Ck is really trying to tell Shane you don't have to milk the cow dry, give the people the experience without a lot of interruptions and they will pay you back 10fold, money is the journey not the end of it all.
This is exactly it. The message was that multiple ad-centric revenue streams is taking too much from the fan. Pick one, focus on the entertainment, get paid more by your craft and less by your ad partners.
@@shalakabooyaka1480 Probably because he knows he's good enough to not have to water down his content with cheesy ads that take away from the experience.
Louis is 100% right, Shane is making money hand over fist, i'm pretty sure I read his subscription numbers are 3-4x Flagrant which definitely has a higher overhead. Patreon's are good but if thats not going back to the content directly you are just stealing from fans, especially when everyone knows how much podcast sponsors pay.
Louis keeping it real. He is half joking but he was doing Shane a HUGE favor by doing those history episodes to put on Shane's RU-vid. I guarantee you that Louis asked for nothing as long as they did it at his place. So now Shane basically tells him he is going to eff with Louis' fans by having them watch adds for 3 episodes and then have to pay $5 to Shane (and crew) to see the last one. They showed Louis some respect in the end. Left the episode on RU-vid for free and left this clip in to give Louis credit for being the reason it stayed free.
@@mewhzy1501 5 USD is almost a full day's wage on Brazil's minimum wage. And there are places poorer and cheaper on wages than Brazil that are fans of Louis and Gillis alike. Not everyone is lucky like you, if you can afford it great. Proud of you and more likely proud of your parents for having you in a rich country. You don't have to give a shit about the world around you, but why piss your pants publicly and let everyone know you have a limited worldview?
It reminds me of the Louie episode where Louis and David Lynch's character have the "be funny" conversation and Louis makes a fool of himself and then leaves while his agent, who is very Gardini-esque, is just sitting on the couch and Lynch goes "please leave this room". Funny shit.
I think Louis was half-joking, but also genuinely realized that this podcast was pure gold, that would be incoherent if half of it was behind a pay wall. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest things that ever happened in podcasting.
This was actually super interesting series I just spree trough. I'm from europe and yes I enjoy history but it was just the right balance of comedy and history. I did hope they would have gone a bit deeper in some newer ministerations tho but it was sooo good nonethless.
@@ghiidra__ cool? No not really 😅 It's highly corrupt and some places in it closer to a third world country than anything, still Today. Doing global messes constantly and being super good with propaganda. Like it's aight, but it's just like any big country, screwed up but just in it's own way. As everyone ofcourse I do like US entertainment even tho it's been on Massive scale going down in quality since 2010ish and is at it's rock bottom.. I'm interested in figures.. all around the globe and who cannot say that say, Roosevelt isn't a super interesting character. Louis C.K is super interesting just by himself and a very good storyteller. What more do you need out of this? History is interesting.. okay? Not my problem that most americans aren't At All interested about anything going outside of USA.
Not really though. Tv has always had commercials and you pay, pretty new to be able to pay and not have ads. Even then there is so much product placement, etc. Marketers ruin everything. They def ruined the internet.
Yeah DAZN pisses me off now that everything is DAZN ppv. The price went way up, and many of the big boxing fights on there (Canelo, etc) which used to be part of the service are now an additional ppv fee
That fact people still pay for events when there is hundreds of websites that give you the same access as someone who spent an arm and a leg for the event
I remember Norm Macdonald's podcast, where Seinfeld asked him how much he was making by doing it, and Norm answered "nothing." Ten years later and I still watch those episodes. Man, Norm was grate.
Louis has always been on the side of helping his fans. that's why he would always sell his tickets directly and have his stand ups on his website to prevent scams and price gouging
@@ynyfoodservice4456"Shane does the same thing." Hahah, Shane just released a special on a platform for millions of dollars. A platform he was calling dogshit, trash, woke media less than a year ago. You are dense as fuck 😂 I like shane as much as the next guy but naw, shane definitely doesn't do "the same thing"
@@rippspeck He was the first comic that I remember doing this. I believe he started that trend but I could be wrong. He also made a killing with that concept but it obviously would be scary for anyone’s first time.
I appreciate seeing the human moment Shane had digesting the interaction. Felt that. Shane was really put on the spot. Louie could have talked to him about it when they weren’t recording and given him advice less publicly but Louie ck is on point with what he said. He’s had a long career and has a good instinct when it comes to an audience. I’m sure it helped Shane In the end.
Louis CK is absolutely right. If you're going to put your content behind a paywall don't then make your paying audience have to sit through more adds. It's why I stopped paying for RU-vid premium - sure there's no more adds between videos but then the content creators will spend 5-10min anyways talking about "the sponsor" of the video. fuckin ads everywhere. Shane is already doing pretty well, why make his audience have to sit through more ads just so you can earn a few extra bucks. Louis is a wise guy.
Eh I'd rather have half the adds that I can skip rather than add a whole other half that I can't. It's why I still pay for premium as well as for music cause I don't care for Spotify
What’s the relevance of him holding out ? He’s now doing them now, are they less “gay “ all of a sudden ? I respect him less now for sure, stick to you’re guns. You don’t like the fact you not making money quit the podcast but be true to yourself
Yeaa CK put this one on his tab haha. to be frank, all this fishing for donations and stuff got way to much. Back in the days ppl just enyoied creating content without expecting any financial surplus. I understand why it changed but its still sad
@@bloxxbergidk if I'd call it sad. It natural for you want to get paid for your time so you can continue funding your ability to put out more content, is it possible to be excessive to the point of being off putting? Yes. But I'd argue it's just as arrogant to expect someone to give you their time, energy and creativity for "the love of the game"
I feel this, I hate paying for a subscription to something and then be forced to listen to ads still. Like I can skip them.. but i'm already paying for it why should I have to
I don’t think he was being dismissive I think he was genuinely embarrassed about being (half jokingly) scolded by a legendary comedian and probably one of his idols.
@@spiralbones for real, louis is one of the highest paid comics of all time. shane has a successful patreon and sells tickets - im sure he's doing really well - but he isn't set for life like louis. wack as hell
@@Rams4life94 This exactly!... How anyone else interprets it any differently is puzzling to me. He was embarrassed, and was genuine when he meekly said to Louie "I wish you would stop this." He meant that shit with no humor intended.
@@mikeyo3377 idk bro after Shane said that he just powered through & started doing the ads anyway lol. he mightve thought reading the ads right then would be funny but it seemed like he was arguing when I watched. Could've been both, who knows
He didn’t want to dick in his best buddy but it’s 100% to make sure Matt keeps his family fed and healthy. Shane’s not about that greed shit…he turned down the best job at the finest comedy institution in America for this. #SNL survivor
I love louis for this. The Presidents was such a great series, and I never would have joined the Patreon in a million years. Grateful that Shane changed his mind.
That History podcast was not just hilariously funny, but i actually learned something too. Louie the legend and Shane the new upcoming comic. Hats off to ye lads
CK asking smaller comedians why they need money as he sits in his glasshouse in the woods after having his own show and sell out arenas for 20 years. Irony is ironically ironed out
I feel so bad for Shane. On an LOS podcast a long time ago, he boasted that they don't do ads on their podcast. "Ads are gay!" (and admitted they where losing out on so much money because of that). Now he sits there being shamed (half jokingly), for having multiple adds and a patrion split episode.
You know what’s great about being a consumer? You get to pick what you want. You got some moral hang up about ads? Find ads annoying? Hate “greed”? This is entertainment. It’s a not a need. You motherf*ckers act like it’s a constitutional right. Go read a book or book or something. I guarantee it’s a lot cheaper & likely more entertaining. Whatever you do, stop whining.
"We look like fools" man I felt that. I met Chrissy D blacked out I think and said I was his father for some reason, laughed awkwardly, without saying anything else walked away wishing a fucking plane crashed on my head. I've been in 5 alarm fires and didn't panic like that 😂 fucking up infront of someone you respect blows hard.
lol had a 'friend' with a xan problem years ago. 3 of us went to a concert & after it ended 2 of us managed to meet by far my favorite producer/artist ever in the venue's back alley. My fav artist & his gf were even down to smoke a blunt with us right there (note: xan friend was not with us outside yet). About halfway through the blunt my xan'd out friend finally started walking down the alley towards our smoke circle of amazing vibes & great conversation (was literally perfect btw). Mr. Xan was so fucked up that when he heard us call his name, you could see his 1 remaining brain cell light up as realized it was us - after which he then proceeded to start ranting about how ass the opener's set was & how she sucked the energy out of the room. Yeah, the opener was the long time girlfriend of my favorite artist... aka he (headliner) & her (opener) were literally standing in the smoke circle my 'friend' just walked up to & ranted to. She looked devastated & started to cry - we tried to say my 'friend' was just blacked out, but he just said "its fine man" as she was walking away sobbing & then he quickly followed after her. So yeah, I know the feeling man. And I respect that you take responsibility for your incident. Unfortunately, I never got the closure that i'd get if my 'friend' actually acknowledged his actions that night... he was so fucked up that he denied he even said that & he denied that they were standing there with us when he walked up. fuck man lol, I am heated just thinking about it.
@@von... Man I feel so bad for you and your situation and I also realize I shouldve worded mine differently, I wasn't on anything my stupid brain started short circuiting. It was the weirdest thing, like I had a million things to say at once and my brain reverted back to his first bit I seen I think and verbally diarrhea'd on him lol. Idve killed your friend 😅, that's a once and a lifetime opportunity and the fact he won't take responsibility for a screw up shows the type of person he is honestly.
The questions Louie is asking are the same I do all the time and Gillis answers confirm my suspicions that many content creators never really stop to think this stuff through.
Exactly. They'll love to talk about how tv is dead and cuting the middle man. But they're pretty much using the same model. Pay for anything extra, ads here ads there. When in the beginning doing pods was only to increase your audience
They’re money grubbers. They see $$$ and suddenly all self respect goes out the window and they force people that tune in to sit through bs ads or buy a patreon or both like we all need another fucking subscription
@@roarbertbearatheon8565 But I think they are not even that competent at money grubbing. In their desperation to pinch pennies, I think they often end up making choices that earn them less total money long term.
Louis maybe have done some questionable things in his time, but he has ALWAYS been like this. He offered a special where you go to the site and pay what you wanted. He also gave staff bonuses. Legend.
Same with JRE, I buy the fucking Spotify membership to skip through all the jre ads and then I get hit with 4 fucking AG1 ads a better help ad and a fucking zip recruiter ad…
@@bl0p3z01 your able to fast forward through the ads and also I have some friends who use Spotify and we share playlist and also Spotify has great algorithms for similar artist and exclusive performances
Neither are I’m the wrong, Louis is very correct on the pod being pure gold and it would be cool if every bit was on patreon, it has nothing to do him being a millionaire already (Louis) but Shane is also not in the wrong because he does wanna build up revenue to support all his buddies working for him and because he deserves it? Shane is the best thing to happen to the comedy scene in a minute and I love both these guys but no reason to hate on either
I hate to pile on Shane here, but all the podcasts I listen to they record the ads at another time and splice them in later and then it cuts in and out from the guest interview. You never do the ads with the guest sitting there. Shane will just live and learn. He seems like a good dude. 😂
Everyone in the comments is so mad and serious about this. Everybody has to have a hot take on every issue in the whole world nowadays and it's just exhausting
All these companies now do this & it should be made illegal. You should not be able to charge customers a fee & still hammer them with ads, cause as Louie rightfully said "I'm paying to NOT get advertised to".
When you nickel and dime everything people start to catch on and realize you want to be paid at every turn. Should you get paid? Yes you should. But should every clip have an ad and subscription attached to it? No.
He is not "spot on". MSSP has the most patreon members of any podcast at 70,000. 2nd place is only 40k. They were in the top 10 for over 2 years before taking first.
@@jackoverton8343 he's just skeptical that the podcast will get 1,000 new listeners from this. And that those 1,000 new listeners would stay forever. And if he's making $350,000 a month off of his 70,000 patrons already why does he still need more? And that if people are already subscribed and paying $5 a month they shouldn't have to listen to ads being read.
Ya I mean I would never pay for a pateron of anything just feels like you’re doing the same thing with an onlyfans girl as you would a comedian, can’t do ads and pateron I agree with Louie here, and he hasn’t made any real money since he got blue balled
Shane is loaded now, so is Matt with his brothers, and every podcast has useless editors (although I love the intros) that are getting moneys from the ad revenue. It is greedy to extend your conversation an hour and put it behind a paywall. Louis speaking facts on this one.
We probably have different definitions of loaded. And Shane in the clip seems to disagree with you as well because he specifically says for the other guys and Matt who has a family.
I get why he was upset with his fans not getting the full thing. But you gotta give it to Shane his exact words “no I don’t need the money matt has a family “ bro is looking out for his dawg you gotta love him just for that
oh yea the guy who put his special on his website for $$ instead of RU-vid for free. Go get Shane.. definitely not hypocritical guy! Btw I love Louis but if this isn’t just a bit then idk seems lame.
@@ZeRoUnload That makes no sense. Louis is calling him out for doing ads AND switching to Patreon as its a double dip. Louis hosting stuff on his own site and charging for it is fine, if he charged for it AND made you listen to ads you might have something but he doesn't so go pound sand.
I don't know why, and I very well might be wrong, but I get the distinct impression that the ad reads and the Pateron money, is largely given to Matt, Gardini and Lemaire. Shane strikes me as the kind of guy who got a bit of success and immediately was like "I want all my friends to be famous with me, too, so we can all hang out, all the time." He's a sweetheart, and idk, I don't have proof, but like I said, I reckon Matt and co. leave with about 70% of that money to support their families and keep doing this kind of work, because Shane knows that he has plenty of revenue.
Louis used to be a broke and starving comedian living gig-to-gig in New York in the 90's, he knows what it's like to be an average American. Shane Gillis, funny guy, gods bless him, comes from an upper middle-class background. He's just doing what he assumes is normal; maximize your profit.
@@jarrettthomas4865what are you talking about? Louis had his first special almost 30 years ago around 25 years old. Shane is 35 and just becoming relevant past couple years.
