1979. Lyrics about a girl who thinks she's too good for the guy she's with. Wondering why Jeff Lynne repeatedly sings the word "groose" after the song's title line? Apparently it was a made-up place-keeper word to fill a gap in the vocals when he was improvising the lyrics. When the German engineer Reinhold Mack, who also worked with QUEEN, heard the ELO front man's demo he asked Lynne how he knew "Gruss" means "greetings" in his country's language. Upon learning the German meaning, Lynne decided to leave it in. Many fans misinterpreted "groose" as "Bruce." In fact, so many people misheard the lyric that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

LOVE THIS ONE! Electric Light Orchestra are legendary, as is their lead singer, Jeff Lynne. Your next ELO song HAS to be "Mr. Blue Sky" (which, if you've seen the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, you WILL recognize). Other fantastic songs of theirs are "Evil Woman", "Turn to Stone", and "Strange Magic". The 70s wouldn't have been the 70s without ELO! (Four decades later, I still don't know who Bruce is...) FYI - the line you're asking about is "I'll tell you once more, before I get off the floor, don't bring me down."

Mr. Blue Sky" is a song by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), featured on the band's seventh studio album Out of the Blue (1977). Written and produced by frontman Jeff Lynne, the song forms the fourth and final track of the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite, on side three of the original double album. "Mr. Blue Sky" was the second single to be taken from Out of the Blue, peaking at number 6 in the UK Singles Chart[2] and number 35 in the US Billboard Charts.[3] Maybe a hit in the UK but not in the States. I’m a big fan of ELO, I graduated HS in 77 and I don’t recall hearing this song over the radio.

“I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor” is the lyric you were missing. Jeff does NOT have a handlebar mustache. Google mustaches in your down time, if you even have any down time! There were complaints at the company when the orchestra sounds were drowned out by the guitars, but they worked it out. Most of the songs we got on the radio were very much strings and horns. Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Mr. Blue Sky, Evil Woman, Strange Magic, Turn to Stone, Telephone Line, you have a lot of classics to choose from.

ELO is awesome - I love this song. Please also check out the Super Group "The Traveling Wilburys" which Jeff Lynn was part of, along with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and George Harrison. The End of the Line is a track you will love!

Check out “Livin’ thing” and “telephone line” will definitely put the orchestra in your bonnet. I highly suggest picking videos from “wembley or bust” the 2017 tour in high-definition, Jeff Lynne (lead singer) says its the best the group has ever sounded, and I agree. It will bring meaning to “light” also.

I think you’d love Mr. Blue Sky by them. It’s so perfect for summertime! You must check out The Traveling Wilbury’s. A super group in the 90’s composed of Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison. I still listen to their album regularly!! ✌️💗😊

Jeff Lynne is a genius! They did a concert at Wembley Stadium in 2017 and you should react to something live from that concert. It is so good! I recommend Telephone Line, Turn to Stone, or Mr. Blue Sky. You will not be disappointed.

And now to my favorite group of all time back in the day and to this day! Yeah, this was more of a radio song and also dancing to it compared to Tightrope. LOVE my ELO! Won't have a bad reaction to any of their songs. Twilight, All Over The World, Telephone Line, Evil Woman, et al...any of them are great!

ELO are brilliant, save up your orchestral expectations for Mr Blue Sky - one of the happiest songs ever written - just make sure you listen to the complete album version, not a liver performance of radio edit.

A recommended top 11 ELO songs to react to… 1. Telephone Line (ELO’s magnum opus IMO) 2. Mr. Blue Sky (probably their most famous song to modern generations) 3. Evil Woman (first big hit) 4. Can’t Get it Out of My Head (their most gorgeous ballad) 5. Fire on High (instrumental track with no vocals, but just as grand and epic sounding as most of their work) 6. Turn to Stone (great mix of rock and orchestra) 7. Sweet Talkin Woman (an upbeat ballad) 8. Hold on Tight (ELO’s version of 50’s styled rock and roll) 9. Livin Thing (one of the best examples of their orchestral sound) 10. Do Ya (one of ELO’s more hard rocking tracks) 11. Strange Magic (essential ELO)

Hey guys - great to hear you reacting to another ELO (although one without the trademark strings!). I suggest (since you seem to love ELO) that you take a proper plunge and give 'Concerto for a Rainy Day' a listen from the album 'Out of the Blue'. It's a masterpiece comprising 4 songs that flow together to form a seemless piece of work - just like the symphony and concerto forms you find in classical music. It ends with the iconic 'Mr Blue Sky' - considered by many to be the best feel-good song ever written! And yes - there are strings! Lots! Don't Bring Me Down was the first ELO song not to feature strings. It comes off their 8th studio album released in 1979. The great thing about ELO is that you always know it's them but every song is unique and distinctive. Jeff is the master of cinematic, hook-laden layers of sound for getting lost in! Thanks for the reaction.

For a REALLY chill ELO track to listen to w/o a reaction I'd recommend Bluebird. It'll give you some perspective on their range. My favorite ELO song is Do Ya, but if you like the orchestral stuff you need to hear their 1973 cover of Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven.

ELO does have an orchestral sound in many of their songs, with violins, cells, and bass. That was their calling card. But, they did some hard rock, some pop, some disco, and some techno - just to show they could do it.
