The Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert with The Buddy Rich Big Band and Louie Bellson (1924-2009) in Los Angeles, 1989.
Track:
00:10 - Drum solo (intro)
00:53 - Carnaby Street (part I.)
01:41 - Drum solo
07:39 - Carnaby Street (part II.)
Upscaled to 2160p@60fps resolution with AI technology + remastered audio.
Source: DVD by DCI Music Video Inc., 2006
The source is not only low resolution but also low quality and over compressed video with badly recorded audio, so don't expect a miracle. The audio remaster was focused on the drum set and the bass.

Louie showed what set him apart here with his double kicks in the big band jazz context and a library of interesting chops that were his alone, along with hands that could keep up with Buddy in a drum battle as they had done numerous times. One of the world's all time greats.

I met him many years ago Super nice guy. I’m just amazed at his playing for any age, but he’s older here and doesn’t even break a sweat. Inspiring is all I can say. What a talent.

No one more qualified than Louie to lead Buddy's band. They had some great drum battles... namely an LP " Are you ready for this". Louie maybe more inventive and musical.... Buddy brutal, fast and always the one to chase. Two of the greatest drum technicians who have ever lived. There are great drummers out there now...Weckle, Paice, Palmer the list is long. But when we lost Buddy and Louie some of the magic disappeared from drumming.

That wasn't quite Buddy's band. I'd have to study more carefully to get most of the names, but the lead trumpet player is Bobby Shew. At the time time was recorded Bobby was playing lead for Louie's band and a couple of others. He had not play with Buddy for a long time.

Unfassbar guter Drumsound , blitzschnelles kreatives Spiel, und man sieht Louie an , wieviel Freude er beim spielen hat. Unglaublich , was der Mann hier zeigt . In der Serie " Superdrumming " sah man , das er die Bassdrums mit Holzbeatern anspielt , sicherlich ein Grund für diesen knackigen Bassdrumsound

Louie was not only a great talent, he was also a very nice guy, unlike Buddy who was hated by both his band and manager. Buddy was a tremendous talent, but a prick of a person. There's a reason why Louie was often invited to the White House.

I have to agree there re Buddy, I saw him live at my High School in Parsippany NJ in '74 or so. He spent most of the time stalking around the stage, cocktail(s) in hand sniping at the performance of his band, all of whom looked to be young kids from Julliard ( spelling?) School of Music. He actually played drums for maybe a total of 15 minutes. The rest of the time, he was a jerk.

As I watched, in the beginning I said to myself "nothing new here that I haven't done back in my twenties and thirties - essentially one long snare drum roll at various speeds interrupted by occasional tom and cymbal attacks. Then at 4:16, we get into some serious cymbal work (that you don't see very often), and surprisingly, among this (if you are very attentive you will catch it) a small tribute to John Bonham from his Moby Dick solo. Also a nod to Zeppelin and Bonham's tom/bongo solo work in "Four Sticks" at 5:08 (did you get it - literally four sticks). A great drummer to be sure. But after thirty years of drumming, almost continuous snare rolls used as a solo make me yawn.

Bellson was mainly the double bass, a LOT of rolls, repetition of patterns and chops in EVERY solo - Sure, that what he played was good, whatever he played was technically great but I don't see LB as very creative. Someone has to say it
