I’m a construction contractor and worked in an open prison in Scotland which has minimal security, the prisoners get work day release in public and get home one weekend a month, basically a walk in the park and mostly it’s for people who are well behaved and minimum risk or people coming to the end of long sentences to get back into a routine for outside. We had a prison guard escort but were never in any danger, but our escort pointed out that when inmates pass each other they shake hands or greet each other whereas sex offenders and people who’ve committed any crime against a woman or child (known as beasts) don’t hang around in big crowds and the other prisoners ignore them. Normally in a secure prison they would be segregated but in this place they weren’t because if you get in trouble you lose all your perks and go back to a harsher closed prison so these people are mostly free to walk around which to me was a massive shock.

These systems actually work very well for those with non-violent offenses, like petty theft, repeat dwis, drug selling etc. And even for those convicted of more serious crimes like assualt, if it's deemed that they don't pose a risk to the surrounding community. I wrote a term paper awhile back on prison reform, I focused a lot on the Norwegian and other Scandevian prison systems. The main ethos of their correctional system is that the loss of freedom is the punishment, not the prison environment itself. Many prisons there operate on the system you just outlined; released to work during the day (or even if they don't work they're allowed out, especially to access things like medical services and visit family), back in at night. The prisons themselves often don't look like prisons, a lot don't even have a fence or a locking door, just a guard few guards surrounding some dormitories. And they're immediately given a case worker to help them figure out shit like applying for benefits, setting up bank accounts etc. basically everything they'd need to be set up after they get out including even finding apartments for them. The end result is that people get out set up to actually pursue a life as a human being, and are not just shat out into the cold with nothing more than what they walked in their with (the American system). And while they're inside there isn't the motive to commit violence like there is in the american system were even a person sent to jail for ignoring a bench warrant is going to have to get in a least one altercation. When you treat men like animals, they act like it. Treat them like human beings, and you'll find the vast majority of convicts actually don't want to commit violence or go postal at the local town pub. Recidivism is still an issue in the nordic system, but nowhere near the american. About 20% of Finnish ex-convicts are re-arrested, that number is 75% in the states. Numbers speak for themselves, the american prison system needs massive reform asap (fat chance, there would go all those -slaves- prison labourers).

Thing is, not all sex criminals are dangerous. Some are cases of people who entered relationships with minors which may even have been totally consensual but, because the other person was under 18 (or whatever the legal age of consent is), it's statutory rape which is still a crime for which you have to serve time. In cases like that, it is up to the judge to take into account every mitigating factor (age, no criminal history or genuine intent to victimise someone) and impose, if they so decide, a lighter sentence and ideally not served in a hardcore place, one that doesn't ruin who you are any more than being a registered sex offender and a felon already does. I have heard of one case where a girl from my school got into a relationship with a guy from the year above, when we were in our last years or thereabouts. Their relationship continued after he left school and he had a really early birthday (sometime in Feb or March), which meant he turned 18 quite early and she was still 17, and we knew they were hooking up since before then, but he'd now be tried as an adult if they ever got caught. No one ever said anything and they managed to keep their entire relationship a secret from the teachers and their parents for years, lying about only meeting/becoming an item when they were in college and 20-21, which was important because we're a country that's generally quite conservative when it comes to relationships and sex, and the kinds of parents we get, for sure would report the guy to the police for rape if they actually found out. Note I'm not saying consent and sex rules shouldn't exist, they absolutely should, but it's worth trying to understand how they and excessively conservative cultures do pose a risk to some. A person's life shouldn't be ruined because of genuine young love, or from a single mistake.

@@gregoryborton6598 it’s close to incomparable though. In Scandinavian countries we are talking, for the most part, about people raised in relative comfort, taught right from wrong, homogenous, reasonably educated, no major street gang culture, less hard drugs on the street. A lot of the people in American prison are already lost causes sadly. Then there’s the population size to take into account. There are just too many variables that make the US and even the most densely populated areas of a Scandinavian country basically incomparable. It’s close to an apples and oranges type situation. It would be impossible to take their approach to reform in the US.

hardwire Your “paperwork” (criminal record) is essentially your driver’s license in prison. When you show up to a yard (whether new or transferred) your race will approach you and demand to see your paperwork. If you have a certain set of charges and history (chomo, snitch, dropout, etc), you will be killed. If you are not a chomo, snitch, or dropout, they will look at the number of years you are serving and determine how they will use you for carrying out their violent acts in the yard. Ie. guys will little time will often be forced to do the killing and stabbing on behalf of guys with more time because they want to get out, and the guys with little time “can afford to fit a 5-7 on their sentence”. At the end of the day, the white boys and Surenos (the gang these guys in the video are in) would have eventually found the guys’ paperwork, found his charges and murdered him shortly after this video was released. You cannot hide for long and if you try to hide often times they will make it worse because you embarrassed their race and made them look bad.

@Tristo Smitty children are the most vulnerable members of society, human biology has evolved so that they are powerless for many years and during those formative years they rely on the social nature of humans for protection. Taking advantage of this to commit sexual assault is perverted on many levels, and is a massive betrayal of the basic tenets of society that we rely upon in order to function as a healthy larger community as well as sadly being extremely damaging to the victim. As populations grow larger this trust becomes more important, and the crimes of these sick people become even more unforgivable, which is reflected in prison populations where there are a lot of cognizant if criminal people. Hopefully that explains why child abuse and assault is seen as one of the worst crimes someone can possibly commit.

Berkeley, an inmate-run newspaper that is distributed, and a podcast; The Warriors have outreach where they play Basketball games against the inmates and have beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. Not to make light of it, but there could be worse prisons. In my mind the South would be bloody awful. Possibly dying of boredom.
