MillCityTimes.com - This siren is located near 10th St. S and Washington Ave s in the Mill District of Minneapolis. News from the Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront.
If I was fast asleep and a tornado was bearing down on my house, right across the street is exactly where I would want that siren to be. Just a thought.
no i haven't but ive seen the listed : whelen wps 3016, whelen 3016, whelen wps 4008, whelen 4008, federal signal model 2, federal signal model 5 and 5bt, sth 10, and a aca allertor
Loud as it may be, at least it WORKS!! When I worked in Maplewood, MN, back in 2005, we had a tornado warning, and the damned siren was so soft and puny, I thought I was hearing the whine of an 18-wheeler go by on nearby I-494! I was appalled!! That same year, our siren in St. Paul was old and rundown so that it sounded like a hot-weather bee imitating a siren, LOL!!! Soon afterward, we got a new siren that sounds like an actual siren!
@minkyblack Yes, back in November after I contacted our City Council member. It has been deactivated, and they are searching for a new location. In fairness to the City, that siren was there long before the neighborhood grew up around it. Nobody thought to ask to have it moved until I posted the video.
The 2001 is loud but is not the loudest. The P-50 and Chrysler are both way louder. The 2001 may be loud but it only carries 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile OUTDOORS faintly while as the P-50 can be heard clearly INSIDE at 1/2 of a mile. So it is not the loudest but it is one of the loudest. Can understand that this might be the loudest to a normal non siren enthusiast. But a siren enthusiast knows this isn't the loudest. Nice view and Video anyway!
Patrick Murphy On a Clear Day, with No Clouds, with no Wind, No Trees in the Vicinity, in the Middle of Nowhere, so a State like Wyoming, it could faintly be heard from 50 Miles
Yeah, if you have the right environment, you can really stretch the audible radius of a 2001. But places that have many trees, and loud traffic, the 2001 will preform less than intended. 2001s give a good 3/4-1 1/4 mile range in a good area.
I really wonder if this is modded. If it can't rotate or else damage the adjacent building yet it still has to project equally in all directions. Perhaps a louder chopper? This sounds way louder than any other Federal Signal 2001 siren videos I've seen.
This is a great location, because as you stated, hundreds of people live/ and or are staying there. If there was an emergency, everyone would be notified, due to the 2001 (siren in the video)'s location.
I've heard other Federal Signal 2001's but not at THIS kind of volume. Damn! I think this one is customized. Rotator disabled and the volume really amped up.
I have the exact same siren to the one that goes over here, it also spins, especially how it goes over my school everytime it feels like you are standing right under this thing. What it really feels like is if someone was hitting you in your ear drum 4 times because it hurts so much
This is a Federal Signal 2001 siren. They are 130dB. The loudest siren made was the Christler Air Raid Siren. Those were 138dB. Both of which can cause hearing damage at close distance! Also, these are supposed to rotate while they sound, so you're not even getting the full "Dose" of sound!
And at least they disabled the rotation of the horn. Typically, it rotates when in operation to disperse the sound. If it had been rotating, you wouldn't be standing on that balcony, I can PROMISE you that. I'm glad the city is doing something about your concern, though.
I don't see why you are complaining. At least you are able to hear it when it goes off. I'm sure they're are hundreds of people who would love to know they were able to hear a siren go off if there was an emergency.
Its called an "emergency siren" because its used in an emergency and in the case of an emergency they want ppl to actually hear it clearly to say "get the hell out of here"
@313STREETS The siren is 15 feet from the bedroom window of a 4 month old baby girl. The windows rattled and she screamed in terror every time it went off. There are plenty of more appropriate spots for that siren, the City of Minneapolis agreed.
Please at least try and do some research. The Chrysler air raid siren and the P-50 are both louder, with 138 dB at 100 ft and 135 dB at 100 ft respectively
you sir are so wrong. Chrysler victory bell siren is the loudest siren ever made it was 137 dB at 100 feet. I bet that little thing can't even get near the power of the Chrysler
I actually used to live next to one of these exact ones as a kid, literally right in my backyard, I’d be outside in my backyard and on the first day of every month it would go off, you get used to it overtime especially if you live next to one, there was even one right in the schoolyard of my elementary school when I was a kid, heard them all the time.
@MillCityTimes This siren is not the loiudest siren in the world. The loudest siren in the world is the Chrysler-Bell Cold War-era victory air raid siren, which can be heard 4 miles in radius.
If a tornado/straight line winds is flying toward Minneapolis, I'm pretty sure the inconvenience of being woken up by a Federal Signal is a little more important than sleeping.
The actual loudest siren in the world would be the Chrysler Hemi operated Chrysler Bell Victory Siren at about 138 db. (That may be incorrect as I havent researched it on a while)
the siren should stay there because alot of people die in tornadoes when there isnt sirens around, they should also keep this siren because they can be warned alot quicker so they can get to shelter before the tornado ever comes
Actually, Sir, that is a Federal Signal 2001SRNB. In which case it's -supposed- to spin. My guess is that the municipal body that runs said siren probably disabled the rotator motor so it didn't end up facing the building behind it.
well, you are supposed to hear it, and you are supposed to wake up. i think this is a siren win! i live in the suburbs, and if you want to hear the sirens, you have to stfu. if a tornado came at night and i was asleep, i would die.
The Federal Signal 2001 is a particularly shrill and irritating siren. This is possibly the best sounding recording of this type of siren I've ever heard though haha
I mounted my 1003A Behind my house. Becuase it's private property, it's considered a private emergency wanring device, though i only sound it in sync with city sirens Via radio.
i looked for this siren on google maps at the exact location where this was filmed and the siren is not there anymore. if i were living there i too would want that siren removed
As of 2014 This and all the other sirens have been replaced by Whelen Vortex R4s and smaller Whelen O-A2s 15 of these O-A2s are in the Downtown Core area and this exact location here in this video the replacement Vortex R4 has been put on top of Minneapolis Fire Station # 1
The siren was there before the building he's in and they've turned off the rotator with it pointing away from the building. Personally, if a tornado is coming, I'd rather go deaf and survive. Eardrums are useless when you're dead. In fairness, they could have relocated it, but the building owners would probably have to petition for that.
This is not the world's loudest siren that is still titled to the Chrysler Victory Siren "Big Red" if you compared the two side by side you would definitely agree.
This siren is long gone. I don't even live in the US, but just had to try and find it using the details above. Looks like it disappeared shortly before 2011. I wonder if there is another one placed nearby?
That's a 2001. It's actually not the loudest siren in the world. The loudest siren currently made is the ACA P-50. The loudest siren ever made is the chrysler bell air raid siren. They're both way louder than this.
I did hear that the siren was here before the building. apparently there used to be a parking lot here. I think they should mount the siren on the top of your building so it can rotate and because the metrodome is right there.
Well if this great siren is too close to the places where people live, at least you know no one will die if a tornado hits, they have to hear it if they are asleep, in the shower or listening to music etc.
I have siren that's louder than this one set-up to run in my South Minneapolis basement. Believe it or not, I am a collector of these things (older, different models than this one)...it'd be awesome to have one right outside my window. I envy you! lol
@garyhstorms10 We have not raised the issue yet. We'll be posting an article on our community site this week - then forwarding links to local officials.
Yes! That is a Federal Signal 2001! But this siren IS NOT the loudest siren in the world. The real loudest siren in the world is a Chrysler Bell Air Raid Siren.
Wow i thought the rotater was broken do you think that the county has any plans to move it to a more open location soon and the echo is awsome because of the buildings around it
@Kyle247l looks like your not into air raid sirens at all, they test them everywhere like once a month or once a week. depends where you are, its called a "test"
if they move the siren no one will hear it those sirens are put there to help save peoples lives so be thankful that u r in a place where you know youll be safe and hear that siren yeah it would annoy me too if the thing was right outside my door but ill think hey its saving me
How dare your Government care about your wellbeing enough to pay for and maintain an emergency alert system. You’ll change your tone when that siren saves your life. The audacity of some people, I swear.
