Lost Sega Spartan Console - After The Dreamcast 

Even if it will be sold independently, the capability of playing all past and latest sega video games will definitely make me buy it

Sega please make it happen, make A Dreamcast mini or a Saturn mini, they will sell 100%

Considering how long Samsung has been Sega's main hardware manufacturer, I'm surprised Samsung hasn't pitched a console and asked if Sega was interested in becoming a subsidiary or partner in some way. Samsung has the deep pockets to make it happen.

As a lover and enthusiastic Sega lad I honestly never knew this was going to happen. Such a sad ending to Sega. Honestly the Dream cast was AMAZING. shenmue, Toy Commander, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, MSR, Sonic Adventure etc was all amazing!!!

Ironically I think Spartan could of been a success considering it was around the mid 2000's that we saw the introducing of the Yakuza series and Persona 3 and 4.

It’s kinda weird the way they went with that whole design that looked more fitting to an xbox than a sega product. These days all these retro consoles that come out tend to mostly be rehashed emulator boxes. Fine for people that collect them I guess, but it doesn’t satisfy my nostalgia enough to fill my apartment with them. It would probably have to be designed well and share modern tech that is used in something like their arcade machines to make it worthwhile.

I remember asking them in the forum for a 6 Button controller…. It was clear this will never be official, but it would be nice to have „something Sega“.

Looks like the last post was 2021. It went a redesign. I'm thinking it might be still coming. Though last two yrs nothing. I'm guessing it went silent again for redesign.

Always liked Sega but never a sonic fan. Had the master system, mega drive, and dream cast. But when ps2 came out it was all out the door.

See I don't think it's entirely out of the picture to believe Sega would re-join the hardware market. In the last few years, they've seen moderate success with the Sega Genesis Mini, enough to make a Genesis Mini 2 last year, & also produced a Game Gear Mini line only in Japan which too saw some success. From insiders or just people close to Sega reps, they intend on making more Mini consoles however the price of the items needed for a Sega Dreamcast Mini would be too large, & the Sega Saturn is still very hard to emulate. Probably the best reason to believe they may re-enter the market is Sega Next-Generation, a project that has been going since at least last year & one they've talked to outlets like VG247 about how this project goes beyond just a videogame or videogame collection, although they were vague about what they meant by that & the recent trailer they put out for Sega Next-Generation during the Game Awards remained vague too. This could really mean they plan on turning this project into a console that's a hub for all new & retro games from Sega's prior catalogue, & from 3rd parties, however they state they estimate it will be finished some time before March of 2026 which gives us a large wait time till we see it's release. Still, I wouldn't rule out the concept of Sega re-entering the console market. If Atari & Intellivision can, I believe Sega (a much larger brand then both) could absolutely return in full force!

It's somewhat unfair to call this a Sega console, it's a fly by night trading on a reputation they had no right to.

Sad part was the Dreamcast was still successful in the US and would've likely taken 2nd in sales if Sega of Japan didn’t pull the plug.

It piques my interest because of the latest "power surge reveal" Sega did at the Game Awards. A new console to play all the new games they showcased would be a brilliant business move in my opinion. Not to mention all the IP's and licensing rights they've been snapping up lately, they could knock it outta the park if they had a console that was focused more on physical media and keep the prices down

This all forgets the fact that the very hardware teams that existed, including the arcade cabinet division have either been spun off (arcade division) or folded (console division) and in some cases even wholesale teams such as 2K Sports have been sold off, it''s best off that Sega sticks to making games, or that they merge arguably with Nintendo... which is where they fit.

I can't imagine sega actually approving and making this as an official product. They were in the console market for years. They know the systems make no money and they need to rely on software. So they are now just a software company, why would they get back into the console market where they have to compete with Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony? I do not see this becoming an official sega product. Either these guys gave up on this project or Sega sent them a cease and desist letter...

This was some kind of Home Project years ago of some little team and had nothing to do with Sega except them saying they want to get more information about it.

I worked at a game store during the rise of Genesis and death of SEGA and what killed SEGA was: 1) Releasing a CD-ROM system that utilized the Genesis. Customers got nothing but FMV games that were grainy and in a small window because it uses the Genesis OR got a non-FMV game that looked exactly like a Genesis game but had CD-ROM sound. Waste of money. 2) Then they decided to release the 32-X which again also plugged into the Genesis and had no third party support because at the same time the Saturn was released in Japan so developers were focused on that. The rush with its release lead to crappy games that looked no better than Genesis as they didn't fully utilize the 32-X hardware. Once again a waste of money. That's strike 2. 3) After spending money on 32-X and seeing no real benefit or game support, a year later they release the Saturn in the US which had a few cool titles, but just not enough games as it was also hard to develop for and lacked a lot of necessary third-party support. That was it for SEGA's customers at my store. SEGA finally then got it right with Dreamcast which was outstanding and had some of the best titles a system launch ever had, but unfortunately it was too late as customers moved on after being burned three times in a row. SEGA doing the SEGA-CD add-on was an ok fine, nice try, even though it sucked, but many were willing to look past that. But they killed their customers with that 32-X release cause that then setup the Saturn for the three count death on SEGA. If they had gone from SEGA-CD to Saturn to Dreamcast, I think they might be still making consoles today. Sucks

Sega could come back as a console that’s also a “Gaming computer” and merge both players and markets into it. I would be a hunted console that off market and brands are putting out also. If they could return they would have to have IPs worth it that are slept on.

Sega can make a come back if they make a Wii U type handheld system with all the retro Sega games and new exclusive stuff and I belive it sells.

I never realized this THIS is how business is done. With this in mind, I am creating the Commodore Amiga 15000 group, which means that Commodore will resurrect, and this new computer, which will have 20K holographic resolution and orchestral sound, along with the copper8000, and new custom chips that allow you to play any game ever made in 20K holograms. And it will happen, just because I create a group... can't wait!

Imagine if Sega was able to release the Spartan console, Sega would've still been around today with more subsequent consoles to compete with the PS5 & Series X. So sad that Sega isnt making consoles anymore.

It's not a bad idea. All that back catalogue being available is great and depending on the deal with Sega it could almost be a win win for them. It would be good to see new AM2 type games. A return of the Virtua series. Shorter games that cost less.

My 2 cents: an actual new console, sporting its own hardware, would be a bad idea for everyone involved. Both Sony and Microsoft sell the PS5 and XSX at a loss, so if they want it to be anything other than a niche product, they'll have to rely on their game sales balancing the hardware loss, or assemble something with much cheaper parts, much like Nintendo does. As "newcomers" to the market, they'll have to work out deals to ensure that desirable games are available on the new console. 3rd parties will always consider the size of a potential audience vs. an existing one (PC, PS4-5, Switch), plus the tooling to create and test their games. For consumers, it's yet another console many people won't get because they already have "something else", possibly creating further fragmentation. As is, a Dreamcast/Saturn combo mini would possibly sell well. Making a portable version similar to Switch or Steam Deck would probably sell even better. Regarding the arcade games Sega's been pumping out after the Dreamcast, the majority of their boards were pretty much PCs: the Lindbergh (2005-8) sported a Pentium 4 with a GeForce 6800 + MontaVista Linux, the RingEdge (2009-15) uses Pentium DualCore and GeForce 8800 + Windows Embedded. Porting most of their stuff to PC shouldn't be too hard. Given this, I would also fully expect any possible console from Sega to be just another PC

No point Sega ever releasing a console unless they know how to protect it. The Dreamcast was technically superior in its day but its library fell flat after year 1.

Unfortunately Sega closed down their game centers last year but they are still making arcade games so they have that on top of just making games.

As much as I'd love a return to the hardware market for Sega, I just don't see it making financial sense for them. That Spartan console looked pretty bad though, like something that Soulja Boy would churn out.

I haven't bought a Gaming console since N64. My friends gifted me Xbox one and the fat boy PS3 was free. I would definitely buy the Spartan console if they released it. I love playing old games.

Considering they expected their controller to pull 50 hours of gameplay, I'd say this was doomed from the jump.

I think Sega should come out with a console with a digital store that allows fans to purchase games from all there consoles from the past. Master system Genisis Sega cd Sega 32x Saturn Dreamcast Gamegear Indy games I think it would do well. Add a lot of never before avail games in North America with translations. All 3 scenarios of Shinning force 3 for and example

As a former owner of every system sega has ever made, I pray they make this happen, I never liked x box & PlayStation is mostly only enjoyable when you pay to play, if they do come back I hope they have free online play & a solid boxing game, ps made us wait thru a whole next gen console for undisputed, sega would never do that.

I wish sega would release more games to IOS esp puzzle games, pinball, flying/driving, shooters, and RPGS.

Hmm… never heard of the Sega Spartan. Sega doesn’t need to compete with the big guys technology wise. This sounds a lot like what I thought Sega should release. The only thing I would add is the system should be black and blue instead of black and red (Sega Blue) and make it easy to upload home brew/licensed games to your system through usb. I mean there are the Kinhank emulation android consoles, nvidia shield, Xbox Emulation, Rasberry Pi… not the same though.

Me as a sega fan understands the void that was left when the Dreamcast was discontinued, BUT this project is merely an emulation station, it would be actually more interesting buy one of those fpga consoles or even better: buy the actual consoles one by one.

A lot of people don't realize that SEGA are still making hardware. The majority of arcade machines are now powered by SEGA hardware. So if they're making the majority of the worlds arcade machines, why aren't they making home consoles? Because Arcade hardware is far more advanced than any home console. Imagine working for a company that build rocket ships for NASA, and then that company having a small arm to make toy rockets for kids. Not gonna happen. The same logic applies at SEGA.

How do you do something with crowd feedback but not Sega feedback, let alone their license? Is the idea to pitch it or just try to sell it without them suing? Changing the controller so radically is a red flag, too. This just seems like taking advantage of Sega fans, even if they said it was self funded, it sure as hell wasn't Sega funded.

It was the US Division that destroyed the Saturn and they f.up so many times! Let the JP Sega Division do the Work! And Localise all the JP games!

That doesn't sound exactly like an actual console but rather likely smelling like the old Steam machines and I'm guessing they were simply trying to like maybe just buy old PC cheap parts to make it which they can buy in thousands from China used or old stock and then emulate the old games like we can do for free on almost any device including your crap smartphone... I actually had way more hope for Slightly Mad Studios game console than that, their vision was pretty crazy with the controller having a huge touch screen looking a lot like OLED on their concept pictures and would change depending on the game or app like including a Qwerty keyboard to type, car tachometer when playing a racing game to showing extra game data for other types of game which was a nice concept which I thought Playstation 5 would follow but sadly kept the same old touch pad ☹ Also their console looked a lot like something made from the old Alienware and also included a full front big screen with extra game info and other stuff which was also a damn amazing concept. ps: Sadly it was shoved into the darkness and will never be a real thing or maybe we could have had a 3rd home console player that if they had the highest end hardware like they wanted and depending on games and price if they succeeded maybe both Sony and M$ couldn't ever have increased their subscription prices at least to play multiplayer only and maybe not also increased current gen game prices, who knows... (Nintendo at least for now I consider something apart from the home console market...).

A little SBC (like an Orange Pi 5) will play any Sega console at full speed through emulation. Unless officially sanctioned by Sega, what would be the actually point of something like this? Sorry, fake or not, the concept is lost on me.

Why would sega want to, hardware is high risk with low returns. Sony came in and dominated the scene for two Console generations. Microsoft gave sega a out, so they sold their hardware division to Microsoft along with all the follow up plans for the dreamcast2 that is why the original xbox controller looked so similar to the dreamcast controllers. New sega hardware just does not make sense.

I love Sega but don’t see the point in them moving back into the hardware market. It’s more about software. Hardware is just the machine to play it on. And they’re all fairly similar. Look at the Xbox Series X and PS5 - very similar underlying architecture and the games, barring some very tiny differences occasionally look the same on both platforms. You need partners to make your hardware, and these days they all tend to turn to the same people, so I think any new Sega machine would be similar to the competition. You need something inviting to code for, not some weird left field thing that might be cool but not attractive for developers. Best Sega stay out of it. They don’t have deep enough pockets to compete, and even Sony and Microsoft struggle to make money on hardware, but they can weather it. No point diluting the hardware market any further. Love Sega, had every machine and used to import them to get my hands on them early, but they should just stick to software - that’s better for their long term future.
