Lost Track of His Own Lies: The Murders of Alan and Carla Rutherford [True Crime Documentary] 

This is our 100th video here on JTL and we couldn’t be more excited! This case takes us back to our roots in Canada and specifically to where I grew up, Hamilton Ontario. Thank you to everyone that has been supporting us these past couple years and helped us get to this point. I don’t ask often but I thought It would be fun to see if we can get over 10,000 likes on this video. Man. He was burned over 90% of his body and still tried to go back in to rescue his wife and their dogs. That just hits so hard.

This crime was horrific. And the fact that he held the door closed so they couldn't get out - truly evil!

I hope the mum never found out before smoke took her over - that it was her son. I have no words for this man.

The operator trying to get the exact number was ridiculous. Was it 5? It’s the fucking house on fire. Forget the number. Follow the smoke.

Killing your mom and stepdad just to be able to go out to eat is INSANE !

So he killed his mum and step dad because he wracked up debts with his fast food addiction? That is bad enough, but the way he did it, was absolutely brutal and cowardly. How could he burn his mum alive in bed? What a monster he is.

I'm a doctor who works in the ED. When I first saw the footage of him limping with the cane I knew it was an act. He leaned on the cane with each left stride, suggesting a left sided injury. But the small abrasion which he kept rubbing during the interview was on his right knee.

How unbelievably heinous to kill your parents, in one of the most horrifying ways, for literally fast food... I'm not saying there is ever a reason, but this, it just doesn't get any lower.

What a heartless monster…to kill his own mother and his stepfather. He should rot in jail. No parole.

oh my Lord, opening your door to see your neighbor burned beyond recognition. how horrific. What an awful awful thing for her and her poor neighbor, Al. Incomprehensible. The pride and the love of $. Now his parents are dead, he will spend the rest of his life in prison and his children will know their dad killed their grandparents. SMH.

Im Canadian, and ive never heard of this case......its shocking that someone could do this to their own mother, because they enjoyed Timmies too much. Shocking and depraved.

This man's poor children lost a set of grandparents, & their father, & their home. Thank goodness their mother has some sense. She's a strong, smart woman, so I believe she'll do the best she can for them.

I'm guessing the cops knew immediately he was lying when he claimed to have such a bad knee injury that he couldn't drive, couldn't walk, couldn't sleep in the same bed as his wife, and then described carrying a sleeping child up the stairs as his alibi.

The investigator says sarcastically:"Al killed your mom, and accidently killed himself, and then blames you?" Rich:"I'm saying its a possibiliy.".

As a Hamilton native, I really appreciate you covering this case. Such a senseless and horrific crime.

The panic he must've felt when he learned that not only had his stepfather survived, he spent his final waking moments tell anyone that would listen exactly who murdered him and his wife.

I just cannot fathom what amount of money, could make a son/daughter. Want to kill their parent 😢. It's truly heartbreaking that greed can cause someone to become so EVIL AND SELFISH!!! God bless the family that has to deal with such a truly heinous act of EVIL🙏❤. I PRAY that this family can somehow find some sort of peace😢💔🙏❤

Hi Kevin. Do you think you could please do a video about my hometown murder case. I went to HS with guys that murdered multiple people in a robbery and weren't caught until years later. Browns Chicken massacre in Palatine Il. The shock in this community has never subsided from this massacre and the fact that it was people we knew from HS.

Just unthinkable to do that to anyone because you’re too lazy to run your own life. His mother and step father died horribly yet this guy still only worries about himself. And the poor neighbour also

I was in a bad house fire nearly three years ago, also in my bedroom, when I woke up literally alight. I was given midazolam by the paramedics before I was airlifted to hospital with third degree burns to 25% of my body, and spent four months on a burn ward. I was interviewed later at the hospital by the police, but due to the amnesiac effects of the midazolam sedative, which stops new memories from forming, I don’t have any clear recollection of what happened from a few moments after I woke up on fire, to some time probably two or three days later. I’m not sure of what I said to the police officer; correction: I do have a vague memory of thinking that I was on a swing in a nondescript park, swinging backwards and forwards, as a policeman with no face asked me questions! This might’ve been a dream, or I was completely off my head on the medication! But my point is, I certainly wouldn’t trust anything I said whilst I was still under the influence of the drugs I’d been administered. (Eventually it was proven that the fire had started due to an electrical fault.) However, in Alan’s case his statement at the scene should, I think, be believed. It was given before he received any treatment from the paramedics that could’ve clouded the validity of his declaration. With the amount of adrenaline in his system, I’m pretty sure he would’ve been hyper aware of what he had seen, and who was responsible.

I've never heard of this case and I'm appalled at the criminal audacity of that pathetic excuse for a man.

Great video Kevin! Btw, a huge red flag that I immediately noticed in his first police interview is that he walks with his cane on the wrong side!! As someone who has undergone many orthopaedic surgeries, I know that you use your cane on the opposite side of your injury. It’s basic physics to help keep your balance. This guy used his cane on the right side, the same as his “injury “. He’s not only dispicable, but also stupid.

I don’t live too far from where this happened and never heard this case before. You didn’t a great job of covering it with much respect to the victims. What kind of monster is capable of doing this? We need tougher laws in this country.

In case anyone is wondering (which I highly doubt) how Alan’s hearsay testimony was admitted, here it is. Under English common law an exception to the hearsay prohibition (among many other exceptions that tend to swallow up the rule) is the “dying declaration.” In order to invoke this exception the statement must be made at or near the time of death; the statement must address a matter associated with the cause of death; and finally, the declarant must have died from that cause.

Kevin, you are my absolute favourite. I particularly enjoyed todays episode since it happened not to far from me. Thank you for highlighting this tragic tale.

Thank you for your excellent coverage as always, Kevin. What an utterly tragic case. I'm in the UK but my cousin has only recently moved from Oakville after living there for many years.

The thought of doing such a thing to one's worst enemy is horrific....but to brutally murder his own mom, after all the years of sacrifice on his behalf! (Just think of the shock of all the parents who entrusted him to teach their children....Wow!)

What a cold and heinous crime. And I can’t imagine spending that amount of money on fast food! Going to Tim Hortons multiple times a day for years is crazy.
