Lost WINTER Survival Challenge (NO Food, NO Water, NO Shelter!) | Knife, Saw, Axe, Wire, Rope

I test my survival skills in the Canadian forest to survive with just the things I carry in my small backpack. I'll survive with just a knife, saw, axe, rope, and some wire! Ocoopa Hand Warmer: www.amazon.ca/dp/B08GQ34XWW?r....
Ocoopa Website: www.ocoopa.com/
We will make a primitive friction fire with a cedar spindle and a cedar base or hearth board. I'll try to shoot or snare grouse or snowshoe hare and cook it over an open fire and build a shelter with materials I find in the woods. I'll build a simple lean-to shelter with sticks and spruce or balsam bows, and make an epic fire to cook wild edibles I find in the forest.
My Spices (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedbeardsman.com/shop/
Jeremy's Channel: / @onewildcrafter
The winter offers sparse resources generally, as most things have either died off, or been burred by the snow. Deer have moved off to winter yarding areas, and bears are deep asleep in their dense. However, some small game still lurks around trying to stay away from frostbite and carry on with the rest of the living.
Thankfully there is plenty of snow to make water, but first a fire is needed to survive as eating snow cools the body and is difficult on the body's system. Thankfully we have a small billy can or steel water pot for boiling water.
Primitive challenge with a few simple basic tools. I will show you how to start a fire using primitive techniques and cook a wild grouse over an open fire. Survival is all about making the best of a bad situation. Staying warm and dry is the key to staying alive. After survival is taken care of, it's all about making your situation even better. Finding food, water, and making a shelter is a must to create ultimate survival comfort. I use a saw and basic tools to make a bushcrafter shelter in the Canadian forest using materials around us like tree branches and dried grass.
I attempt a friction fire using primitive technology - a cedar spindle, hearth board, and some birch bark and cedar shavings for a tinder bundle. Can I get a fire lite in tough conditions?
Can you eat snow? Find out!

@1cleblanc
@1cleblanc 2 года назад
I'd reconsider "eating snow", causes more dehydration and uses up body heat. Pack snow in a water bottle or a plastic bag (zip lock is best) and put it in your pocket to melt don't place it directly on skin though. Then while you work it melts giving you the water you need without robbing core temperature. When your shelter is built, start a fire and hang the water bad near the fire to melt faster, not too close or you may melt the bag...
@strider5474

Nothing more satisfying than your first bow drill fire. It indeed does seem like a miracle....such a satisfying accomplishment. Great advice to always have snare wire on hand....always. Legal or not when it comes to survival you just do it. I would have started my fire first which would likely have been a mistake. I would probably spent too much time around it warming my "sensitive hands." I don't know how you guys handle the cold. When my hands get cold, I am done. Well, without ANY tools you don't belong in the woods. I carry at least a knife, firestarter, 1st aid, cordage and something to boil water in, even on dayhikes... I think the idea is you can’t survive off of only eating snow. The snowflake is formed around a dust particle, which in the long run is only dehydrating you more. Otherwise, once the snow becomes liquid you have no issue.

Once you get your set right, you can often bang it off...but the set changes...it gets smooth, your notch is off..etc. I like it when I get it right, and can use the same notch for 3-4 fires even. This one needs to be broken in still!

You actually burn more calories when eating snow since it takes your body more to break it down to water.
@chriskola3822
@chriskola3822 3 года назад
It actually takes a HUGE amount of energy to melt snow (80 calories per gram/mL). No problem if you have food with you but I think it would have been worth it to start a small fire just to melt snow.
@purpuradraco3747
@purpuradraco3747 3 года назад
You don't break down water, you only melt it. That;s where the calories go, into melting it, because body heat needs to be kept up. The body simply absorbs water in the small intestine. It's not like digestion, which takes enzymes and acids to break food down into it's component parts. Same happens for certain vitamins and minerals, which are also absorbed rather than digested. You will still survive longer though, since the body can survive without calories a lot longer than it can survive without water. Not advisable to "eat" snow if hypothermia is a risk, otherwise it makes no difference, certainly not in a one or two day survival vid and not when hypothermia isn't a risk.
