Magic still has Extended (Modern), Type 1 (Vintage), and Type 1.5 (Legacy). You might also be surprised to know that it still has Type 2 (Standard) lurking around, although all of them are played online more than using the actual cards now. 😂

@@Xoulrath_ Extended and Modern are a bit different though, Extended still had rotation based on time while Modern is basically forced rotation through power creep. Because Wizards is embracing Commander pretty hard, I could see them trying to foist more and more Commander-specific cards into all formats in order to juice sales, and given the long lineage of the game it could lead to just recreating/reinventing all of the major RL cards, including power.

@@cobaltplasma I'm at the gym so I can't type up a brief history, but you can Google it and find out more about Extended Basically morphing into Modern. Also, Modern existed since 2011 and that was EIGHT years prior to MH sets, so people really need to stop spreading that misinformation. MH sets were also asked for by players, and aside from a handful of mistakes, most Modern players prefer the format now as opposed to before. Also, Modern ALWAYS had a rotation, it was just with Standard sets. Timer went off, back to my workout. Later.

The fact that they're power creeping as heavy as they are makes me believe that they'll recreate every significant RL card at some point just to continue inflating quarterly and yearly revenue.

@@lomalindasmogcheck1especially with a game that has gone as long as Magic has. Heck they could even bleed in powercrept RL cards into UB sets to further juice sales and then have Universes Within versions sold in Secret Lairs to double dip…and then later feed those into Master sets hehe

​@@lomalindasmogcheck1they've already started doing this. MH3 just "reprinted" Recurring Nightmare with that new Nightmare card. They aren't exactly the same, but they more or less do very similar things. Some people even believe that the new card might be better because of the Energy counters. Time will tell. They "reprinted" Necropotence in Necrodominance. It certainly has potential, and some early playtesting from some RU-vid channel showed that it might be broken in Legacy. If that's the case, then they definitely powercrept the card, seeing as how Necropotence doesn't see Legacy play currently. That said, they can't powercreep some of the RL. It's just impossible. Duals are a great example to start with. Louie suggested they do Legendary Snow Duals, which are close to being effectively the same, because you just run a single copy of them, and fetch them up. If you need second copies, then you have to go with Shocks. So that's close to the same, but it isn't better at all. Then you look at cards like Ancestral Recall. They've "reprinted" it in Ancestral Visions. It saw some play for a while, and it does cost the same as Recall, but waiting several turns before you get to draw the cards drastically reduced its power. Even in decks that can abuse Cascade, it hurts the design of the deck since it's mana cost is 0 and it will be cascaded into instead of, say, a Living End. To effectively power creep Recall, or any other Power 9, would make for cards that were so beyond broken, that they'd be banned withing weeks or days, if not pre-banned, which would defeat the purpose of making them. Imagine an Ancestral Recall "reprint" that cost UU, one of which is Phyrexian mana. You homogenize the format to the point that EVERY deck splashes Blue just to play the card. It's still technically a worse version of the original since it costs 2 life and a U, or UU, but it definitely comes close to being the same card, and it's still beyond broken. Looking at another way to powercreep a card as insane as Recall would be to make the same card, but the U is Phyrexian. At that point it is better because you're drawing cards for "free." Or you could really power creep it, keep it the same standard U mana, and just draw 4 cards instead of 3. This theory crafting design exercise being that, yes, SOME cards, perhaps even a lot of RL cards, can be powercrept with new designs to be better than simply reprinting the original. But there are still plenty of RL cards that can just break the game if they get even functionally reprinted.

@@Xoulrath_ All good. I'd add newer pseudo RL cards can be better in the sense of being more versatile. Tying into newer poolset. *This might even make collectors worried that while RL is not being reprinted; but effectively replaced. Reprint vs replace lolz
