just trying to knock him out. Not kill him. She needed time to go destroy those villagers, so they couldn't leave and expose the island to the world. (In a nutshell) And yep, mother was the previous smoke monster. 👍

@@bill.godwin-austen I don't know... but she had other "magical powers" like establishing that Jacob and the MiB can't hurt each other. The MiB couldn't be stabbed. He's a smoke monster. Mother could be stabbed - seems more like she's as human as Jacob, who could also be stabbed just fine. Was she a smoke monster? I don't know. I'm not gonna rule it out, but people posting their speculation as if it's facts... just annoying.

@@kuhpunkt no not really. Study it more. Also, it was either Damon or Carlton... but one of them actually confirmed this in an interview.
