@aregeebee201 Special for me too, as I got to see them in January 1988 at the start of the Momentary Lapse Tour, and this was obviously going to be played. It's worth remembering that this was their first single from post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd, and it was the most radio friendly song at the time.

I was seeing this concert in Sweden back then and it was wow. It was not only the massive amount of lights and lasers and projectors that they had in their disposal but their programming was genius. For example the basic arc of lights that that forms a semi circle of lights in the back of the stage. Every song they had different patterns that fit the music perfectly. And then the lasers. In that concert they switched them on first time and at the song "sorrow". I never seen anything like that. Massive green beams scanning over the audiense and reaching the actual clouds (it was out a door stadium concert). I remember there was an interview from the light programmer and he said that some of the lights he requested arrived too late and he already programmed the other lights, and there was a simply no room for these new lights anymore. I was thinking that you can always have a more, but he was right. They had enough :)

Except for John Carin (second pianist). He doesn't really have a solo moment, but when you listen to this concert as a whole, he's so vital to the production with his harmonies and musicality. Everyone is in a league of their own, so it seems.

The 2nd guitarist id the brilliant Tim Renwick. It says a lot for David that he gave him such a spotlight in this second song of the show. The percussion player, Gary Wallis is phenomenal. An amzing musician. He has such an incredible range of percussion instruments to hit all around his cage as well as a conventional kit built in at the front. He also had electronic drums which triggered sound samples which gave him an almost limitless playground to chose from. A natural showman, he put the high ones up so far so he would have the chance to leap p to get them. The the whole show is stunning. This is how it's done!

Also, Stormy White, who was not only on this tour as backup for David, but was the "unofficial fifth member" during the Dark Side thru The Wall era tours. Also, famously recorded the guitar solo between Pigs On The Wing parts. David once said Stormy could easily replace him without anyone noticing, although I'm sure that was an exaggeration!

Just a little bit of interesting information. This tour (which was actually called the 'Division Bell Tour' named after the studio album but referred to as 'Pulse', the name of the live album) was so massive and sophisticated that the group actually had three of these massive setups that leapfroged ahead so that it would be all set up by the time the band got to the next concert venue. Once a performance was finished, the group would start to break down the setup while the band went on ahead to another venue with that stage already set up, so all they had to do was rehearse. Meanwhile, the stage that was broken down would be sent two cities ahead of the band. It was a massive undertaking, but it was very worthwhile.

U2 did the same with the 360 tour, a massive multiple year worldwide tour which had an enormous Claw stage in the middle of the stadium(s). They had about 3 or 4 moving skeleton stages moving around ahead of coming dates to build up and then only the lights, audio, etc had to be hooked up. So a certain amount of people on the crew was never actually in town when U2 played.

The history of this song is really a 'fun' story. Apparently, Gilmour was afraid of flying before he started taking flight lessons. So, Learning to Fly was symbolic of two stages: the fear of getting over it and the actual ability to fly. But David Gilmour can do anything-except get Waters to understand reason. That's Waters' fault.

DG actually bought an ex-Red Arrows Folland Gnat jet trainer aircraft. He then set-up the Intrepid Aviation Company to keep it maintained. Story at the time was that he couldn't actually fly his jet as it was too small for him/he was too big for it. It is a tiny aircraft.

The entire production is designed to reach every single person in the place. The sound quality, the lights, the giant video screens. its not just a concert, its an experience. Absolutely loving your Pink Floyd reactions. Your visceral responses are everything! And as cool as the light show looks on video, when you are there in person, this is taking place in front of you, over you, and behind you. Their use of surround sound is also very creative, where most of the music is coming from the stage, but many of the added sound effects are coming from everywhere. The experience is completely encompassing.

Dave, drummer Nick Mason, and manager Steve O'Rourke were all licensed pilots by this time in their rich ass private lives. So that had some bearing on the lyrics. The lead guitarist on this version is longtime live guitarist Tim Renwick. The jumping percussionist is Gary Wallis and he sets up his kit so he has to jump for some reason.

The difference between Pink Floyd's stage production to other's elaborate stage/light shows is that Pink Floyd uses their production to help tell the story and supply the song's atmosphere unlike any other band since where those are simply distractions from the artist on stage.... David Gilmour is one who is happy to let his band mates shine on stage and you can see it on his face. If you ever see any of his interviews you will see how polite and positive he carries himself and how he speaks with his deep British accent.

Lady, you are such a. hoot! I must admit, I love the intellect of the female mind in general and your mind in particular! You have stumbled across the rock n roll equivalent of the Olympics. Pink Floyd is one of the shining ambassadors of our entire species. If you wanted to show an alien race humanity's greatest exemplars of a musical genre....and it is wonderful watching you fall under the magical sway of this music. It also really shows how large groups of people can experience a shared, collective mood of euphoria and passion. You go lady! I have been a fan of Floyd for over 40 years. That jumping drummer is Gary Wallis, who at that time usually had a big percussion set up that almost felt like he was in a cage. Gilmour saw him play with, I believe, Pete Townsend of The Who and immediately thought that this is the guy I need to add some extra spice on stage and also to provide original drummer Nick Mason with someone who could support his playing. That jumping around was the result of Wallis having this wall of drums which he set up that way.

The stand-up drummer is Garry Wallis. They list him as a percussionist. He was on Pink Floyds last two tours Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse. Nick Mason Pink Floyd's drummer described the moment him and David Gilmour first discovered Wallis. "Neither of us had ever seen anything like it. Instead of sitting down to play Gary was working in a kind of cage stuffed full of percussion, some pieces of which were mounted so high that a three-foot leap was needed to strike the required object."

In the 80's, both Nick and David had a phase where they liked piloting planes and this song is about it. In 1994, one way to promote their tour, they had a Zeppelin which was all painted to Pink Floyd's designs. That 1994 tour was something the world never had seen before. 3 set of stages going around the world. 50 semis per stage, 3 days to build it up and another 3 days tp get it down. They even had their own power generators because the venues did not have enough power for their setup.

Each member of this ensemble(singers and session muso's) is at the peak of their craft, picked for their skills and well renowned throughout the industry as individual artists. Miss Stacy, It is a pleasure to watch you fall in love with Pink Floyd. I like how you appreciate everything you are experiencing. You allow yourself to feel the music. There is nothing like pink Floyd. There will never be another guitarist like David Gilmore. I hope that when we die and go to heaven that the traveling music we get to hear is a solo Dave Gilmore is resonating throughout the universe. You are a breath of fresh air in how you enjoy pink Floyd. I wish I knew you and it would be one of the greatest things to have experienced that concert with you. Especially if you had never knew anything about pink Floyd. I saw that concert and it changed my life. I wasn't a pink Floyd fan at all. I was invited to that show. And I have to tell you I didn't know how to act I was so beyond lost in it. I didn't want that show to end. I couldn't believe what I just saw. Tim Renwick played lead guitar for this song, while David took a back seat instrumentally and played rhythm guitar. The part of the light show for this song that I loved was when the solid white lights came on at the beginning of the second verse and shone across the crowd like the landing lights of a giant plane headed in to land among them. My wife bought me the DVD of this concert for Christmas one year, and the first time I saw that part of the light show while watching it I felt like my heart was standing still for the first half of that verse. Watching Stacy giggle every time the percussionist jumped to hit the cymbals above him made me crack up. 🤣🤣

This song was always amazing, then an inspiration through my flight training, and now as a pilot it still hits me in the feels :)

One thing about it that you’ll never know is the SOUND - quadraphonic sound that you can feel in your bones, yet it didn’t hurt the ears… amazing

You Must review when you can , The Moody Blues epic Nights in White Satin on RU-vid ( Official Live video ) where they play with the London Festival Orchestra .This takes arguably one of the best singles of the 60's, to new heights , and I am predicting will have you in tears for its magnificence and beauty !

I don't travel much, but when someone starts going on about their trip to Europe I tell them I saw Pink Floyd live, just to shut it down. On this song you could FEEL and SMELL the humidity and air changing as they pumped in the smoke for the "above the clouds" affect. Religion.

Someone once mentioned he looked like the guy that just fixed your toilet.I would say his smile is totally authentic. I'm 70 & saw them first in 1970 & went to see them a dozen times in at least 7 different cities. Actually lost a good job because I didn't come back from a festival for a week & to this day not really sure why. New sub, like your style.I also love cats, have 3 & they beat up my 180 lb. rott.

I went to my first concert in the 60's. The Beatles were still in their ascendancy! Thats a lot of performances I've witnessed. Pink Floyd's "Pulse" was the best. It was certainly the most memorable.

Last comment lol. Nick Mason is the original drummer for Floyd. Hes the older gentleman, seated at the traditional drum kit. I forget the other guys name, but he's what yoyd call a percussionist. His job is to add color and flavor and play parts and sounds to compliment what Nick is playing.

Pink Floyd as a band would create things in studio that would need multiple musicians to pull off live. Most bands bring backing musicians with them on tour, they just rarely get the spotlight. David Gilmour wasnt greedy about sharing the stage and brought the session players out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Stacey you quoted Tom Petty learning to fly lyrics not Pink Floyd. David and Nick are nervous flyers so they decided to become pilots. The song is talking about the transcendental experience of flying…”upon planet on a wing and a prayer. My grubby halo a vapor trail in the empty air. Across the clouds I see my shadow fly out of the corner of my watering eyes. ……..there’s no sensation to compare with this, suspended animation a state of bliss…” I saw them in ‘87 and they played for 3.5 hours with an intermission half way.

The one and only concert I have ever been to where being in the nosebleeds in no way detracted from the experience. This was an amazing show. Sometimes I miss the 90s.

"Nourishes my soul" Yeeeess. I love how music has that capability. And Pink Floyd has that essence throughout their entire production. Love love love It's also enjoyable watching some peoples reaction channels, so that those that have enjoyed these songs for so many years can relive the first time experience with a much more profound ear. You do a great job, Stacey 👏 keep at it and enjoy

I just love the fact that you've discovered Pink Floyd......I often say to myself that this music is why our generation was so chill. I get excited every time I see you are going to do another one. I really think you would love the entire Dark side of the Moon album. It's not a "concept" album but there isn't a bad song on it.

The hovering moment in the middle of the song is actually part of recording Nick Masson's (drummer) checklist before his first solo flight as an airplane pilot. On the studio version of the album you can hear it better.

Hi Stacey, during the PULSE tours some musicians were playing with them, the percussionist, this guy jumping as you said is Gary Wallis, a great drummer and percussionist, the drummer from Pink Floyd is Nick Mason, and second guitar player as you can see playing the solo is Tim Renwick, and also a great guitarist.
