Casey Boat, Freddie Kraft, TJ Majors, and Brett Griffin are back after NASCAR’s summer break to recap a wild finish at Richmond. Austin Dillon’s decision to dump both Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin elicits some strong reactions from the guys, and a debate ensues on how NASCAR’s win-and-in format enables this type of racing.
Denny and Joey had strong words post-race, along with other Cup Series drivers, and even NASCAR’s Elton Sawyer chimed in. In other news, the “Option” and “Prime” tire options yielded quality racing at Richmond which hopefully gets emulated at future tracks, including this season’s Playoffs. Speaking of Playoffs, we react to Talladega being named as a track in the Round of 8 next season.

They can leave Austin with the win but take away the playoff birth. In 2017 Joey Logano failed post race inspection at Richmond. They let him keep the win but it was encumbered. He lost all play off points and the win did not count for a playoff birth. He didn't make the chase that year. They also took all of Kevin Harvick's playoff points for failing post race inspection at Las Vegas in 2018 too.

"Outside of hitting a baseball, there's no tougher job in sports than being a driver in the NASCAR Cup Series." I've been an avid NASCAR fan for 25 years, and I'm calling BS on that statement by Brett. Yes, there are a lot of variables that drivers have to deal with, some of which are out of their control. But being a Cup driver fails in comparison with being an NFL QB. The QB has to memorize an entire play book, watch hundreds of hours of film with his coaches, build chemistry with his receivers, learn how to read defenses pre-snap, tell his offensive linemen who and how to block on certain plays, call audibles when needed, and generally has a maximum amount of 5 seconds per play to make a decision with the football, whether it involves handing it off to the running back, or throwing it as deep as 60 yards down the field, all the while being in peak physical condition (especially with your throwing mechanics). That doesn't even include variables such as weather, receivers not getting open or catching the football, offensive linemen allowing 300+ pound defensive lineman to break into the pocket, or dealing with nagging injuries. This isn't meant to be a slight against NASCAR drivers either, as they are skilled athletes in their own right. But playing quarterback in the NFL is by far the most difficult job in professional team sports.

These things can't happen. That's why NASCAR is not a sport. Even for the entertainment segment, this was bad. If they think they are on the Entertainment business, good. They will have to find new fans everytime a new generation gets tired of this and realizes that is BS. Well if they do on the first place. How is that even entertaining? Then you don't like racing. Racing was what we had on the first 398 laps. Minus the 2 staged cautions. That is bs too. You have to set a precedent right now. NASCAR changed the rules middle season before, they can do whenever they want. - I agree with Brett, people shouldn't be mad at AD, should be mad at NASCAR they created this. Exactly on point. I mean is not like the drivers head a gun pointed to their head but if you don't do it, the results don't come, sponsors go away, money from playoffs go away and you get fired. So... are you gonna loose your job, your dream of life job because of what people is gonna say on social media? No! Do it and move on. - But i also agree with Freddie: you can't have this. The guy launches himself, because the car is way too strong, wreck the #22, comes down to block, because he has a HUGE rearview camera, misses the timing right rear hook the #11 for the win and nothing happens? - It was bad when NASCAR was created, was bad when Dale Sr. did to Labonte because if you look he came from a very far back too, It was bad when Newman did to Larson, Harvick to Bush, Logano to Kenseth, Edwards to Bush and so many other moments. Yes, NASCAR should have the bump and run, the rubbing is racing but the final laps of Richmond is not acceptable. - #3 should be penalized with 100k, 50k for the spotter, 100k for Childress and loose the win and the playoff spot. Nothing against none of the individuals too just to set a precedent right now - #22 should be penalized with 100k and loose his playoff eligibility. Coming with a wrecked car on a pit road full of families and officials park in front of #3 family, crew do a high rev/burnout it's really bad. Actually is worse. - NASCAR should remove the playoff, stages, finish under yellow, like we used to until 2004. And completely redo the pit road safety. - Otherwise, just quit calling NASCAR and called "Death Race". That would be entertaining for a lot more people and you can make a lot more money. Isn't that the goal after all?

I’m not of a fan of the 11 or 22. Ricky Rudd was black flagged for spinning the 28 very similar to the 3&22. Several drivers have been suspended for Right rear hooking people. I say let the win stand but not towards the playoffs. He’s 32nd in the points he’s not gonna go past first rd anyhow. Nascar has to make this hurt period. I’m an RCR fan and think Dillon deserves harsh punishment, but money fine and take the automatic playoff berth away.

What AD did should be the tipping point for NASCAR and the points system. Win and in has to go. Go to top 16 in points for playoffs wins only counts for playoff points. In this scenario AD keeps the win but isn’t playoff eligible.

They should take the win, take trophy, take money and he should be dropped to last of lead lap for the race. plus win and your in should go away. Make the points count.

That SMT data make it quite clear. "Wreck Him" and Dillon turns the wheel to the left and mashes the gas.

God I’ve never got so much enjoyment in watching Freddy eatting sour grapes. His love obsession Denny got got and his driver Is crying because he wants to be gifted a playoff spot. Earn it Bubba go out drive someone for the first time ever.

Officials need to officiate, just like Denny said. I say go back to the previous lap if a yellow comes out. No more timing loops or visual. If you cause a caution with your last lap desperation move, you don't get the win anyways.

One of nascar’s biggest problem is having all or nothing penalties. There need to be 5 second grid penalties. Not win or DQ

Here the thing about the Hamlin hit. It’s a second after the Logano run, and I think Dillon was catching his car, at the instance 11 came across his nose… Not looking at data, in realtime, it didn’t totally look intentional…

This is equivalent to the Spingate remember the Itchy elbow or sprained elbow. Where it interferes with the playoff qualifying as well. And they added Gordon in as a conditional bonus cus there was international manipulation. NASCAR has to do something similar.

I think AD was trying to door whoever he thought was next to him. He didn't realize how much faster Denny was coming and right reared him. Doesn't make it right, but it wasn't a total right rear like Bubba or Chase.

Brett is right. Unless Nascar wants to establish F1 style realtime review by race stewards for every questionable bump and spin then this will happen from time to time. Nobody wants that -So no penalty.

You can argue all you want about the end of the race but you can not argue about the extremely dangerous childish crap that Lagano pulled on pit road. $50,000 fine is laughable for putting people in danger.

I did not like the move because it is not racing but if you are going to do it he could not have done it to two better people. I see no difference between this and the nonsense at Bowman Gray. However, it is difficult to hear Denny who wrecks people often say this was over the line.

It won’t work TJ, going with the softer tire. Here’s what will happen. Car will drive to the front, use up tires and then aero block the car behind, then car behind wears out tires trying to pass and never makes the pass. Same old racing. You’re thinking softer tire with the OLD car. Not softer tire with the NEW car. Because the NextGen car is aero sensitive in both downforce and side force, it makes passing more difficult. Making a softer tire will help, but not as much as you would think. I think the tire option is the way to go. I think more options teams have, the more strategy, etc. But at the end of the day, it’s always going to come back to driver talent and crew chiefs looking for that edge. Always. I like NASCAR giving the teams more options because they’ve taken away so much grey area and “innovation”.

Denny moved up the track and AD was coming down because Denny gunned it in case the yellow came out. Watch it in slow motion. It makes more sense. This is MJ and Denny playing their hands as owner/driver. It’s double standard bullshit like always.
