The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

He just walked out and he's covered in sweat. He was practicing for hours before he went on, a level of professionalism not seen today.

Louis Armstrong. Here he is - he’s an old man. He’s 63 years old,” Louis Armstrong Knocks Out The Beatles. The last hurrah for one of the legends of American jazz and for a type of American music that, after this time, would never again be as popular.🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

This arrangement is by Turk Murphy who did it at the behest of Lotte Lenya, wife of Kurt Weill, who wrote the original German operetta. Turk told Louis he should record this, but Louis hesitated until he learned that Lotte Lenya had sold a million copies in Germany. There is a recording of Louis, Turk, and Lotte in the studio doing the original recording. SONY, (actually probably CBS) SONY Classical MHK 60647. So all of the versions you have heard is the Turk Murphy arrangement, even Bobby Darin. Turk got $700.00 for his work, which is now the only version that you hear. There is a pic of Lotte and Turk at Earthquake McGoon's in San Francisco, when she asked him to make the German song more American Traditional Jazz. As an aside she played the villain (Krebs) in the movie, "From Russia with Love." People thought a lot of her and the song has a very long and interesting history. It has nothing to do with America but describes the docks in Germany, but with some passage of time and some American interpretation, people think New Orleans. Oh, well. No black people were in the original, at all. Somebody should do a story about the derivation of traditional jazz songs, but probably no one wants to hear that. Ken Burn's "Jazz" TV series is mostly an apology piece. At least he did put some of the music in it.

Oh, and at the end of this Louis puts in names of black women (names from other songs) then adds Lotte Lenya, as a tribute. She loved it.

Thank you that is interesting....and i had no idea there was a movie connection, or any names were real. Saw the Bobby Darin movie "Beyond the Sea" and wanted to hear Louis's version of Mack the Knife.

Lotte Lenya! I first saw Lotte Lenya in “From Russia with Love”. She was Agent Klem, the woman with the knife in her shoe! I had no idea she was a singer.
