Lord Of The Rings Online is a free to play MMORPG on Steam that initially released all the way back in 2007, over the years this game has had many expansions and updates and given that It's still around today 14 years after launch still sitting at very positive reviews I think we can safely say this has been a successful MMORPG.
In terms of design Lord Of The Rings Online is more of a PVE focused theme park MMO that uses the traditional tab target combat system and has a strong focus on story.
The last time I covered this game was 5 years ago so in this video I jump back in on a new character to see how well the game's holding up in 2021 as well as see if people are still playing.
What do you think about Lord Of The Rings Online (LOTRO) in 2021? do you have good memories with this MMORPG? does it hold up well today? would you like to see a new lord of the rings MMO?

The community in this game is fantastic too. My second day playing, a veteran player whispers me saying that I need better gear. He then sends me en entire set of high quality crafted gear and weapons. Ill never forget it, this game is special to me now.

I remember when I was playing, I needed only a little more turbine points to unlock riding on a character, so the leader of the kinship I was in organized a giant group to help me complete deeds real fast. Seeing your entire kinship stop what they are doing to help you get something was incredible.

The huntsman spider is the OG 'spider-bro'. It's not venomous, doesn't have a web, and will kill actual dangerous spiders along with pesky insects like flies and mosquitoes inside your house. Just remember for every spider you see, there's 20 you don't. But if the spider you see is a huntsman, he's the only one. Source: am Australian.

Spiders creep me out but I leave them alone and they leave me alone we have an understanding 🤣 I used to kill them but I don't anymore. I even take things outside if I can because they don't know any better but I don't touch daddy long legs since I hear they are similar to the huntsman and kill worse ones. I am bug free with the spooders. They are my people now.

For anyone playing, make sure you go into the Launcher settings and chose the 64-bit client. Even if it says "BETA". Performance is night and day. Get the high-resolution texture pack installed as well. LoTRO is one of the last remaining "real" MMORPGs by feeling.

@@MrSB910 I did try that, and I noticed that when I launched with the 64-bit client, my entire friends list disappeared. I'm not sure if others have the same issue, as I just thought it was a bug. But I switched back to the old client because of it.

How is population in the servers? I was a lifetimer, but stoped playing after the moria expansion. Tried to hop in back when it made the transition to microtransactions, but got overhelmed by having to relearn it all and the ammount of different kind of "coins" in the game. Had pretty much all classes

@@grothaal it seemed lively enough for me, but then I’m happy playing solo. It was active enough the past few weeks I didn’t feel alone. Should pick up as the Yule festival starts. Game is full of charm and heart.

@@grothaal They closed down serves a few years back to merge into larger ones. I originally played on Withywindle but now play on Evernight. I'd say there is usually always a decent amount of active players online although there are terrible lag problems. The game is always adding new features when updates and expansions come out so there's always new things to learn. I expect, since you left the game, that there will be a heck of a lot of new things to understand. They've changed traits, skills, virtues, gear to name a few. Most recently they've simplified legendary items which I'm trying to figure out myself!

I recently joined lotro with my husband and just got around to buying all the expansions. Its such a rich and huge world with lots to do and a nice community. Im sad i didnt try it out sooner, very underrated mmo.

Though once you get up a few levels as a hunter you CAN just stand and fight if you want to. You get some instant-cast shots that do a nice chunk of damage, so you can just blast stuff down that gets in your face. Or if you go yellow spec you can use traps and keep them at a distance.

I played this when it was new and it was incredible back then. They also upgraded it slightly for dx10 and then dx11 as well. The thing that dates it for the most part is the animations and lack thereof

Support's my favourite role (likely because I suck at being a DPS or too feeble to be a Tank). More of a buff/debuff person, but if there's a heal ability, you can find me at the edge of a group raid doing AoE heals whenever I can.

Healers in LOTRO are actually fun solo characters. It's been a long time since I played LOTRO like it was my job, but minstrels used to be the strongest solo PvE class and one of the stronger PvP duelers. They're not group dependent, limp noodle priests like in some games. I often try to recreate my brawler/healer bard in other games.

I wish they did more with it, but one of my favorite things in LotRO was the Monster Play. I loved being a spider, setting up ambushes with other spiders and eating the hobbitses after we kill them.

Been playing this game on and off since 2008. They release a new class today, and a new expansion is coming in November. There are active kinships (guilds), you just have to avoid joining one of the very quiet/dead ones. The world is absolutely huge, and in my opinion, still the best recreation of Tolkien's world in any video game. The attention to detail with landmarks from the books, and loads of subtle references make it very enjoyable for people who know the lore. The one very important thing your video doesn't go in to (not your fault, it just requires more time), is that the community is great. Much less toxic than most games, I think partly because the IP attracts a wide range of ages. The experience once you join a good kinship is really enhanced. People are usually happy to answer questions, craft stuff for you, and help you level up. And while the game is very suited to casual players, it also has some very challenging raids. Especially because they have difficulty tiers with different loot. So while tier 1 may be relatively accessible, tier 2 really ramps things up, and by tier 3 to 5 you are really up against a seriously challenging gaming experience where every click and movement matters, and well practiced teamplay is essential. PS: You couldn't chat in World chat during the intro/starter area, but you could after that. It's to avoid spammers creating free accounts and immediately harassing people.

Same pretty much, it's a hard MMO to beat so it's almost never left my hard drive. Have played WoW on like 4 different occasions since 2006 but never stay for more than a month because the other players are pricks.

I remember just sitting in the middle of Eregion and staring up at the beautiful nighttime skybox while on my journey towards Moria. The epic story questlines really are an adverture. The first time I found my way to Rivendel after being chased by angry bears that were after my underleveled hunter ass. Getting lost in a snow storm in the Misty Mountains. Riding my steed across the plains of Rohan. Damn I love this game!

Eheh back in the day getting to Rivendell sure was an adventure! I remember it so fondly, the first time I looked at the valley...amazing! There is also the quest to go from The Shire to Rivendell as a level 1 chicken lol that took a while to do, but my character still has the chicken cloak lol

@@pelisinho I actually got that same feeling the other day when New World launched and I was a few hours into playing when ended up on a mountain and I turned around to an amazing sunset over the map with raytracing in all its glory. It gave me that lotro feel from being amazed for the first time.

For anyone who's interested in trying this game, now is a great time: All quest packs (basically you pay points to unlock quests in a zone) are free to pick up till the 30th of november. And all expansions up till Mordor (which are like 6 expansions out of the 8 currently available) are roughly 95% off till the 30th November, you pay 99 points instead of 2000-2500. The points are obtainable by completing Deeds (this game's equivalent of achievements) and you would need 594 of them to get all 6 expansions.

@@bubufut Yes there is! I;ve seen some guides on it that allow you to get 95 points in 40 minutes. So do that on 6 characters (yes you can farm all those points, delete character and do it again) and you've got enough content to last you for years.

Yes, free account gets 2 slots. If you spend on the game once, you get 3 extra slots permanently

Ive come back to this game about every 2 years since it launched. Aside from the movies, there’s not likely to be a better tribute to Tolkien’s works. If you do nothing else, make a character and go level in the shire. And read the quests!

People are actually massing in the Legendary Servers. They are seasonal servers that opened on June. About the class being "locked with money", you can get them via ingame currency (that you can farm) directly. It's possible to never spend a dime on the game and unlock everything :D

Yeah, I farmed to unlock a lot of the expansion packs without paying. But I gotta say, just buy instead. It's not worth your time putting in 50 hours of work for a $10 expansion. I recall farming in The Barrow downs. Which is a really cool area. Unlocked so much in that area, but took so much time.

people always try to make this point and it's so stupid. The first reply nailed it. I could grind for 100 hours for $10 worth of currency, or work an extra 20 minutes and buy it instead. The fact that you can work for premium currency at a rate of about 10 cents an hour is not a selling point.

Peon, those "Roleplayer" names were the bog standard titles that your character starts off with, based on which option you chose during character creation (i.e. which area your character hails from). You can access it from the character menu (by pressing 'c').

A huge thing currently they provide almost all the areas (except bigger expansions) for free for a limited time. You just need to activate the coupon on your account and you have them forever.

They have redone some of the older zones and upgraded the graphics for them so they are more in line visually with the newer zones now.

Would I like to see a “modern” LOTR MMORPG? No, not really. It would be focussed on “action”, have low challenge, low skill ceilings, lack of community, everything solo, and be trying to squeeze me for money. LOTRO, for all its age, is still a great multiplayer game with an excellent community and some wonderful attention to detail and story. There's a huge amount of good content -- they weren't idle all those years. It's just a fantastic place to *be* and explore. Could a new MMO capture that richness? Almost none of them have anything like it.

Yeah maybe it’s just bias but tbh I would just want a modernized Lotro, the way they portray the world I love so much is what keeps me interested, the storytelling is incredibly good. I don’t see a newer mmo doing as well with the world building, I feel like that kind of work isn’t what is rewarded in todays climate, it just wouldn’t be the same.

Some of the most fun I've had in an MMO was just standing around with my mates playing music on our instruments in LOTRO. Trying to get everyone in sync was bloody hilarious xD Also, the sound your weapon makes when you play as a minstrel is pure comedy!

Sorry mate but a completely unbalanced review - you barely scratched the surface. You played one character/class and gave your opinion on that? Compare that to your assessments of BDO, WOW, GW2 where you had played up to endgame to give your (I would say fair) assessments. HOw can you give a decent opinion if you don't even get out of the starter zone. Up your game is all I can say. Endgame lotro is very good and rewarding as an mmo. It's not for everyone but that's like most things in life.

This comment is just to go over some of the cons you mentioned. 1. Classes cost LP which you can get from deeds. It's a slow process, but you do eventually get enough to afford the classes even without any payments. I personally find the deeds fun to do since I'm more of a completionist. Furthermore, pretty much everything (except expansions, unfortunately) go on sale, different things go on sale every week so it's not that bad to get the LP if you really want to play a certain class/race. 2. New players not being able to chat in world chat is mostly to prevent gold spammers and other scammers, it's not foolproof, but it's understandable. 3. With the map being awkward, I agree actually, I've gotten used to it over the years, but the map could definitely be better, however, there are plugins you can use to improve the map if you really want a better map, I just don't use these personally since it's not a big deal for me, but there's nothing wrong with using them. Finally, I'd just like to say that despite all the stuff that is seemingly behind paywalls, I've actually never spent a dime on LOTRO over the years I've been playing. It's extremely grindy to get all the expansions being a f2p player, but you can, and I have. Currently, a bunch of the expansions are only 99 LP (super easy to get) and you can get all of the quest packs with just a coupon code. LOTROFREEQUESTS. Furthermore, they're updating the legendary item system very soon, so now is probably the best time to get back into it.

A big pro that you could've mentioned: You can earn the cash shop currency in-game through various achievements (deeds), and a lot of things are unlocked once you become VIP (about $12/mo depending on which plan). Over the years I've used a lot of Lotro Points I earned in-game to pay for various things, like mounts, quest packs, etc. Also, the creep map you went into is unfortunately dead and wasn't much of a success when it released, but the first map you launched into has most of the action if you're on an active server. If only you went further to go out the gate instead of using the banner into Osgiliath, you probably would've seen other players.

This. Cash shop currency is fairly easy to earn just completing deeds, and plentiful enough to unlock whole new areas and the like. Just completing all the "kill x number of whatever" deeds in each new area you enter earns a good amount of store cash.

You need a massive amount of time to grind for those lotro points. It is not that easy to farm lp and buy everything unless you invest houndreds of hours just farming deeds.

Pretty sure this game was one of the first to feature realtime instrument playing too, allowing use of midi files to play bangers on the lute :P There used to be bands everywhere in the high pop cities, syncing up and playing pretty advanced tunes.

@@brambleback I wouldn't rule it out entirely. The show could be huge, bigger than the LOTR ilms, it's about the 2nd age as well so it's a different license. Bear in mind they were churning out LOTR games quite some time after the 1st film. Though it is doubtful Amazon would do that anytime in the next few years because of New World and the state it's in. At least we should see Total War Tolkein or similar, i'd be amazed if not.

I don't think a 20 min look at a starting zone is particularly helpful when looking at a 15 year old MMO. I learned very little about Lotro from this video

Also, regarding activity, there are MANY Kinships (guilds) that are still maxed out in population (also often 'cause most ppl in the game have several chars who are in the same guild, but still) and they are usually VERY active, but mostly focused on either end-game stuff or the previous level caps (50, 60, 75, 100 etc). And regarding the world chat restriction: it was implemented as a way to stop gold-spammers from spamming the chat all the time, now you have to be level 20 as a Free-to-play-player to access the world chat, but if you join a Kin (guild) you can talk all you want in the kin-channel, or send Tells (PM/DM) to people regardeless of level. There is a new expansion coming around November 13th, with a new class along with it, the Brawler (accessible from 13th of October if you've already pre-purchased the expansion), so the game is very much still active, both from devs and players. Also, the raids/dungeons can get very mechanically difficult at level caps throughout the game, and there are TONS of them, so it's a great game for people who want challenging group content.

Back when I was a young lad, I got the Founders edition of LOTRO; cost me $500 AUD(which is still valid and honoured in the current version). Honestly I sunk at least a few years worth of hours in those days into the game; And at its prime it was an amazing mmo; But as all note F2P shot the playerbase in the head, but I guess because it was such an honestly warm game to play, I understand why so many people return to it; I mean PVP in its prime was some of the best at its time and I loved it; And I'd kill to see a new LOTR mmo how or what that looks like I have no idea, and as noted the Amazon death of LOTRO 2 is a shame. And a note, those Graphics are identical to the launch with minor tweaks; So you'd only guess how young 17 year old me was blown away. Not to mention the map scale; Also the raid are still one of my most beloved in any mmo.

I bought a lifetime subscription back in 07 and to date it is by far the best investment I've made. I strongly reccomend this game to anyone. With the big expansion giveaways and ability to unlock lotro points as you play you can progress in the game without spending a dime if that's what you want to do.

The nostalgia is so strong. Miss this game so much. My guild wasn't one of the strongest but it had a tight friendship. My guildmaster even married one of the members. Peon is not very good at appreciating aesthetics and the mid 2000's graphics style. I think both of those games are gorgeous, and better looking than many modern mmos. It's not all about textures, shades and polygons. Just look at the shire. Shit is fucking gorgeous, organic. The entire game feels and looks like an organic world. Wow does, too. The same can't be said for a lot of other mmos. I think lotro is gorgeous.

Love LOTRO. Was my first MMO after Runescape. I quit around the time of Isengard or maybe the one after, but I only ever made it to Isengard in the story. So much released since then, but I don't do themeparks anymore, as I have had my fill. I always wanted to make it to Mordor, but I now I don't even have the time even if I wanted to return. Moria in this game is FANTASTIC.

I'd guess new players not being able to use map chat is a mechanism to reduce gold sellers and spammers. I don't think it is that bad. At least new player is forced to activelly seek other players and chat with them while in proximity.

If you want to try it out make sure to use the 64-bit client that was released last year, graphics are soooooo much better! Also, if you buy VIP for one month you permanently unlock every quest-pack in the game permanently, even if you cancel it! Also, you can farm the in-game currency to get enough to buy the expansions from grinding for like 3-4 hours!

I remember starting to play this game with a bunch of friends not far after its release. I leveled ahead quite a bit so I hung around in Monster play while waiting for them to catch up. They never did catch up and stopped playing for various reasons and I made some friends in monsterplay, so that's what i played almost exclusively. There was something quite charming about Heroes being very much stronger than monsters 1v1, so monsters had to team up and cooperate. Over time you unlocked new ranks and abilities and could get on par with some classes, you unlocked cosmetics too so the heroes would recognize you. Have a lot of good memories stalking that pvp zone, picking at the fringes of a zerg with my literal wolfpack of hungry stealthed doggos.

There is something about the simplicity of Lotro that always makes me really relaxed when I play it. The graphics, the combat rhythm, the songs and the old-school gameplay ( there's no need to strafe , jump, evade )

I just started playing LOTRO again a couple weeks ago, and I remember why I enjoyed it so much back in the day. Of course the graphics have been improved, fps has been improved, and overall the game feels really solid. The devs clearly put a lot of love and care into the world-building, especially early on, as the zones are beautifully done. Bree is still hands-down my favorite mmo city/town of all time. It just FEELS like a large town, rather than a closed-in box like most of them do.

PVP in lotro (monster play) can be so much fun, its TOUGH on new players though, I recommend you join raids or groups to start with so you can rank up, there's like 40 vs 40 fights every day that look epic and seems like the kind of stuff you'd be into.

Not a good idea starting a new character. All the improvements come at the end game. Ive been playing on and off for 14 years, and believe it or not, I never managed to leave Eriador and go to the mines of moria.. leveling just takes 1 million years for me.

Even better, you can run from the Shire to Mordor *as a Chicken* and throw yourself into a lava pit: you can't get to the actual Crack of Doom as it's inside an Instance but it's the next best thing 🐔→🍗 Word of warning though, watch out for those stealth Mumakil 🐘 legend says they can hide behind trees 🤪

Came here to say this. There are lots of active kinships (guilds) in the game, and it's not hard to find one focused on whatever it is you're interested in, be it questing, socializing, or end-game raiding

They have released classic servers. You still have all modern combat skills but the game is reverted back to the original game. The expacs are released slowly over time. Check it out. The server is called TreeBeard.

the creators for lord of the pings could have done much better at character design and and grass and more placed. Yet the flat floor as ground as landscape is slightly better and worse in design that is 3/5 rating, with a such odd reasons that is not final in lord of the pings will likely change and did like a few games like it, being guild wars as a style that fails together at barely a style being determined. Kalonline has greater performance. Could have your opinion, facts is more importantly better. TheLazyPeon is stubborn on figuring out how youtube works, heck no one wants to do their role correctly on youtube, its insane! its very easy and simpler than all these sentences being thrown at the viewer. If I did video postings for the public, I wouldn't use my voice or a face/body reveal and without the trending of other peoples work. It's much better to hide what could be much worse for some people from a camera.

@@FrankC-ht3sf imo it is worth playing. I started 6 months ago and have tons of fun questing and raiding. Atm you can get nearly all expansions for 20 euros so there's no better time to join. There are a few discord servers for the game, mostly for raiding but some big kinships (guild) have their own discord server too :)

There is going to be a MASSIVE f2p update where you get almost all quest packs and lots of expansion for free, along with orher goodies like new races, classes and other stuff. Also a graphic update soon. If you havent checked lotro out yet i highly recommend it!

For me, personally, I don't actually need a modern Lotr mmo. In fact they covered all off the interesting places and story's from the books/movies and beyond that - this game offers a massive amount of content wich you can explore and quest in. Would actually not recommend the game specifically if you're kind of an End-Game player type - even if there are many things to do - the strength of this game is mainly world building (please explore as much as can), the story (please read as many quest texts as you can, cause it's just worth it - especially in the shire cause it's funny as hell) and the community (wich is in most cases / nearly every time the most enjoyable and kindest). You can easily solo most of the open world content but you can also play it in groups, what makes it enjoyable too. Would recommend it to Any LOTR fan, cause there is maybe nothing more immersive than that. In case of immersion i would consider it to be on top off the most franchise games
