Amber, you are so sweet and smart!😊 I'm so happy that you're really getting to understand what really was happening during the 60's and 70's. It IS important for your generation to know this history. Especially with the way things are right now. Your generation needs to take the torch now, and carry the message of peace and love into the future!!☮❤💛💚 Love ya, girl!!😘

Jay & Amber really hit it on the head. Thank you for acknowledging that the 60/70's generation changed the world. What Alvin Lee is singing about came to pass, nobody was saying this out loud until then. It sounds so simple and true and easy to understand to you, but at the time just singing this was revolutionary.

My husband and I are Baby Boomers. We grew up in times of wars, revolutions, assinations and the music of the times was there to help us deal with the pain and help us reflect on how we could bring peace and love in the middle of it all. Boundaries were changed and the music helped to make that happen and move forward with change. Definitely an unforgettable part of our lives..we lived through it all. People like you 2 learning, through music, about what we went through will keep us alive after we're gone.

Extra points, Jay, for correct use of the word groovy! :) This song is amazing when you stop to really listen. Alvin Lee said in an interview that the chorus was a serious statement. He didn't want to take a political position and in his words "almost didn't put the song forward" as a result. He knew he wasn't smart enough to solve all the worlds problems so it's up to us all to do it. This song has it all, great guitar work, great musicality, an important social statement, and it's got a great groove!

You're so right Amber! You two are both so genuine and so lovable. Here I am a 63 year old man (today is my birthday actually), and when I don't check in with RSR I feel like something is missing in my day. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I know 98% of the music that you react to, but it takes me back emotionally to the first time I heard these songs for myself! I laugh when you laugh, I cry along with you when you cry... you create this wonderful connection for all your subscribers that's addictive. I feel like your my dearest friends! It's maybe a little crazy, but I know this is true for apparently 400,000 people now! Relationships (for sure) are not always easy, but I sure hope that the two of you are honestly as in love with each other as you seem to be. You deserve this success. Just look at the hatred we have in this world. You probably don't even realize the magnitude of true goodness you spread to the (apparently) whole world. You're not going to run out of great music, or the stories behind the artists. I feel that I'm a better (a little bit anyway, Lol) and happier person to have you as a part of my life. You guys are great! I love you. Don't stop.

Alvin was a monster guitar player and the whole band was excellent. 1971 - I was a junior in high school and like almost everyone my age, were giant fans of Alvin. He was dubbed "the fastest guitar in the West", and there was no questioning that! Sadly, he died 10 years ago, and us old fan really miss getting new stuff from him.

The lyrical brilliance of this tune lies in this: Yes, it faces all the cultural and societal struggles of the late-60s & early 70s, but the narrator will do nothing to better the world. Dude's helpless and hopeless, don't know what to do - so he leaves it up to you. A lot of us feel resigned in our comfortable lives. I feel that I'D LOVE TO CHANGE THE WORLD is written from a selfish POV, from a character unwilling to do the hard thing to make the planet better. The real message of hope is the subtext. When we relate to our narrator, we expose our own pessimism. It's a song that challenges us to confront our worst selves. And that is Dylan-level songwriting. Then Alvin Lee gives this poetry that incredible vocal, and on top of all that, Alvin is one helluva guitar player! And Ten Years After is incredible!

Amber & Jay, another song with a similar message of world peace and love is “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)”, sung by the New Seekers and also from 1971. This song was originally written for a Coca Cola commercial, also from 1971. I think you both would love this and so would your children.

Another great "radio song" I've heard a million times. It was a time of change and revolution started in the 60's by "those bands" and then, bands of the 70's carrying the torch. Great song and band.

What's great is the stop-start theme of the verses, as if he was getting THE idea to change the world, then thought better of it : "I don't know what to do"

This is my first time watching your channel. I'm pleased that younger people are taking the time to learn about these late-60s & early-70s power bands. I was a huge Ten Years After fan when this album came out. I think the lyrics are born out of frustration, similar to what I was feeling. Twenty-something rockers were traveling the world, seeing all these problems. But everyone's "solutions" involved someone else's sacrifice. At the time, the UK was taxing high income earners over 80% and the musicians who were just getting their start were shocked to learn this (hence the lyrics "tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more"). The population was exploding and people wanted to have more and more children. There was a Vietnam War, a slaughterhouse for young American men. It seemed the World was going crazy, everyone knew it but no one wanted to take the steps necessary to change it.

Amber would be blown away by lead singer guitar phenom Alvin Lee’s song Bluest Blues. A collaboration with George Harrison is simply sublime.

Such a good tune! This is the song why I know this band. I heard it in a movie or two as a teenager, but didn't know who it was. We did have internet back then, but it wasn't like today. If I heard a song somewhere that I really liked, but didn't know anything about, it's not an exaggeration that I sometimes had to go years before I figured it out.

Your appreciation for music of this era and for those of us who were alive during it is really touching. For some reason, I started listening to music reactors during the pandemic and I didn't really know why I was drawn to it, but I realized after a while that I was witnessing young people learning history through music, not just about the music itself but about the times the music was made in. It has given me some hope, for instance, that a number of reactors have spontaneously, without being told, arrived at the conclusion that the seventies were a more peaceful, gentler time. (And I know that not everything about the seventies was peaceful. Latin America was plagued by fascist torture-dictatorships, for one thing.) One reactor could even tell that through the sound of a Led Zeppelin song. Then, that realization prompts people to go and learn more about that era, but to see people, young people, sensing the spirit of the times and of society through music, without being instructed about it, has just been really amazing.

This was easily the coolest song on the radio when it came out, and when it was on, and I had the power, it was going to get cranked up to 11. And yes. Stop the war. I agree with Amber that your efforts bridge many gaps, and the music, and the example of your being, is making the world a better place. I have come to regard you and some other kindly music reactor sites as a daily source of food and nourishment, and there is always a great song playing in my head.

Here’s an interesting story for you. After a music critic said of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After that they would never be in the top 40 because they didn’t have the talent, Alvin Lee responded by writing this song. Now, here we are 50 years later, still listening to one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Alvin Lee also said in an interview that he writes music that he loves and not Music to be popular

There was a stand-up comedian in the 80s (can't remember who, not a huge name) did a bit about this song. He sang "I'd love to change the world" then "But I don't know what it wears". Not really all that funny, but for some reason it has stuck with me all these decades later, and whenever I hear this song, that bit pops into my head. Lol.
