I like Korrasami more for what it did for representation in children's animation than the ship itself. I mean maybe it's a coincidence but I noticed alot more open lgbtq representation after Korra's finale.

Dude it's just the truth that girls are close and comfortable w each other and show lots of affection I honestly couldn't tell anything was up I love korrasami but I never saw any romantic development. I really could've thought they were just friends if I didn't already know the ending/pairing

I didn't have a problem with them introducing homophobia my problem is with how they did it. They pretty much associated the fire nation as the most homophobic because they were "the bad guys". It would have made more sense for the Northern water tribe, who had far more traditional roles as far as gender goes. It doesn't make much sense for the fire nation because it's women were much more independent. From serving as prison guards to becoming the fire lord. It would have made more sense for them to not really care about it at all.
@rubyfireclaws

Didn't they say the fire nation had been tolorent up until sozin. To me it would make sense for both the fire and air nations to be accepting and the water and earth one less than so

I've never been great at reading between the lines, so I may have misunderstood this differently, but from Kya's word, it was my understanding that the Earth Kingdom the most reluctant to embrace same-sex relationship, not the Fire Nation.

For anyone who didn't see the relationship coming and don't like it for that reason, for what it's worth, I didn't either, but after thinking it over I do support it and I can see how it developed. If either Asami or Korra were a male character, then their relationship wouldn't come as a shock to many. They were best friends and they had fairly intimate moments of supporting each other. As a straight woman I fall into the unfortunate habit of sometimes just assuming characters are straight, and therefore I subconsciously rule out developing chemistry of two characters of the same sex. But when looking back, there's no point at which Korra or Asami states that they're straight, so there's no reason to assume they are. Also, I realized that they're not saying that Korra and Asami are in love by the end of the tv series, but they just have feelings for each other. And tbh, having feelings for someone doesn't require a huge build up in a series imo. I think the comics do a good job continuing their relationship and helping readers understand how it came to be. While I don't like that Asami sometimes falls into the trope of a damsel in distress, I think that besides that they do a good job of portraying a healthy, young relationship while keeping the characters' personalities largely the same.

Whether intentional or not, it kinda works like a twist ending where if you go back and watch the season again you can identify the hints that you missed even though it was already obvious to others.

Korrasami became my ship mid-way through season 2. I really enjoyed their growing friendship and consider them to be my self-indulgent canon ship. I read all of the signs as leading towards a romantic relationship. It reminded me a lot of how most of my crushes developed. The best-friends-to-lovers progression is so common among queer girls. When it actually happened though, I was shocked. I actually screamed with joy. I never thought that Bryke would go there or that Nick would allow it to happen. I've been keeping up with Korrasami through the comics, I had pre-ordered each installment months in advance. The story is a little shaky, but the relationship has developed beautifully. And the artwork is gorgeous!!!!!

The only thing I don’t like about it is that it didn’t become clear during the show itself. Not for me, I’m happy with the comics. I’m just kind of sad the children did not experience, imagine a little girl realizing she could like boys and girls.

I don't feel like the "damsel in distress"-trope really applies to Asami here. Because her interjecting on the air ship really helped Korra. Also her being held hostage helped giving her moments with her fathers buisness partner. I can see how on the surface you can see it as a trope but it worked for me.

also, i have read the comics and really enjoyed the development of korra and asami’s relationship. however there were two things i didn’t like about the comics. i really wish that they hadn’t done the whole ‘asami needs saving’ thing because even though asami is a non-bender i’ve always thought of her to be very smart and a physically strong character. i also wish that we had seen more of the original gang together as i always loved their dynamics. as an lgbt person at first i did wish that the avatar universe was one free from prejudice and i didn’t really like that of course the fire nation made it illegal because they are always the very obvious scapegoat but now i actually feel like it is good that this exists because i think it can introduce younger readers to ideas like homophobia. as always great video!

Oh goodness! So many thoughts :). 1 I'm a hardcore korrasami shipper, and lok is like the only fandom i actively take part in. so i was very excited for this comic. and personally it was mostly exactly what i wanted. a comic that focused on korrasami and moved the plot along at a kinda of transitional pace. i expected the conflict to be smaller with a less dynamic villain. i was happy the focus for this first outing was on the relationship and i thought for the most part it was handled beautifully and i adored their interplay. cause i really believe this is a very sweet, supportive relationship and it's one of the only times i've ever shipped a couple lol. so in that way i was majorly happy! 2 my only tiny gripe, was it's kinda a personal crusade of mine that Asami was awesome and very capable in her own way, so i was a little sad to see her taken out in fights way more than she was in the show. but i was happy to see how the trilogy ended with her very much working with Korra to solve the problems so it wasn't a major detraction 3 like i said i was happy the plot remained smaller. like it wasn't the major selling point for me in this run. though i am hoping and expecting the next arch to be more impactful, and it seems to actually be what i hoped a book five would be, with the fallout of the earth empire and kuvira's trial. so i think we're going in an amazing direction. i can't wait to see more of this world and i'm excited for what the future holds for korrasami. so i'm very happy with the fandom at the moment! Though i'll always love fic book fives i've read along with other fan continuations. it's such a wonderful and creative community and i'm so happy it's still going! amazing vid! Glad to see a kinda of history and analysis of this pair! and you came at it very fairly

I've been a Korrasami shipper since the second half of season three. I wasn't expecting it to become canon, though, so I was completely thrilled when it did. I haven't checked out the comic yet, I guess it sort of fell off my radar, but now I really want to read it. Gotta go add it to my Comixology wish list!

I suppose the biggest thing for me to note regarding my experience with turf wars is that the sequel series will be including Kuvira. I enjoyed it, though I also agree that it had some moments that felt as you put it, "condensed." I do find the Korrasami ship enjoyable and have read some fanworks with them, but Kuvira as a character I view, possibly controversially, as the best villain the korra series had. I look forward to seeing how Ruins of the Empire turns out. I guess regarding this topic of korrasami and the comic, it felt like korra to me, and that's all i wanted it to do. And I hope it continues to do so.

The day the final episode aired and the day the first comic came out are both such happy memories for me. I’m so happy that they made Korrasami canon in the show before it ended. Perfect ending in my opinion. And I also loved how they continued the story in the comics, especially when they showed the vacation in the spirit world! I’d wanted them to go the spirit world together for a long time before the finale.

My complaint with the comic was the one you mentioned in the video: the villian felt very underwhelming compared with the villians of the TV show. Korra was always a show about big idealogies, so this one felt a little too small. I thought that with the whole "Rich guy claiming to own the Spirit Portal" perhaps we were going to explore Capitalism as an ideology and its consequences, but it wasn't that deep. I enjoyed the comic though, I did like the way the handled the relationship and it was overall pretty enjoyable, it definately had its moments even outside of Asami and Korra's relationship.

1: Did you check out the comic, and what did you think? I have read all of them basically as soon as they released! As a Bisexual person, i relate to both of those characters so much, and adore their relationship. Seeing it continued and developed further in the comics was amazing! Yah it was cliche', but i say, let the homosexual pairings get the cliches for once!! I mean, is it really a cliche when not so many have done it with homosexual pairings?? Anyways though, i realize the story was a little poor on the story plot side, but i think for the goal they set out to reach of establishing the korrasami relationship, they did a great job. 2: Did you feel like fandom already did it better? Hm...to be honest, i haven't looked too much into the korrasami fandom itself, i mostly stick to canon content, and maybe a video or two i see pop up on youtube. So i don't really know if i can answer that one too well, but i know that i think the canon did a fine job. Maybe it's not EXACTLY what people had in mind, but it's still a leap in the right direction. I really enjoyed how they portrayed the relationships here. 3: Are you a korrasami shipper ...I don't think i really have to answer that at this point XD But i have a question to ask YOU! It's uh...it's just a suggestion lol. I know you'll probably already be covering this since...well...so many people are already talking about it. But, do you plan to talk about She-ra, and the Princesses of Power? There's already a bunch of ships blowing up on that show. (Mainly Catadora, the Pairing between Catra and Adora.) I just think it would be cool, i already love the show and the writing is actually really good and dense for the characters. (My fav rn is Catra because i just feel like they are setting up her character so well and she's super interesting and Diverse!) I really liked this sort of squeal video to korrasami, and i will never forget that pairing as long as i live.

i tend to stick to anime and manga so i'm used to both formats, but i will say i agree with the writer that switching is harder than it looks. i tried turning one of my older fanfics into a comic and it's hard to decide which parts of the scene deserve the panels, how close you should be, the position of dialog bubbles and if the should include people not in the panel, etc. i don't know why or how liking het ships means you're homophobic.

Occationally i'll say the same thing if i'm being salty but i can't say i agree in this case. Not that i'm heavily involved in the fandom. I'm really not but i'm thinking of getting more into it. 3. I do ship it. Not as much as a lot of people do thought. I never really shipped anything in korra since i didn't feel a terribly strong to connection to any of the characters when watching. (With a few exceptions). I LOVE what explicit romance there was between them in the show but i also think it was needlessly sparce. I think if i got more content i would like them more. Right now i'm pretty firmly rooted in the "casually apriciative of queer rep" side of things. Which is fine. The art is cute and i'm sure the comics are good and i'm excited to buy and read them.

I wonder if anyone else shares my theory that LGBT representation was attempted in the first Avatar series? I know I am going into conspiracy levels here but I would be interested to hear what people think. Okay, so I think that in season 2 ranging from when Zuko is entering into Ba Sing Se to the season finale we see Zuko in conflict with his identity and what do we get during this time? He meets Jet (first person he interacts with that is not a part of his crew, his uncle or an enemy), has his first kiss (which he immediately runs away from) and confronts his choices (good or bad). I don't think this is a coincidence, as an LGBT person myself rewatching the old series, I can see myself in Zuko here and the conflict he faces with his identity (and possibly even his sexuality). I do think this was done deliberately. But, at the time they couldn't push for representation in the cartoon because it was a different time and fandom was very different to what it is now, it was dominated by het ships (no hate, for a long time I shipped Zutara!) But I do think this influenced the creators to only create small hints and nothing more. However, now looking back I do think there was something there and I am happy to see the creators are now able to fully embrace this :)

I read the first Turf War; it was okay, the art was nice and the dynamics believable. I guess I just dropped it because LOK never grabbed me as much as ATLA, and while I was happy that Korrasami happened, it felt like too little, too late, and this comic installment was meant as a, "no, no, we really did mean it this way all along!" which I find hard to swallow.
@queendsheena1
@queendsheena1 5 лет назад
I am thinking of one day buying these comics. I'm also looking forward to getting the Avatar: TLA continuation which is a fave series of mine. 1. I'm glad they decided to make Korra's feelings happen late in the tv series because I think that makes the scenario more real for those who never saw it until the ending. I hope future cartoon mainstream series will be more overt in femme pairings. 2. I'm fine with the reality added to the series including homophobia. But not so into retconning Sozin as a raging homophobe. I just feel like it's a forced act to take away freedom from fans to potentially like the villain or see him as redeemable. I don't believe every bad quality in the fire nation only came from Sozin's rule and onwards. 3. I'm glad the couple is still going strong. 4. While I'm intrigued by the politics from the excerpts it seems there's a push to make the current president look bad just because he's not into the spirit world portal being open. Sorry, but many humans would be freaked out by the sudden appearance of mythical creatures and spirits in their backyard. Plus if the spirit world appears on a person's land. They have a right to have a say. Just because you don't like the plans for an amusement park. Doesn't mean you have to act like the landowner is a trickster demon. Not everybody wants their land turned into a sanctuary. The option is plausible but landowners have rights.

I love Korrasami but the comics feels more like a fanfiction than a continuation. I don't like how we had almost no relationship in the show and now we have a relationship that those feels like they have been together for way longer than the small spend of time they actually became a couple. The comic is too centered around korrasami and not enough around the plot. I feel like the authors of lok and atla are really bad in the romance department. I also feels like Asami lost a lot of her character and personnality in the comics. She felt a lot more like Korra gf than her own character at times. The romance element was still better put in the lok comics than the atla comics(I remember flinching at the weird aangXkatara seen. they were just really bad). I think the fanfictions did better than the fanfiction comics. Still love Korrasami and will forever read fanfic on them but again the comics decepoints me in the romance parts.

as someone who didnt read the comics but watched the series, i like korrasami but i kinda dont want them to be endgame. one thing i liked about the series is how they dealt with relationships that lasted and relationships that ended and i feel like if korra ends up with the only woman she's been with, it'll be kinda "propagandish." i could just be being a salty bisexual who wants (at least) korra's bisexuality more well defined as opposed to it possibly being construed as one of those "im gay now" endgames *sips tea* but i feel like i like diverse romantic histories and even if she doesnt end up in my ship (korra x iroh) i'd also want to throw in one or 2 romances in the mix for korra like her and the beifong twins *cue laughter* or her and kuvira like post rehabilitation or during rehabilitation

I'm all for the gay community getting their light and it's a really progressive move but most avatar ships, I don't exactly support them, especially zutara or aang and Katara. Makorra was down the drain, though now that I think about it Korra and asami do make a good couple but I just hate how in season one they just kicked in asami to make her someone for the love triangle for a teenage romance plot. I feel that since they met because asami was makos girlfriend first it was bitter for Korra. I know that they made up for it and became friends and later girlfriends but it would be nice to see that they'd known each other in a nicer way rather than a harsh love triangle cus if that happened to me I'd just wouldn't forgive at all haha I don't know about any of you but I love Tarrlok and Korra. Have you seen Lantur's Strings? It is a masterpiece

Korrasami is a writing mechanism that took a failing plot and shifted the focus to a specific group, LGBT. By playing to this part of society, they were able to solidify an on-going fan base and not scrap this version of the Avatar Series, though it is still shallow and flawed. In order for this to work, both characters had to be involved with the wishy-washy Mako. This means the writers had to water-down this male character's persona. Season one presented Korra more as the damsel in distress, which I thought left a lot to be desired. If Korra was going to be bi-sexual, then a relationship where she meets Asami independent of Mako would have been more... well, valid. She may have also expressed an interest in other women along the way, including Lin Beifong. Even reading the comics, I get an air of insincerity and unwillingness to correct their direction. I think they should include Mako back into the relationship, to be honest, and make it a bi-sexual one, thus adding more conflict and diversity, and perhaps jealousy?

I read some of volume one hoping it would get me to liking this ship but....I just don't. Like, I didn't like how it got crammed in, I have issues with the creators and I do feel like they were leaning more towards pandering for brownie points from those of us that are LGBT+(personally I'm bisexual). But the comics just felt like the relationship was still rushed. And hearing about later stuff where Asami is just a damsel doesn't make me want to revisit it. That's not fair to her character. And to clarify, I did and still do like some of the elements of Makorra but I wanted her alone at the end. I felt like Korra needed a break to herself before rejoining her team. Or at least all four of them going together. Felt like a lot of volume 4 was sidelining Mako and Bolin and what they meant to her as friends.
