The Lost Turkey Trail is a 26 mile linear trail located in south-central Pennsylvania. The eastern trailhead is located in Blue Knob State Park while the western trailhead is located along Route 56 in Gallitzin State Forest. Shortly after the eastern trail head, the trail crosses the top of Blue Knob making it the highest point of any backpacking trail in PA at 3,034 ft. The trail is marked sporadically with mile marks. In Blue Knob State Park the trail is marked with red blazes which seem to be replaced with orange blazes once the trail reaches Gallitzin State Forest. Blazing can be very inconsistent and sparse especially on the western section so hikers must be very diligent to stay on trail.
On the eastern section, the trail shifts between following hollows to ridge top sections. In the hollows, stinging nettle is abundant so pants are definitely recommended in warmer months. The western section is mostly flat as the trail traverses the plateau. The western section has a lot of road walking and boggy sections towards the end. There is a shelter located approximately 3 miles from the western trail head. This shelter has some benches and a picnic table and is first come first serve. Campsites are extremely limited on this trail. If you find yourself in the area, we'd recommend hiking the John P Saylor Trail instead. The Saylor is a 17 mile loop and has a lot more to offer hikers than the Lost Turkey in our opinion.

Excellent video! I did the Rock N The Knob trail race there and it’s a beautiful area. Very scenic and challenging.

The section you came through on the switchbacks on the ascent is actually a piece of private land that cuts through the lost turkey trail. Usually it’s mowed and pretty decent grass through that section. You can always tell by the 4 wheeler/side by side tracks that run through it because it’s private land. I know that area well. I used to work for that property. I’ve seen some crazy stuff on that mountain. The private section is around mile marker 13. Also it was freshly marked this past year.

That's good to here they reblazed it. I felt bad for the trail runners who were supposed to run through all that the next weekend.

The banter between you two is great. I hope to see Dave in more future videos. I've cable crossings like that in SGL 211, but the upper cable is much higher making it less awkward

Thanks for the positive feedback Gabe! I'm hopeful Dave and I can get out on a trip this fall.

Always Yield to Snow-Cats in the Wilderness. That's my #1 Rule lol. Way to tough it out - that trail didn't have much going for it... H

Thanks! I'd recommend the John P Saylor Trail instead if you haven't done it. Much nicer hike and a loop which makes it nice. Happy hiking!

@@vistaventures1343 Did the Saylor loop last winter as well as the Ridge Loop that's off of the Saylor loop. Have also combined the 2 of them. My son an I did the Ridge Loop last spring. Did the loop cc wise which gives a nice good effort climb up the ridge. No switch backs. When we approached the shelter we startled a guy that was sunning most of himself. Awkward hiking moment

I was looking at the trail map today. And we decided to only do a portion of the trail this week. From Babcock picnic area to either skyline drive or to Rt 869. It appears there are areas to park along both of those roads. Looks like skyline would afford us about 10 miles. Which we could extend by parking A little further down on 56 and jumping on the Saylor trail back to the Babcock picnic area. That would give us maybe close to 14 miles. It looks like going from Babcock to burnt House picnic area off of 869 and give us pretty much the same distance solid 15 anyway. If you were doing this which way would you hike it. Start at Babcock? Or start at the other end and hike back to Babcock?

Red trails are notoriously underblazed; we’ve experienced that a lot in Tioga State Forest

Yeah this trail is probably the worst blazed trail I've run across.

@@vistaventures1343 For sure. Really enjoying your videos. Just watched the Golden Eagle Trail. We are retired and bought a house in Tioga County 2 years ago and spend a lot of time up there

@@vistaventures1343 For sure. Hiked out to Sand Run Falls via the Mid-State Trail on Tuesday. Also did a triathlon at Hills Creek State Park last Saturday. I turned 69 on 9/4; blessed to still be out there!

I'm sorry the trail wasn't kept up better. I (Shirley Stauffer Redekop) was part of the YCC (Youth Conservation Corps) who built (and named) the trail over 40 years ago. We had built the bridges but I guess not many lasted. The cable lines weren't there. We were the first group to hike it too. We lived in the State Park for the summers. Thanks for the memories

That's awesome that you were a member of the YCC who built and named this trail! We have tremendous respect for the folks who carved out these trails that we enjoy and those who continue to maintain them. Thanks for the work you put into this trail!

Unfortunately, in PA state forests all multi-use trails are blazed red. At least there were signs to tip you off. You should try it at a junction of 4 red blazed trails and no signage. Great video, congrats on the PR.

It stinks that the makings ended up being less organized. Can't help but wonder if they cleaned any of that up for the race. I haven't seen a cable bridge like that since summer camp as a kid. Great video thanks for sharing.

Because I want to do all the PA State Forest recognized trails, I will eventually do this. I want to somehow figure out how to overnight it. I know there's a lot of State Gamelands that make that hard. What mile did State Forest land start?
@vistaventures1343
@vistaventures1343 Год назад
Hello Brian. If you download the public use map for Gallitzin State Forest you can see where the State Forest land starts where you come out to Skyline Drive. I'm not sure the mileage but would guess around 20ish. Happy hiking!

26 miles “day hike”. Wow. Not me buddy. That’s two days at least. MORE POWER TO YA! What kind of elevation gain on this?
@vistaventures1343
@vistaventures1343 5 лет назад
Hello. The elevation gain wasn't too bad. About 3,500ft. Yeah this certainly wasn't a "normal" hike for us. Just wanted to challenge ourselves to see if we could pull it off. Thanks for watching!
