LOTION BARS RECIPE! Are Lotion Bars REALLY ANY GOOD?
Lotion Bars, also known as "Solid Lotion", "Solid Body Butter" or "Solid Moisturizer" are an easy and convenient way to apply pure, natural lotion without the fuss of dealing with a long list of ingredients, large packaging and complicated tutorials!
They have a number of benefits and are a great DIY to start off with if you're new to making your own natural skincare. But are they really worth the hype?
Throughout the tutorial on how to make lotion bars I give you a step-by-step guide on what to do and things to look out for. Along with my honest opinions on whether I think they're a "must have" for any skincare regime.

How to Make Lotion Bars:
Modified Recipe:
50g Avocado Butter
40g Candelilla Wax (or any Beeswax Alternative)
25g Cocoa Butter
25g Shea Butter
2ml Vitamin E Oil
Essential Oils for Fragrance (Up to 1ml)
Things to Look out for:
The lotion bar mixture sets fast so try to have your essential oils & mould ready by the time your ingredients have melted
For a softer solid moisturizer bar, use less wax - although you may find that it's a little "tacky" at room temperature rather than completely solid
You can also pour the melted lotion bar ingredients into a deodorant or lip balm container if your prefer to use it as a stick rather than a bar
Wash up your containers as soon as possible rather than letting the lotion bar mixture set.

When cleaning, heat up the tools and wipe them thoroughly with paper towels. That would prevent all of this from going down the drain, and also make it much easier to clean.

I find the best time to apply lotion bars is right after a hot shower/bath! Your warmed skin heats the bars faster and also absorbs so readily.

Your voice is so soothing, I could listen to you all day! I’m guessing others have already mentioned this tip but FYI the best way to clean up waxes and butters is to do a final reheat and wipe down the inside of your beaker and all your tools with a paper towel which you can then compost. Then wash with hot soapy water as per norm. This makes sure you get the wax out easily but also saves too much going down your drain which over time, if you formulate regularly, can gunk up your drain and cause issues. I actually make lotion bars, the wax is definitely a factor. I usually use 2 parts Shea, 1 part coconut oil, and 1 part wax. But I've also noticed that ratio can change with different waxes. I switched brands of beeswax and had to switch up my ratios because it became very difficult to use like you were experiencing in the video. But once the ratio is fixed it's much easier to work into the skin feeling more velvety on the skin.

@@Skylightatdusk I would think it would be better to have no fragrance especially on your face. People tend to have more sensitive skin on their face and tend to be more prone to reactions. I hope that answered your question!

How do u store the bar after use I mean where do u keep it

@@drsuadabdullah you can store it in a cool place, or even in your car really. The beauty of the lotion bar is that it's easy to travel with and even if it Melts you can put it in the fridge and it will resolidify. Depending on the packaging for sure you can do these things. I package mine in aluminum tins and pretty easy. I don't suggest leaving it in your purse if you do alot of activities outside because it will melt and the tin isn't always upright in purses so it gives it a chance to leak out

Everything about you is just so beautiful, I thought getting a skin like yours would only be possible with expensive industrialised cosmetics; knowing you have it THIS perfect and above all with natural cosmetics... girl...

Thanks for the highly informative video! One thing that came to mind with your difficulty pouring the liquid into the mold: you may want to try heating the container that you use to pour the fluid into the molds. We do that with hot process soap in order to keep everything fluid for as long as possible.

I'm new to DIY skincare products and lotion bars would be cool to try. I love the zero waste aspect of it too! My husband was just complaining about cleaning a container I used to make DIY cleansing balm. Things you don't realize until you try haha.

Hey Elise, here's a few tips for easy cleanup. 1) Heat up the container until the remaining product inside is completely melted, then immediately wipe it out with paper towels. I had the same frustration my first time making lotion bars, which left me with a waxy mess. 2) If it is available in your area, DAWN dishsoap amazing to wash up any greasy/waxy messes. You can use Ecosoya Q210 Soy Wax ( aka Ecosoya CB135) Mango Butter is also a great you can use Candelilla wax as well as the Soy Wax I suggested. You can put these in pop up/twist tubes if you don’t like to handle it. Store your bar in the fridge. I would highly recommend completing a Basic Aromatherapy Course before using them as there are many toxic oils to Pregnant, Breast Feeding Mums, Newborns To Children Of 7yrs, Medications & Medical Problems, The Elderly, Those on Warfarin.

Use a little liquid oil like avocado oil and the setting and washing problem will be soooo much easier 😁 also less wax would also help x

@@WholeElise put your mixing container back in the water bath and let the heat melt the wax and then just wipe the container out with a dry papertowl

I just have dedicated utensils and a melting container. No big deal to not have it totally gone then! I also heated my measuring up prior to use. I love my lotion bars--I've only made three batches and so far they are good! I like them a bit firmer...I added arrowroot powder after it cooled a touch and mixed it in then put the essential oils.

I wonder whether it would help to use a heated towel around the beaker to keep it warm, or perhaps use a copper container to melt it so it retains heat for longer. I might also use a more shallow container to do the melt so there is less surface area to pour over. Also I might use a heated metal ladle instead of pouring out of a container. Might be easier to clean. Definitely lots of ideas. Excited to try making this in stick form! :)

I read somewhere that Candelilla wax is a bit denser than beeswax, so you will have to adjust your DIY skincare recipes if you are substituting it for beeswax. It is recommended that you use half the amount of candelilla wax as beeswax since it has twice the stiffening powers. So if a recipe calls for 1 cup of beeswax, use 1/2 cup of candelilla wax instead. Also Candelilla is supposed to have a slightly higher meltingpoint. Maybe with that in mind the wax issue can be reduced?

I would sugest making single use lotion bits to avoid having to rub the same bar over and over on the skin. I use single use lotion bits and i love it.

Hello Elise I had a big problem mixing up two different recipes at the same time and got them muddled up , like you said a horrible sticky mess what I did was put the mess back in the fridge until they were more solid and was able to scrape the mess off my utensils a lot easier then making it hot again, then cleaning up with paper towels and not gumming up the sink or drain pipe. Just thought you might like to try that next time.

I use my heat gun in between to reheat the mixture and I use IPM in mine to make them less greasy and spread on the skin nicer. Hope that helps!

If someone found that tweaking your measurements worked for them than okay GREAT just go tweak the recipe no need to correct your video. It's a recipe & like ALL recipes take the recipe and tweak it. Haven’t been here in a while but for this video… I Definitely appreciate that you shared the struggles and offered all of your tips, tricks, thoughts and opinions on this!! It’s incredibly helpful! I recently made a solid perfume and ran into the same situation. The whole time worrying about compromising my EO’s scent and my Vitamin E, like seriously this can’t be cooled enough then bam it’s setting up and the thoughts again of if I reheat this is it going to be ruined etc etc. I wish I’d seen your video first! So… yeah.. I washed and soaked and wiped my spatulas and little glass measuring cup like four times 😆 Thanks for being an awesome person and for all the work you put into your great videos❣️☮️💟

I would substitute 1 of the butters (Cocoa Butter-harder butter) add a carrier oil ( Apricot, Almond, Olive Oil, etc) . :) So many variations depending on your likes or uses.

I love lotion bars! I think they are very convenient especially when traveling. No one should be adding moisturizers to skin unless it’s been cleaned first lol I think applying it on your skin was rough because of the amount of beeswax that was used. I’ve noticed people add a carrier oil as well. I loved the video. It’s always good to see what problems may occur when making DIY

I love your videos and you have been a constant source of education for me as I make my own skin care and cleansing products. I have a question in regards to this recipe. It's called a lotion bar and you said it's very moisturizing, but I thought that the emulsion of water and oil is generally what moisturizes skin (i.e. the water in the lotion is essentially sealed in by the oils until your body absorbs it?). In this case the oils help retain moisture already in your skin but don't add to it. Am I just misunderstanding the naming convention or would this also have some other name because it's not an emulsified combination? Thanks for everything Elise! You're amazing Max

I know cocoa butter is good for the skin but for me it's really greasy and I'm not a huge fan of the smell so can I replace that with mango butter

you can pretty much use any type of nut/fruit butters you like, if you know what you want as far as properties of those ingredients you're using. they each have their own particular properties. there are various websites that can help you with that if you don't already know.
