Lotus Evora 400 - (One Take)

The 2016 Lotus Evora 400 is the fastest production Lotus road car ever. With a supercharged 3.5L V6 making 400 HP and a lightweight, strong chassis with a much improved interior, the Evora 400 can hit 60 mph from a dig in 4.1 seconds, and top out at 186 mph. And it sounds absolutely orchestral while doing it.

You described it like I felt about the previous Evora. Having been through the interior, under-panneling, suspension, engine, etc. I can say they designed the chassis like a race car for the street. The aluminum monocoque and underpanneling are awesome, with the interior hiding a mini "rollcage". The car can easily be daily driven, we have horrible pot holes and steep parking lot inclines, and even though I cringed hitting little bumps, the suspension soaks everything up. I've never felt a more comfortable ride that handles and feels like the Evora. The only thing the previous model was lacking was power, at 400RWHP(turbo) the car felt quick enough, with the chassis wanting more, no unsettling wheel spin even from a dig.

Lotus made one of the most reliable engines sound amazing & put power down. It's mid engined, and the body isn't made out of wet tissue paper like the Elise. If the Evora had the automatic headlights/wipers, heated+cooled seats & could easily remove the rear seat then you'd have a 911 fighter.
@brianhenry1041
@brianhenry1041 8 лет назад
+DirtDude117 , headlights are 'kind of' auto....with drl's the low beams are on when on. A simple jump wire and you can turn them off which most owners pay for as they can be a nuisance when pulling up to your fav restaurant and blinding those inside. So I and many others prefer non-auto headlights and no drl's. It's part of the Lotus mantra.... Manual everything is better. Less items to go wrong. The seats are heated. I agree, cooled seats are nice, but I don't wish to bitch about cooled seats in any car as I feel like a whiny lil twat. The Evora400 is orderable as a 2+0 so no rear seat and/or you can remove the rear seat and back in less than an hour. After driving this car for a good 30 miles, it's a different car from the previous Evora. This car is phenomenal and will hopefully sell well once prospects get behind the wheel.
@brianhenry1041
@brianhenry1041 8 лет назад
+DirtDude117, a GT4 with the sport seats (needed for track for harness) doesn't offer heated or cooled seats. So I'd say the Evora400 is one up here. lol
@DirtDude117
@DirtDude117 8 лет назад
***** Well the GT4 is also more of a track car while the Evora400 isn't as focused. The Exige would be the track rat for sure. ***** The less to break motto is great for Lotus, and I do agree with it to some degree but when you are paying $100k for a 2+2 or 2+0 car it's hard to not measure it up against the 911, F-Type, Corvette and Audi's cars (not sure price range). People paying that kind of money do want more luxuries than you or I would. Lotus makes amazing cars, but cross shopping & lack of dealerships really do hurt the brand. I'm not saying it's a bad car, but when you look around $100k can buy you some pretty crazy cars.

+Arrtus TV Lotus stopped using turbos after the last generation Esprit (1993-2002). The Exige S in 2006 used a Supercharger. The original Evora S from 2010 uses almost exactly the same supercharged V6 engine as the Evora 400 in this video.

@rasvial
@rasvial 8 лет назад
+Arrtus TV you're glad as they're making less power because of it? I'm not sure what's so great- supercharger whine instead of turbo exhaust? It's a less efficient way of making power, and if lotus is about lightweight efficient performance, using an inefficient supercharger is antithetical. This car isn't about drag racing, so the initial "coming on boost" won't be missed. If you're gonna say turbo lag.. you're clearly living in a sadly turbo-less world.
@bobhope4288

@givemeajackson 8 лет назад
+Andreas Breslawski the engine might be toyota, the rest is still lotus, so there won't be any shortage of problems i imagine. but at least not engine problems, which is a good thing. and yeah, the engine seems to work well for the cars, so why not use it? sounds way better than a GTR engine to me...
@victorkanagui5006

+kma198199 as a exotic car name like Jaguar, Aston Martin or Lotus, you wouldn't expect this to have a normal car engine, because they were made to be fuel economy, but it also has a steel cranckshaft, 6 bolt per main, double VVT-i, and the s/c its made by TRD. Lotus Evora GTE has a N/A 4.0 2GR-FE made by Cosworth with 440hp. Thanks for the fun video, Matt.I stumbled on your review only after test driving a 400. Driving it opened my eyes. I noticed the stability while trail braking just as you did. I liked the smooth power delivery, the control feel, even the view through the windshield, and the car fit me physically like a glove. I was shocked to find I liked the sum of the package better than than any of the obvious competitors. It was a major and very pleasant surprise. I was shopping for a Porsche of course and considering a Grand Sport too, samples of both of which I'd driven several times.The original field included the 4C and F Type R , AMG GTS, a C2S or a Grand Sport. I hadn't even considered the Lotus until I saw it at a dealership and asked for a test drive figuring" what the hell?" Now that Geely has controlling interest, I think a Lotus is a safer buy and that pushed me over the edge. I get mine next week. Your review was influential in backing up my impressions of the 400. It's great looking in the metal and a really special thing to drive. Yay Lotus! I can't wait to take delivery.

Ok, short rant, sort of. I know that the Jaguar F-type V6s is always touted as the best sounding v6 out today (a lot of people claiming ever) but honestly, I think that this has it beat. Hearing this throaty a sound coming from a v6 is amazing; the top end has the right kind of sound too. I've seen people say its sort of like a modern Alfa Busso and I really hear that at the top end. Fifteen years ago it was hard to find a v6 that really sounded good, not just good for a v6 but as its own engine note. It seems like they usually end up like the new ATS-V and CTS Vsport, where the engine makes great power and got the job done, but still sounded more like you were wringing out a chevy malibu than driving a sports car. With engines like this, the Jag V6s, and the Alfa Quadrifoglio it seems like there is definitely a future full of great sounding cars, even if regulations mean we see fewer and fewer V8s, V10s, and V12s. Just my two cents though.

The Lotus suspension and other higher end cars is why I give a lot of aftermarket coil setups a tough time. That suspension was supple yet supplied a lot of grip; that is something that can be achieved on every car and is really what most people want. So people installing expensive coils that beat them up on the street are doing their owners a disservice and perpetuating the myth that a 'performance suspension' must beat the crap out of your body.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 8 лет назад
+Brodey Dover I agree. My Mustang's chassis has been reinforced heavily, making it significantly more rigid than stock, which means I can run softer springs and have a good ride while allowing that suspension to do its work in the corners.

Actually, most McPherson strut designs actually loose camber with body roll. With double wishbones, you can use a shorter upper arm to make it gain camber.

I was ready to say that a base Corvette is probably a better car for much less, but I'd still go with the Lotus. Not sure I could even say that for a Grand Sport 'vette after watching this. I'd go with the Lotus, even though I've always loved Corvettes. This thing sounds nice, especially given that it's Camry engine, of all things, but the 'vette sounds even better, but yeah...I'd still pick this. Toyota reliability, new-car warranty...and it's a Lotus.

It's kind of disingenuous for everybody to keep saying "from a Camry" as this motor is also used in lots of Lexus cars as well. Its a really nice power plant, as witnessed in this video.

+T-WRX go to the mountains bordering Tennessee descending from Richmond in mid western VA. I wanna say it was the Blue Ridge mountains, not sure though. I road tripped coast to coast in mid September 11' to Las Vegas and I felt like I was fooled into thinking nothing was out there. The colors of the leaves, the sweeping curves, and a modded out infiniti q45t was the highlight of my personal road driving experiences. It changes the way you drive, and the way you look at it afterward. I would just go driving for the hell of it since.

@TheHesK9
@TheHesK9 8 лет назад
+Armin K Lotus actually developed their own V8 for the cancelled Esprit. I'm not sure if it was finished though.
@armink9686
@armink9686 8 лет назад
TheHesK9 It's likely outdated and no offense Lotus, but it's better for them to focus their ressources on everything and just buy the engine, it saves them money and reputation.
@TheHesK9
@TheHesK9 8 лет назад
+Armin K well the idea was a 4.8 litre V8 producing 612bhp and revving up to 9000rpm. It would also be used as a 3.6 V6 by taking 2 cylinders off and a 2.4 4-cylinder for the Elise. It would also be 80kg lighter than the Lexus V8
@armink9686
@armink9686 8 лет назад
TheHesK9 That sounds amazing, but that's all marketing talk, I mean sure it is possible but Lotus isn't exactly the wealthiest car maker and it doesn't have a huge parent company. It can either go really well and they could even sell their engines or go really bad and make Lotus go bust.

Also notice how Matt changed lanes to pass. That's the other reason, as riding near the edge invites close, dangerous passing from most people.

Such a nice car. It's going to be my next one for sure, but perhaps one with the carbon package to look more like the Sport 410 whilst retaining the stereo, nav, a/c, and sound insulation. I'm glad you like it but be honest would you really buy one? In my eyes, even if there are Porsches out there for similar money with more interior toys I am not so sure they drive as well as this car does unless you are going to pay for something like a GT3 and beyond. This is such a great overall package and I hope Lotus manages to sell every single one it makes so they can also get on with the new Elise/Exige chassis that is supposed to debut around 2020.

If you check out Doug demuro's channel you'll see he just got a pre owned vantage and its in the shop every other day. Do not get an Aston if you want to use it more than 3 times a week. I think you should consider a ghibli though it'll be cheaper than a used granturismo and it sounds just as good.

+Ian Soderlund Yeah thats the guy from jalopnik.com. I actually have a 2009 v8 vantage (lowered on coil overs, and ADV1 rims, and exhaust) and i've gotten his same scretching noise coming around corners (only when the car has been sitting for a long time). I am crossing my fingers it doesn't get as bad as his..... I have been starting to think about my next car and have been really considering the lotus evora s (sport racer) or the 400 later on.... What do you think then about the evora 400 or s vs a pre owned GTR?
