Louis Joseph Ferdinand Hérold (28 January 1791 - 19 January 1833), better known as Ferdinand Hérold, was a French operatic composer of Alsatian descent who also wrote many pieces for the piano, orchestra, and the ballet. He is best known today for the ballet La fille mal gardée and the overture to the opera Zampa.
At the age of six, he attended the Hix Institute and excelled in his studies. While there, he also took musical theory with François-Joseph Fétis (who later edited the periodical La Revue musicale). At the age of seven, he played piano and composed some piano pieces.
He enrolled in the Conservatoire in 1806 and was schooled in piano by Louis Adam (father of the composer Adolphe Adam). He also was instructed by Charles Simon Catel (in harmony), Rodolphe Kreutzer (in violin), and Étienne Méhul (in composition). Hérold during these times at the Conservatoire became a virtuoso on piano and violin.
In 1810 he won first prize in a piano competition with one of his own compositions. He progressed so far in his studies that in 1812 he won the Prix de Rome. In Rome, during 1811-1813, he composed his first symphony, which all Prix de Rome winners were required to do in order to show their progression in studies, and also he completed four piano concertos: No. 1 in E major, No. 2 in E-flat major, No. 3 in A major, No. 4 in E minor.
Piano concerto no.3:
I. Allegro maestoso-9:26
II. Andante con violino obligato-4:55
III. Rondo Moderato-6:28

The second movement here is divinely beautiful and romantic. It almost sounds like a modern melody and nothing like something from the 18th century.

Very good review of the site. In this concert, in the andante, the presence of the "obligato" violin is appreciated.

Herold was a wonderful melodist and used his talent well to produce four fine piano concertos. I'm glad that three of them are on YT in great performances; is the First Concerto lost, or merely unrecorded, I wonder?

Thank you for your interest in Herold's music. About concert no 1 I know only what is written in the album notes: "the present recording voluntarily omits Concerto no.1 in E major, the manuscript of which is difficult to decipher because of the large number of erasures, second thoughts and cuts of various kinds it contains. So much so, in fact, that we can by no means be sure of restoring a version Herold would have approved. Proceeding from the principle that not every rarity is necessarily worth rehabilitating, we decided it was preferable not to include the work in the programme of the present disc."

@@sibarit101 Kind of like looking all over for Ries' mysteriously missing first piano concerto
@sibarit101
@sibarit101 3 года назад
@@knownfact4905 Ries composed only 8 piano concertos. Since his first concerto was for violin and it was numbered with no. 1 (in his native Bonn Beethoven had been taught violin by Ries’s father), his piano concertos were given numbers 2-9. So there is no mystery! :) Thank you!

The first movement of this concerto and J L Dussek's concerto #11 in E flat Op. 70 are very similar. I wonder if either of the two composers got ideas from the other.
@sibarit101
@sibarit101 6 лет назад
If one of them was inspired by the other's music, then I think Herold is "the guilty": Dussek's music was very popular, Dussek wrote his concert in 1810, and Herold wrote his piano concertos between 1811-1813. Whatever the truth, I thank you for your comment that made me re-listen to both concertos.

Thank for your comment. It is fun to hear about how composers got their ideas.

Perhaps Herold favored the piano over the violin - as far as I know he wrote no solo works for the violin. I like this concerto although i don't think I could sight read it. I love the violin solo in this piece at 9:24. Thank you 101 - once again. (I believe the numbers you posted are the length of each movement and not the beginning of each movement?)
@sibarit101
@sibarit101 6 лет назад
Yes, indeed, I have always written the length of each movement, as it is on the CD, not the beginning. The truth is that I "re-record" every piece of music before posting it, shortening the breaks between movements that seem too long on the CD. That's why it's a little difficult for me to indicate the very beginning of each movement. Thank you. I wish you a nice weekend.
